You use Arch, btw.

[-] pmk@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 22 minutes ago

As others have said, lemmy.zip might be a better instance for you than .ml.
In general, I'd say people are nicer here, more arguments in good faith, which I like.
Politics range from socialism to anarchism. Any thread on any topic is a good place to discuss Linux. No one cares about how many upvotes people have. You may need to actively explore communities and join them if you want. It's a bit like free software, if you think something is lacking, participate with more content and build up the community. Free software is great, what's your favorite distro?

Sometimes I'll call you a dumbass, but if I do, you were probably being a dumbass.

Do NOT mention Nicole.

Wait, shi-

[-] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 19 points 3 hours ago

Each instance has its own vibe. You joined .ml, just a fair warning that a few instances and a chunk of Lemmy users have defederated/blocked it, so you may miss out on some content. Otherwise, pretty chill for the most part.

[-] silica@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 hour ago

Holy shit! That’s why a lot of my old communities haven’t been subscribed to yet.

From a really sad lemm.ee refugee. I miss that instance.

Any suggestions of chill instances just for tech, games and comics?

[-] darkreader2636@lemmy.zip -2 points 1 hour ago

Aren't we all migrated to .zip?

Hey, do you have a channel or blog on theology? Your username sounds familiar to me.

[-] brain_in_a_box@hexbear.net 4 points 1 hour ago

Which major instances defed .ml?

[-] chillpanzee@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 hour ago

I'm like OP from a few months ago. I joined ML because it was easy and sorta anonymous. What's the story on ML? Who defederated? What am I missing?

[-] leftzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 hour ago

It's the devs' test instance.

The devs are tankies. They're the admins of the instance. Therefore the instance is tankie-ish (but not as much as Lemmygrad).

It's been defederated by instances whose admins (or users, if the instance is democratic enough) don't want to federate constant tankie bullshit.

(Personally I'd also defederate .world, which tries to be so much like reddit that it's like .ml but in the opposite direction, but that would mean defederating a major fraction of lemmy users, I suppose.)

It's the devs' test instance.

The devs are Marxist-Leninists. They're the admins of the instance. Therefore the instance has nuanced-to-positive views on Actually Existing Socialist (AES) states, and allows for criticism of Democrats from the left.

It's been defederated by instances whose admins aren't wiling to critically examine their lifetime of capitalist programming and are accustomed to Reddit's universal condemnation of AES states.

If you use any Microsoft product, keep that to yourself...

[-] Okokimup@lemmy.world 48 points 6 hours ago

Please do not drag the same tired jokes over from reddit (e.g. broken arms). Stick around long enough to learn Lemmy's tired jokes.

[-] vodka@feddit.org 5 points 4 hours ago

The narwhal bacons at midnight.

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 7 points 4 hours ago

I’ll fucking bake your narwhal in a microwave at midnight, son

[-] Broadfern@lemmy.world 19 points 5 hours ago

Beans, how not to poop for 5 days, ed Sheeran, and I use arch btw? I’m sure I missed a bunch, too.

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 12 points 4 hours ago

How not to poop for 5 days was the first fediverse legend I got to personally witness, good times

[-] NotSteve_@piefed.ca 7 points 4 hours ago

Make sure to brush up on your fern reproduction cycle as well

Just don’t say anything right of center and you’ll be gucci.

walter is clearly saying something and is right of center framing, take this down immediately /s

It’s smaller, but more personable. It’s full of neurodivergent, queer, and tech oriented people. It has its own inside jokes—you will want to read up on beans.

Overall, I have enjoyed the experience. Sometimes, I have been surprised when people can’t detect obvious jokes or sarcasm, but then I remember how many people here are neurodivergent and try to reply with something kind and straightforward so we’re on the same page.

People tend to be very leftist compared to the rest of the internet, so it’s good to remember that the opinions here are not always representative of the world at large.

A huge chunk of Lemmy is German, and that part of the community remains a total mystery to me because I don’t speak German. They seem cool from afar.

Which communities you are able to see depends pretty heavily on which instance is your home base—I’m with DB0, and we federate with pretty much everyone who isn’t doing something detestably illegal, but LemmyWorld is much more exclusive with who they federate with, so their users don’t see the same instances that I do. Pick a home instance that fits you best because it will matter a lot as you find communities.

You will see interactions between communists and anarchists. Try to remember that you don’t have to comment on everything you might disagree with.

Welcome to the Fediverse—we’re happy to have you.

[-] sexywheat@hexbear.net 10 points 4 hours ago

Just know that Hexbear has the best users and anyone who says otherwise is not to be trusted.

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 6 points 4 hours ago

I actually like the hexbears for the most part

It’s the snowflake libertarians who get all bent out of shape when they get called out by a plurality of leftists after chirping about their supposed freedom and they start crying on the timeline about how illegal that should be that gets me

[-] leftzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 1 hour ago

They're not libertarians. They're tankies cosplaying as libertarians.

[-] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 4 points 50 minutes ago* (last edited 49 minutes ago)

He didn't call Hexbears, libertarians, comrade; he said he prefers them over libertarians.

Hexbears have disdain for libertarians^[Libertarian can have broad definitions, but in this context I'm referring to right-libertarians, aka anarcho-capitalists, which is the dominant type of self-identified libertarian on the Anglosphere internet], so we certainly don't pretend to be them.

[-] grillgamesh@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 hours ago

the hilarity of the cooking and mealprep community doing "content warnings" for literal food is always a good source of laughter.

[-] RagnarokOnline@programming.dev 18 points 6 hours ago

I hope you like beans

[-] 200ok@lemmy.world 16 points 5 hours ago

Niche communities are small/sparse, so commenting and posting there will be especially appreciated.

[-] Infernal_pizza@lemmy.dbzer0.com 74 points 8 hours ago

If you haven't already then you need to switch to Linux

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 10 points 4 hours ago

this, but unironically.
