In the monthly server updates for lemmy.zip/piefed.zip there's a mantra that's repeated every month. I think it's wonderful and can be applied to the Fediverse as a whole.

If you’re new here - WELCOME! I hope you’re enjoying your time here :)

Just one small teeny-tiny request. The greatest gift you can give the Fediverse (Original: Lemmy.zip and Piefed.zip) isn’t money, praise, or interpretive dance (although we would absolutely accept the last one). Its participation.

Upvote the things you like. Start a discussion, debate, or ponder about whether water is wet or merely makes things wet. Make new communities if you don’t see one that fits your oddly specific niche obsession.
(We don’t judge. Well, we try not to judge anyway.)

The fediverse naturally ebbs and flows, tides of people come and go. But if you’ve found yourself oddly attached to this strange little corner of the internet? Wonderful. Help it breathe. Help it grow. Help it be just a tiny bit weirder in the best possible way.

So if you’ve gone to the effort of clicking Sign Up and proving you’re not a robot (unless you are, in which case hello and welcome to our new AI overlords), then please, I beg of you:

Stick around. Add your voice. It really does make this place better.

A'ight you won, gotta say something for today. But i hardly understand how people do manage to be social enough to post almost every day, like, they manage to make everything interesting.

It usually takes me 30-40 minutes to find the strengh to post something. How others will react to it, or is it even meaningful to post it, I find myself facing theses questions as much irl as online.

Anyways, it truly is a very nice place here, I agree with you, thanks to thoses amazing posters who never get out of inspiration. Thank you all.

Just remember everybody is anonymous and the votes don't really matter!

Also I can guarantee you that no one else will scrutinize what you say as much as you do. Mostly they will not even remember!

[-] VinnyDaCat@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

I upvote a lot, but I don't always comment as much as I should. I often find that I may or may not have anything particularly new to add to the comments.

[-] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Don't worry about it, in places like Instagram and YouTube - even twitter and R*ddit - people are leaving comments like "bro said [thing previous commenter said]"

And that's fine! Let's be social and authentic and just happy that there aren't bots pretending to be people here

[-] mirshafie@europe.pub 3 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah honestly there's no point adding meaningless chatter either. I like the comment sections here because it feels like people have let their words settle in their minds before they started mashing the keyboard.

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I like peas and mashed potatos.

I think I'm still a little concerned about account security especially in these scary US fascist times. Trying to take the safest course of action but I am still burnt over by reddit and its hard to wipe your accounts there too now...

There's like 5 people that are firehoses of content that are keeping lemmy alive.

[-] eta@feddit.org 5 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah they're doing a huge service to the Fediverse. I've had a few times where I saw posts from the same people across totally different communities to the point where I'm wondering if they're actually interested in all these subjects or just posting for the sake of it.

[-] Scrollone@feddit.it 5 points 3 weeks ago

After a while, it doesn't even matter. It creates a sense of community, making this place nice for new people to join. So it's good.

[-] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I see a lot of the same people, recognize the names. I argue with some, know I'll agree with others. I like it. It harkens back to old forum days for me. Reddit may as well be anonymous1 talking to anonymous2, maybe outside of some more niche subs, but here, I can comment on a post about corn and recognize a few of the names who are also commenting.

I make it a point to post a few articles every day.

Not a firehose, but I'm doing my part.

[-] Gorgritch_umie_killa@aussie.zone 3 points 3 weeks ago

I'm not a big fan of those absolute firehoses though. It would be impossible to read as much as they post, and therefore they can't have much invested or interest in the subjects which is bad for discussion and reminds me of the reasons for disliking AI slop.

Nice post, and thanks. I usually only comment and vote but have not created posts yet. That is my goal for 2026, to post at least one thing. I'm scared of the potential hateful insults I would get for posting something but I can be a dick sometimes, so I get it.

[-] Foni@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago

If you commit to making a post, I commit to being nice to you and not being a jerk.I try not to be like that in general and appreciate people's willingness to contribute.

[-] Demdaru@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I fear only one thing. That I will be too bland/boring or what I deem in any way interesting won't be. Or that it will be and I'd get overwhelmed with amount of comments and wouldn't be able to reply to even third of them and would come off as a dick or a bot :< That and I am well aware I am not compatible with most of lemmy so yeah.

[-] anon6789@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

This is the main resistance I see. I thought I'd be boring in the beginning. I didn't know much about the subject I began to post about. But from continuing to interact, I learned more about the subject, and I learned what the people I was talking to liked more or liked less.

If you're just being yourself and talking about things you're interested in, you're gonna be fine. People here are pretty chill, so if you're not spouting outright lies or antagonizing people, there isn't anything to worry about.

[-] assa123@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I never posted nor commented in reddit, here I try to overcome the social anxiety

[-] pebbles@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

I've found that near every post I've made only has nice comments. Unless it is political lol, but thats par for the course. I believe in you!

Yeah, unless you’re making a discussion about human rights, or you have the most brain-dead opinion to ever disgrace this earth, people are pretty damn nice here

I'm still just figuring out how fediverse / lemmy work, but I do get bored sometimes because of the lack of content, so I guess I'm part of the problem. I'll try to be more involved.

I've been trying to think of a good (for the lack of knowing the correct verbiage) 'subreddit' to start, but they all seem too specific for the amount of users on Lemmy. Also I wouldn't know how to start one. Comment down below any tips. Thanks!

I started posting by picking the communuty for the place i live and trying to post local and independent media and special interest groups articles about/in the context of that place.

Its benefits are,

  • It creates activity on the fediverse that is unique, and the more interesting for it.
  • You'll be promoting the voices of those less often heard.
  • You can also help local and independent media with readers and exposure. Its seen as more of an offline problem of media concentration, but i think theres online solutions for the surviving publications.

If you look through my history you'll see my posts to c/Perth/WesternAustralia there are ebbs and flows in interest but the key point is when something happens, say a protest, or a pub banning some nazis the community is there ready for the users, active and established.

If you go to the sidebar of that community, and all the communities i moderate i have gathered in each a host of resources for people to refer to for articles and information in regards each of those communities. It also helps me to have easy access to those publishers as i look for something i find interesting.

So i don't know what city or State you live in, but if theres a place based server, or a generalist server that hosts a community for it, i'd start posting there. If it looks abandoned maybe jump onto that servers c/meta and request to become the moderator. That'll give you the ability to change things like the sidebar and participate in managing misbehaviour if/when users post things off topic/against the rules for the community.

See you in fediverse ;)

Edit: oh, also posting is a piece of active fun, instead of waiting passivley for something to entertain you. So its fun in a different way to scrolling feeds, or commenting.

[-] eta@feddit.org 4 points 3 weeks ago

The amount of upvotes you get on your posts says something different

[-] Spaniard@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

It's the internet, if you have something worth saying say it, someone will find it useful in the future.

OK I guess this is my time to say hi!

So, hi!

I created a community for my erotic fiction on the lemmynsfw site. This is the link: https://lemmynsfw.com/c/DominatingChloe

I would love to hear your thoughts if you are into such things.

[-] Tangent5280@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Bruh, who starts a conversation like that? I just sat down, Sarah.

[-] defn@feddit.uk 2 points 3 weeks ago

One valuable way to grow Lemmy: pick a feed that interests you, even if it's got almost no traffic, and just start posting on it.

Whether you source your posts from equivalent subreddits, or other social media, or from relevant articles you come across in the news, you can - through 10-15 minutes per day of direct action - quickly create a valuable feed for others.

Much like how the best way to grow an in-person gathering is to commit to just keep showing up for a while, even if it's only you. It works in the fediverse too.
