Isn't this meme the wrong way round?

Joseph Gordon Levitt's character is the charlatan in the film

[-] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 8 points 1 month ago

Can't be. Man good, woman bad.

[-] blinfabian@feddit.nl 3 points 1 month ago

idk the characters nor the movie. i just used a common template :3

[-] cabbage@piefed.social 5 points 1 month ago

I'm probably just not cultivated enough in the refined world of internet memes, but this comes across as "girls are noobs hurr durr"

[-] blinfabian@feddit.nl 5 points 1 month ago

idk, its just a meme template to me...

[-] Dagnet@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

You did nothing wrong, people are just trying hard to find sexism where there is none. That template has always been 2 people thinking they have the same opinion but actually being very different. Could reverse those two and suddenly there would be no issues for them

[-] Zachariah@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago

seems to support their criticism

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It's just a meme template, nothing deep. It's a template used to say "we are similiar yet not the same" or "we look the same but we are the opposite" or things like that

I'd argue that if your first thought was that, after looking at the template then...yeah something is clearly wrong with you

[-] mushroommunk@lemmy.today -1 points 1 month ago

Except society often already relegates the opinion of women as wrong by default. The template leans into that. I'd argue that them questioning the meme template is a good thing because they're aware of biases pushed by society.

Just because it's a meme template doesn't mean it's not deep

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it -1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I do not know where you live but i love in a country that is mostly conservative, if we don't count countries as iran and such (were the problem is indeed present) it's not a problem, i never heard many people assuming that women are wrong because of their sex or gender. Maybe yeah, i heard some old grumpy grandpa but they will die soon anyway.

The meme template is not that deep, only choosen because it was the perfect scene for a meme, the fact that there is a man and a women is because most people are hetero, since memes are more a thing about many people it's just normal that it happens

Edit: grammar

[-] wholookshere@piefed.blahaj.zone 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

why not swap who is 'wrong' in this meme?

why use the woman every time?

that's the thing with art. it leeks your self onto it. memes included..

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I would've done it based on the direction or based on who i am honestly.

Probably a man choose the man as the one that uses librewolf instead of the woman Identification based on the identification they feel in the meme.

IN MY case i would've choosen always the left person to be in the right, whatever it was man or women cuz of the irony of the right being in the left and the fact i read from right to left in any language i know

[-] wholookshere@piefed.blahaj.zone 0 points 1 month ago

but that's the point isn't it?

even a meme is deeper than it looks of you did it based on who you are.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 0 points 1 month ago

Yeah it is, but you all make it extreme and make it look like that if you decide to use the man for the right thing then you are bad

[-] wholookshere@piefed.blahaj.zone -1 points 1 month ago

if you dislike what it says about you, that's for you to process and deal with.

I've done nothing but point out what it's saying to me, and just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's not being said.

real talk here....

its okay to be uncomfortable with what something says about you.

but you CAN controll what you unconsciously say. By starting to recognize these biases and start to examine the root, and decide if you want to change how you do that in the future.

I'm not even saying you have to, or even you should change. Just that if you WANT to change, you can.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Yeah...no that's not the problem here, i even identify partially as women and many friends of mine are women, i am not uncomfortable or anything. Please stop accusing

It's like if a hebrew said "Hitler is so right" during his reign

Edit: i added what i said in later replies

[-] wholookshere@piefed.blahaj.zone 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

well we're not making things extreme so.....

as a trans person myself, I said nothing of your gender, and only spoke of your biases. just because your a woman, doesn't mean you don't have biases.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 0 points 1 month ago

I would have biases on women when it harm me too? It's like if a hebrew said "yeah Hitler is totally right" during Hitler's reign

[-] vahalasly@feddit.uk 0 points 1 month ago

There are plenty of women who have biases against women lol

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 1 points 1 month ago

I am sorry for them tbh 💔

[-] wholookshere@piefed.blahaj.zone 0 points 1 month ago

really, so being a women means your a perfect soul?

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

No, i mean that i don't want to shoot myself in the foot

[-] mushroommunk@lemmy.today -1 points 1 month ago

I live in the US with many good friends in UK and a few in South America who I discuss gender and unconscious bias with. Countless studies disagree with you including a broad UN study conducted in 2023. Women are still consistently discriminated against and the default unconscious bias is that women are inferior. Yes it's better (in some countries ignoring Iran and such) but it's still a significant problem. Your opinion here tells me you don't here about notice it because you choose not to. Go read the data.

