This is one of the reasons why bootlegging alcohol was so popular, even outside the prohibition.

Employer starts with holding wages and offering only scrip at the company store so people buy things they can ferment into a mash and distill.

I hate what modern country music has become. There are even examples from the 1980s that keep the working class spirit alive, but sadly I don't think that mindset withstood the Reagan years.

Outlaw Country and Working-Class Country left this world hand-in-hand and were succeeded by some of the most godawful Southern pop music.
