Wildfires in the drought-stricken state have been burning all summer. The combination of smoke and fog turned deadly.

Caused by ~~super fog~~ drivers who don't know how to adapt driving speed and safety distance to visibility conditions.

Fixed that for you

[-] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 23 points 1 year ago

I hate driving in bad conditions. Not because I’m bad, but because people are fucking idiots and will be doing 90 with zero visibility

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

in every rear-end accident, there was always somebody going slower. Don't be a victim!

/s.

[-] Zorque@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I hate that so many people would argue that's a legitimate reason.

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

yeah. me too.

[-] 21Cabbage@lemmynsfw.com 8 points 1 year ago

Bbbbbb bbbbbb bbbut the speed limit says 75 so I HAVE TO.

[-] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Never outrun your headlights or your visibility.

[-] XTornado@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Or your breaks if raining or similar.

But on the other hand, every second you spend inside the fog puts you at risk. The safest thing you can do is clear the fog as quickly as possible.

The safest thing you can do is pull well off the road, turn off your lights, and wait for the fog to pass.

Also get out your phone because you can sell the footage of the subsequent accident to news channels.

Smoke + fog = smog. Why didn't they just call it that?

[-] Salamendacious@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I asked myself the exact same question as I read it

[-] RojoSanIchiban@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

IIRC while it was originally coined as that portmanteau, it was later "officially" used only for the haze caused by nitrous oxides, ozones and sulfur dioxide from leaded gas/diesel vehicles, coal power, and industrial operations.

Not an etymologist though.

I don't like driving faster than I can see in front of me. TIL: I'd be considered abnormal in New Orleans.

[-] Salamendacious@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

People's willingness to speed in inclement weather boggles my mind.

[-] 21Cabbage@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 1 year ago

Abnormal in every part of the US I've ever been. I just get off the road in adverse conditions because I know people even trying to be safe is a minority. My area has great public transit and pedestrian infrastructure, if I'm driving I've got time to kill.

[-] gibmiser@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Super frog!? Holy shit let's see this thing... oh :(

[-] NeedingvsGetting@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I, too, had to do a double-take

[-] alienanimals@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Another reason why trains > cars.

[-] stifle867@programming.dev 3 points 1 year ago

This literally looks like something from GTA, where you blow up a car and it starts a pile up/explosive chain reaction. The fact this happened in real life is horrifying.

[-] Cold_Brew_Enema@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Fucking morons. Learn to drive.
