If you swallow too much at once it overextends the esophagus. This causes it to spasm. That is why it hurts sometimes.

Both. That’s why it’s too much.

My favourite little bird, the lowly barn swallow. Incredibly social, they gather on the power lines and twitter at each other when a storm is coming. Lightning fast, and voracious mosquito eaters, and they keep their nests incredibly clean, carrying out their droppings from the building.

I love barn swallows.

I already learned this from your dad

[-] its_kim_love@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago

Are you saying you throat goated my dad?

It’s a bolus – a ball-shaped mass of liquid – moving down the throat via peristalsis. The muscles just happened to have formed the liquid into a sphere, liquids cannot be compressed, so the peristaltic muscles are trying to squeeze something that can’t be squeezed. The muscles don’t know that, squeeze anyway, and that pain is the result.

well then someone should fix it since we clearly know the cause and it's reproducible. we filed this issue like 300,000 years ago and it's still open, and I've seen it on other MAMMALX platforms like cat and dog

[-] X@piefed.world 20 points 1 week ago

thank you for volunteering to fix this issue!

So much for intelligent design eh?

[-] Klear@quokk.au 12 points 1 week ago

Theodicy is the the teological conundrum of how to square God's omnipotence (can do anything) and omnibenevolence (absolute good) with the existence of evil in the world. A shitton of teologicians and philosophers tried to tackle the problem and usually failed miserably. Personally I never found any explanation to be convincing, until I came up with one and I honestly believe it is the only possible one.

What if God just... isn't very clever? He's doing his best, ok?!

Now, you may ask - if he's omnipotent, couldn't he increase his own intelligence? Yes he could. But he's too stupid to realise that =(

I had a philosophy professor who espoused this view, and I tend to agree.

It's in the next release.

Unfortunately there is no path forward without full uninstall, reinstall.

I've always had it with soda, and I thought I had swallowed in such a way that the CO2 was all trying to fizz out at once. Feels like you've stubbed your esophagus.

[-] BleatingZombie@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Out of curiosity, do you lack the ability to burp?

I used to get that issue with soda and I also used to not be able to burp

There's actually a real treatment for it now

On the off chance you can't burp, try looking (or try having your doctor look) into "dysfunction of the belch reflex"

I can burp. But not during a swallow. Esophagus is half-duplex.

Same feeling I get when I swallow an irregular shaped piece of food or one of those elongated multivitamin pills and the object decides to go down SIDEWAYS. You can feel it getting lodged at the back of your throat and then you feel it slowly painfully sliding down your esophagus as you start imagining who will be attending your funeral and what they will be saying for your eulogy.

I always picture a swashbuckling pirate jumping down my throat, using his knife to slow down his decent like in the cartoons when they did it to the sails on the ship. ☠️

I call it swallowing a square because that's what it feels like to me.

[-] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 week ago

Me too from this moment on. You've described it perfectly.

Usually happens when you are in a rush or are not paying attention. I have that happen to me when I'm rushing out the door and decide to drink a bit of water or a coffee but want to hurry up. Then you lose any amount of time you were trying to save by standing there imagining what they will be writing on your tombstone.

This has happened a few times in my life. Feels kinda like when you use a muscle wrong and it starts cramping, just that in this case I somehow swallowed wrong. At least it doesn't last for very long. Once my leg started cramping while I was half-asleep. Fuck that hurt for what felt like 5 minutes.

[-] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago

Shit. My first cramp was when I was lying in bed half asleep. My left calf started cramping, but I had no clue what was going on. I was too scared/in pain to attempt to touch it. I just stated in pain for probably 5 minutes but it felt longer. That shit sucked.

Now I can recognize it when it first starts and massage the fuck outta it before it gets really bad.

For me there are times where I ”drink too hard”, and it leaves some nasty chest pain. Rare, but I hate when it happens.

[-] nimpnin@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 week ago

Maybe? Or drinking cold water after not eating anything for a long time?

[-] Evil_Incarnate@sopuli.xyz 22 points 1 week ago

No. It's this weird thing that sometimes if you swallow badly it really fucking hurts. Water goes to your stomach, there's no coughing or anything. It just hurts like you swallowed your tonsils or something.

[-] nimpnin@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 week ago

Good luck with that

No, it's more like swallowing an air bubble that's too big.

[-] Maestro@fedia.io 6 points 1 week ago

I have that sometimes! Any idea what it is?
