I don’t really have much to add but feel compelled to say that I really enjoy this type of comedy. Maybe there is already a name for it but I think of it as observational absurdism, or Incorrect Shower Thoughts.

I rarely laugh out loud at it, but it makes me smile extra big to consider it.

I love the idea of someone making a remark based on an absurdly incorrect observation or premise, and as a bonus, this type of comedy rarely has a “target”: it isn’t punch down or up. It’s punching itself if anything.

Anyway, just saying.

It's cute to me because it's similar to child logic.

look at all those chickens

Dad jokes? I'm no humourologist, but if this isn't dad jokes, they are probably related to each other somehow.

[-] deacon@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

There is a certain wink at the camera implied in most dad jokes (at least in this dad’s) that I think is replaced with seeming earnestness in this example and in the vein that I’m thinking, but maybe I’m quibbling because I don’t want to have just “reinvented” dad jokes in my comment.

I recommend old episodes of Burns and Allen. Gracie Allen was a master at this kind of humor

In every bit of comedy, there's almost always something who is the foil of the joke. And in these kinds of jokes, it's the original poster being confidently incorrect.

That's how I see it anyway.

I'm more impressed that they built the visitor center there, knowing that people would want to come and see the meteor when it landed

Literally took me a while to realise it's the same image

[-] slappyfuck@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 weeks ago

The joke is that the font is called impact.

[-] tetris11@feddit.uk 5 points 3 weeks ago

I got that, I'm saying the visual connotations I have of each font literally warped my perception of each crater.

[-] Cromer4ever@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

That's the best joke I've ever heard

[-] Hellstormy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 3 weeks ago

Also why is it that meteors always seem to land in craters? Someone really should look into that...

[-] luciferofastora@feddit.org 2 points 3 weeks ago

Actually, they don't always. The Diplomatic Office for Non-Terrans has a procedure for the Meteor Impact Site Selection. Their Agency for Impact Mitigation picks a suitable place, and sends a team to prepare an "Excavated Area for Controlled Touchdown per the Treaty for Arrival and Reception of Guests and Envoys on Terra". The meteors then adjust their their Host Impact Trajectory to make sure they land on the ExACT TARGET.

Occasionally, of course, things don't go to plan. In such cases, the meteors' Orders for Host Conflict Resolution and Avoidance Procedures dictate that they perform a Fatality Unavoidability Check. If the FUCk comes up positive, they're supposed to follow the quite morbidly named "Instructions to Limit Liability for Diplomatic Incidents and Emergencies".

Not every meteor has the nerves for that, unfortunately, so some of them do hit places they're not supposed to, with disastrous consequences, but for the most part, DONT MISS works well enough.

It’s magnetic attraction!

[-] X@piefed.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

[-] otp@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago

Astronomers are excellent at math, afterall!

[-] Agent641@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Meteorite crater was an inside job

[-] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 7 points 3 weeks ago

Direct hit on whatever it was the Visitor Centre for, though.

I have a friend who needs to get a flight back home from there in a few days or they will die. Can anyone give them a ride?

[-] squirrel@piefed.kobel.fyi 2 points 3 weeks ago

Is your friend allowed to poop for the next 3 days?

[-] Chef_Boyargee@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

We always joked about how wild it was that the meteor just barely missed the highway out there

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago

Are you certain it wasn't hit and now it's just smaller?

It's really close to the petrified forest and painted desert which are some of the coolest stuff I've seen. And it's an easy stop on a trip from Albuquerque to the grand canyon

[-] DylanMc6@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 weeks ago

The visitor center's pretty lucky

The universe, and especially the earth, were clearly intelligently created with humans in mind!
