I would heavily recommend linking to join-lemmy.org instead of lemmy.ml.
I know, it's better for decentralization to link to the directory. The Black Company tried but they were overrun by Italy. LEMMY.ML
is the "shortest" Lemmy link and we cannot fit anything more unless the canvas expands or the very loose Fuck Spez Coalition lends us more space.
Lemm.ee is pretty short
It's poor branding, at least if someone knows Lemmy and they see a Lemmy link, they will go to it. Lemm.ee doesn't intuitively look like a Lemmy instance to an outsider.
lemmy.ml is even poorer branding, because the majority of newcomers who would attempt to join it will be turned down. At least on lemm.ee they would actually be able to create an account.
lemm.ee?
I'd maybe just say "Lemmy is a better Reddit" in that case.
Person: Searches "Lemmy"
Le Google: Lemmy Kilmister Mötorhead
or *goes to Lemmy.org* (which is what many are still trying to build)
...that domain is for sale for €6666 lol
1234 people have already viewed this offer
sounds legit
If your goal is to advertise the fediverse You should have used 'kbin'.
People can go directly to "lemmy.ml" but the site might disappear due to Mali re-establishing ownership of .ml domains, also its run by a tankie which will upset some people.
"Lemmy" provides 10 google sponsored results and then 'join-lemmy', the join-lemmy website has you 'join a server' and then presents you lots of options.
During the first Mastodon surge one of their issues is people felt overwhelmed by the options and it hurt Mastodon adoption, so a single website does make a lot of sense. Personally I would suggest lemmy.world its a general instance and the admins aren't linked to any extremist views, but you said that would be too long.
If you put 'kbin' into search the top result is kbin.social, that makes it seems like a reddit alternate. It keeps user choice limited and brings them into the fediverse. That means people aren't confronted with the complexity of the fediverse immediately and can learn and understand it at their own pace.
So if your goal is to advertise the fediverse I would push kbin, if your goal is to specifically get people to use a Lemmy based website I don't think you have a good option
The only thing with kbin is the lack of a mobile app. A lot of newer reddit users don’t even know there’s a website. It might be hard to convince those users to switch to kbin if it doesn’t have a mobile app.
Maybe I am old but I don't understand the NEED for a mobile application.
The kbin website works well on desktop and mobile web browsers with no render issues. The lemmy mobile apps all seem to be "alpha" quality.
Why is a buggy app better thana working website?
I choose an application or website based on which one works best. For example I browse Amazon via the web browser on the phone since the mobile application takes 2-5 seconds to load.
Personally I would suggest lemmy.world
Please god no! A majority of the Lemmy population is already on that server. It's presence on SEO and everybody's insistence to use that server is already a problem with trying to push a federated model. The owner's vain goal of trying to maintain the largest Lemmy server isn't helping matters.
We're already in a position where, if lemmy.world went down, the Lemmy federation would be in a crippled state.
Lemmy.world is by far the best experience for a new user. You can convince people to move to a new instance once they're already on lemmy.world. Starting off in a random instance is much more confusing.
Midwest.social is friggin fantastic.
(I would have said "fuckin", but we're "Midwest nice" and don't want to offend people.)
Except for the problem that lemmy.world often runs sluggishly on account of the overload.
But, people won't just move off of their instance for no reason. The general public is too stuck on the idea that Lemmy is one domain and that your account is important to keep.
I wouldn't.
That website is confusing to the average user and makes no sense. Linking directly to an instance, doesn't matter which, gives them a familiar UI to Reddit, and allows them to click "sign up" without issue. From there they can learn about instances and join a different one.
join-lemmy.org is confusing, and makes it seem like it's some software you download to the average user.
It is the wrong instance to link to then, because lemmy.ml has severely limited who are allowed to join it. That would just leave much more confusion and antagonism towards the concept of lemmy than the join lemmy page.
Yeah didn’t Mali re-asserting ownership of the .ml
TLD create a bunch of chaos literally within the last couple days?
You can thank Meta for that. They sued the registrar managing several ccTLDs, including .ml
, .ga
, .gq
, .cf
, and .tk
. Meta even goes so far to fabricate a conspiracy theory about the registrar being part of a cybercriminal ring; they feign concern and wreak havoc.
Noooo not .ml D:
That is awful; lemmy.world would be fine or join-lemmy.org or lemm.ee, but not lemmy.ml
LEMM.EE is actually fewest pixels
and the coolest instance, with the coolest people on it
Of course it links to the domain that's probably about to die in short order. This is why open source can't have nice things.
Spend money on server and bandwidth? Yes.
Spend $9 on a reputable domain name rather than a domain name you technically “rent” from an unscrupulous registrar that eventually takes back domains and redirects them to adult websites? Thus leading to them getting sued by Facebook and bringing enough attention to Mail for them to take back the domains? Nah.
As an Italian I’m sorry, Lemmy is more important than our flag
Based
Isn't lemmy.ml down due to .ml?
There's an ongoing fiasco with the Mali government reclaiming all .ml websites. Fmhy lemmy is already gone as they used a .ml. You may want to link to the org instead, just in case
I know, it's better for decentralization to link to the directory. The Black Company tried but they were overrun by Italy. LEMMY.ML
is the "shortest" Lemmy link and we cannot fit anything more unless the canvas expands or the very loose Fuck Spez Coalition lends us more space.
Might I suggest lemm.ee? It's pretty short and doesn't have any issues with the Mali government.
I came here to suggest that. Already suggested it in the black company discord and the place join lemmy matrix, seems like the idea is picking up on the place join lemmy matrix
Stupid question incoming.. what is this lemmy matrix you speak of?
matrix.to/#/#lemmyplace:data.haus - matrix chat for coordination for lemmy on r/place
Thanks! Never heard of matrix before so will give it a gander!
Use lemm.ee or Lemmy.world.
Lemmy world already has a lot of users
we should now encourage users to use different instances
because that's the point of using a federated platform
LEHHY.HL is the best of them all.
Mr LEHHY is this you talking or the liquor?
*.ml is not a good domain extension 😆

It is also filled with tankies.
whats tankies, precious?
A tankie is a communist or Marxist-Leninist.
I lean socialist, but frankly can’t get onboard with classic communism.
Congrats, you went on reddit and contributed to place just as spez wants.
Was gonna upvote, but it's at 666 and I didn't want to change that.
