The people who hid Anne Frank and her family were guilty of obstruction, too.
Yup. The holocaust was legal. Slavery was legal. Hiding Jews (to help them escape the holocaust) was illegal. The Underground Railroad (to help slaves escape the south) was illegal. Legality often aligns with morality, but legality cannot be used as a basis for morality. Because throughout history, people have used laws to justify heinously immoral acts.
Legality often aligns with morality

I'd say it "sometimes" does.
For the major crimes, yes.
Murder, theft, etc.
But for other crimes, like the one in the article, it's moral to resist.
The vast majority of laws cover petty things that may or may not be moral rather than the big stuff, though.
"I took six parking spots, three handicapped, as a moral and political position and statement. As such my actions are protected political speech and unless you are duly sworn in by the coast guard you can't do shit you see that gold fringe on my license placard? I answer only to the Admiralty Board. Now agents of corporate have put three boots on and a glued this mermaid titty clamp onto the front of my primary turbine familiar domicile conveyance and I mailed them a quit and go away deed. They ain't quit and go away. What words I need put on my quit and go away deed?"
The real question is: Who gets to define the morality that the law should align with?
The real answer is: the fey queen Titania and her sylvan council of woodland beings, duh.
Oh God you can't imagine the shit that I get into the minute somebody mentions morality and I asked them whose morality are you talking about. I live in a very highly religious area and the looks people give me is hilarious. Seriously fuck their thought of what morality is or isn't.
I do. And you do. That's the neat thing. Best societies are ones where each person's voice carries the same weight in deciding that shit, but that's an ideal and those don't exist (the assumptions that would have to exist for that to happen just aren't currently happening. Or likely possible). But like, it happens via conversation about morality and law and where they align
It's subjective. But the state of the world today lends a lot of credence to being cynical.
When were talking about simple ass shit that we probably barely need a legal system to deal with, sure.
Don't kill, don't steal, don't rape, these are rules that every man of any creed can live by (sorry, had to)
But as soon as the law gets more complicated than "don't visit violence on others unprovoked" it just becomes the state threating you to do what it wants
So she gets convicted of obstruction, but Trump steals and hides classified documents and is basically apologized to for the inconvenience of getting charged?
Not just apologized to but he also just sued the government for a $230 million payout for being investigated over illegally keeping the documents and its up to the president and head of the DOJ whether to pay it 🙄
The Mueller report recommended 10 charges of obstruction of justice, but Bill Barr lied, and said it totally exonerated him.
The USA is a facist country now. laws are only for the poor and the opposition. Try to keep up.
America hasn't been a nation of laws in a long time, if ever.
In an unjust society the only place for a just man is prison.
-- Henry David Thoreau

Matter of time INS becomes Deportation and Denaturalization Services.
When reason is restored, every member of this jury will be found and held accountable for enabling this fascist abortion of Constitution, law, ethics, and morality. No treason will be forgotten or forgiven. Not one act.
The state can remain irrational much longer than you can remain free
Appeal and get a new judge. I wouldn't trust any of this.
Getting into good trouble. The mark of a great human.
No amount of therapy can fix the reality of the country like this
Lol during my therapy sessions I talk abt how I'm personally doing better but the state of the world is magnitudes worse in every respect. Also my healthcare premiums are skyrocketing and I either pay it or get screwed and walk away from my therapist cause I can't afford out of pocket sessions.
I swear if the Democrats do not pardon her, they will lose any banking left as people are helping in what they have been saying. We need to let them know that it's on the list of people that need to be given a damn pardon.
Fuck maga, fuck trump, fuck these fascist traitors.
Attacking an independent judiciary is a clear, unequivocal sign of unbridled fascism.
“Jury of your peers”
More than half our peers are fascists and their sympathizers
This is why I am becoming kinda...okay? With a civil war, now. I don't want my neighbors nor government to consist of Nazis.
War sucks. But living the rest of my life with awful people would be even worse.
Hey, non-voters and protest voters, y'all fall under that "sympathizers" bucket. Have the day you voted for! ✨
Weird how all the “protest voters” I know, seem to have no problem with anything currently happening. In fact, any time I bring up politics, I’m reminded of how the real fascism was having to wear masks.
Non-voter: “but 1 didn’t vOtE!”
Everyone else: “Yeah you did. You’re just too stupid to understand what you voted for. Or make any effort to.”
A "fascist sympathizer" is just a fascist.
The other half are useful idiots.
Another martyr for democracy. She will be remembered as a hero someday soon, like Rosa Parks.
Someone set up a Go Fund Me account for the nice lady.
This was corrupt AF for Judge Cervera to state this especially since they were not even party to that claim. This judge was only present for requesting the moronic agents to review policy with the Chief Judge. Other factors abused by DOJ was to blame but that shameful Judge Cervera just wrecked our state courts across the nation handing them over to the authoritarian federal police.
“Judges shouldn’t be helping defendants evade arrest,” Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Kristela Cervera told a jury.
Judges should (and up until now do) have wide discretion over how to run their courts.
Also, this nonsense is going to have a chilling effect on people being willing to legitimately go to court.
