Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, The Witcher, The wheel of Time, have all been huge nerd properties. They were each in their own way, fantastic, and each of them destroyed by someone who either didnt understand them, or wanted to turn them into something else.

I fear the very same thing is about to befall one more 90s/00s nerd show. God knows what theyre about to do to Buffy, but I fear for that one as well.

I closed that gate in 2004.

Still waiting for others to see it, and stop falling for it.

The sweeter the juice, the more dangerous the pitcher plant.

Keep the gates closed but acquire the same goods via the port.

I feel like the only really good Bethesda game besides Skyrim that I've played is Dishonored, and coincidentally that's the one developer/studio that Bethesda decided to close down

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Dishonored is from Arkane: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkane_Studios#Games_developed

I'd highly recommend Dishonored 2, Prey, and Deathloop as well. You will love them if you like Dishonored 1.

As for being Bethesda... it's confusing.

There's Bethesda Softworks, which is a giant publisher, a 'brand' with a bunch of studios under them. Including Arkane.

Then there's Bethesda Game Studios, the game dev, owned by Bethesda Softworks. When most gamers say 'Bethesda', they're usually referring to BGS, as they're the ones that make the Elder Scrolls/Fallout games, as well as Starfield.

...And just to add to the confusion, all this was bought by Microsoft.

I'll believe it when it gets released.

Oooo...

What if it's the plot of Universe, but with all the camp and silliness from SG-1? 😮

Was SG-1 camp and silly? I guess some episodes were. It was made back when TV shows were allowed to be fun sometimes.

I'm excited. I'm expecting Universe quality writing. i hope to be pleasantly surprised, but i don't expect it.

still gonna watch it tho. i just bought the damn dvd collection last winter i don't want to buy any more stargate shit for a while

This can vary a lot from Stargate fan to Stargate fan, is Universe quality writing a good thing or a bad thing?

From seeing the people in charge and how they handled the announcement, I'm kind of expecting something in line with SG-1/Atlantis, but looking forward to hearing more about the direction.

It's a bad thing.

Stargate, much of the time, was competency porn. Writers threw that away and did a man-vs-man-survival style story in an enclosed space aboard a runaway starship. The story heavily borrowed cues from LOST and Battlestar Galactica (reboot) instead, relying heavily on characters spontaneously acting blind/deaf/dumb for no reason, seemingly as a plot-device to keep the drama going. The way to survival and broader frontiers was clearly to just work together, but that was just constantly and frustratingly out of reach. When the audience is used to the opposite of all that, it makes for a very miserable watch.

Tbf, I still enjoyed it for what it was, while recognizing it was very different and not as good as it's predecessors. So long as it isn't worse than that, I'm happy for new Stargate content, although I'm holding out hope it will be more like the earlier iterations.

Sorry, best I can do is 20 episodes of Wormhole Extreme!

But it's Bezos! I'm not giving Bezos any more money.

The new Critical Role cartoon series is out as well, and despite being a fan, I ain't watching that because it's on Prime. (I'm also not pirating it btw, I'll keep hoping that it'll eventually get released on BluRay or something)