The fact this meme spread without any consideration for the unconscious bias it plays into is exactly the point.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Then send me the study, thank you

[-] mushroommunk@lemmy.today -1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Fuck off. You couldn't literally spend ten seconds searching?

They even give a nice little graphic summary at the bottom. 90% of people still hold some form of bias against women. https://news.un.org/en/story/2023/06/1137532

And this is a single study. Just one.

Spend ten seconds more and you'll find studies on the bias entrenched in everything. Medicine, politics, social norms, etc. Many places didn't include women in medical studies until 1993. We have doctors today all over the place who went through med school reading data and studies that didn't include women.

Fuck even the temperature we set thermostats in offices is biased against women as it's based off old studies done on the average American male wearing a suit (ASHRAE 55 was the formula used if you want to look into it, though for this one many bodies such as OSHA and CCOH [Canadian OSHA basically] now recommend better temperatures, offices have lagged adjusting to them). All my female co-workers have brought thermo bottles for years to warm themselves up.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 0 points 1 month ago

Fuck off. You couldn't literally spend ten seconds searching?

Calm down, jeez;
I am not going to continue a conversation with someone like you.

[-] mushroommunk@lemmy.today -1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

And there's the handwaving "I'm the mature one" always used to shut things down instead of even remotely interacting with the actual message. Classic Internet.

[-] mushroommunk@lemmy.today -2 points 1 month ago

That's because it does. The template pretty much always pushes the man is right the woman is wrong which plays into several biases pushes by society.

Lock yourself in a cave with no access to the internet for the ultimate privacy.

[-] blinfabian@feddit.nl 1 points 1 month ago

thanks for the 1st comment on here thats not just complaining about the meme template :D

[-] Asafum@feddit.nl 0 points 1 month ago

What's wrong with nord? Is it specifically bad or just not as good as other options?

[-] TheRealKuni@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Even privacy advocates tend to rate Nord relatively highly. Maybe it’s just, like, the Yankees of VPN services and they advertise hard, so people knee-jerk hate them? (But I don’t know, someone can correct me if I’m wrong.)

I’m disappointed in them dropping Meshnet, that was an awesome free perk.

[-] hellfire103@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

It's proprietary, and therefore most of us don't trust it.

[-] MotoAsh@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It's bad because it's bloated trash whos main purpose is to upsell their other services.

It doesn't even work right after you hop a few servers.

[-] yardratianSoma@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 month ago

would have been better to use the breaking bad "Jesse Pinkman and Jane" template, no?

[-] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de -1 points 1 month ago

Male = tech

Female = dumb uninformed prude

Right?

[-] Vespair@lemmy.zip -1 points 1 month ago

So wait, not only did you add your additional privacy picks, you also added non-sequiturs for the topic like ChatGPT to the female character to make her appear not just under-informed but outright ignorant? Okay I guess

[-] ObtuseDoorFrame@lemmy.zip -2 points 1 month ago

....Lemmy is so embarrassing at times. Did you know that Lemmy has a reputation for being bad for women? This meme is blatantly sexist. And here's day two.

[-] halvar@lemy.lol 0 points 1 month ago

Yes it probably would have been luckier to do it the other way around, even though I think the focus is on people buying into privacy without actually learning about it VS people who do. I don't think OP chose this setup because they are sexist.

[-] ObtuseDoorFrame@lemmy.zip -1 points 1 month ago

Yes, posting this doesn't necessarily make OP sexist, that's true. Just clueless and a proud member of the boys club that is Lemmy. Like I said, it's embarrassing.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Is this supposed to be a novelty account? Is that why you're being obtuse? Or is it merely coincidental?

[-] ObtuseDoorFrame@lemmy.zip -1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I am not obtuse, in my opinion. My personality is consistently perceived as obtuse, hence the name. The label has been consistently applied to me my entire life, so I co-opted the word for myself.

People call me "white knight" and "social justice warrior" and whatever a lot, too. But I like the word obtuse better. This obtuse side of men only emerges when something bothers me, usually of a societal nature.

I'm right about this meme and if I was better at expressing myself I wouldn't get so many downvotes. Being downvoted for being right isn't actually a hobby of mine, but sometimes it sure feels like it is.
