Donald Trump on Monday, January 19 threatened 200% tariffs on French wine and champagne over France's intentions to decline the US leader's invitation to join his "board of peace." The board was originally conceived to oversee the rebuilding of war-torn Gaza, but the charter does not appear to limit its role to the occupied Palestinian territory.

"I'll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes. And he'll join. But he doesn't have to join," Trump said, referring to French President Emmanuel Macron. A source close to Macron told AFP on Monday that France "does not intend to answer favorably" to the invitation.

The board's charter "goes beyond the sole framework of Gaza," the source close to the French president said.

USA is so finished, Americans allowing this shitshow to continue is as ridiculous as the shitshow itself.
The checks and balances were never designed to manage a psychotic criminal administration. And that is still what Americans are relying on!

[-] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

This! 👆

He basically is allowed to do whatever he wants. And people thinking that it is a distraction from the Epstein files, don't realize that he'd be able to walk away from anything they hold too. The problem is not Trump it's the enablers who won't stop him

[-] random_character_a@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

All the smiles behind him in his inauguration are still smiling.

I have high hopes for the US population to slapping back at the midterms. Minneapolis has shown the world that ordinary people can stand up to power.
Having said that, the mayor in jaws was still the mayor in jaws 2.

Sure it was. They just didn't know that all three branches would be filled with psychotic criminals at the same time.

“Do what I say or else I’ll charge my citizens more for your stuff!”

[-] justsomeguy@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

It came to me guys. I was wondering why he was so obsessed with peace because it's not really something you'd expect from someone like him. Then I remembered all the beauty pageants. All those girls on stage babbling something about world peace.

It's burned into his dementia ridden brain by a bunch of exploited minors regurgitating the same bullshit lines over and over again.

[-] paperazzi@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

He's also dying and knows it. He has spoken in the recent past about using peace to ve able to get into heaven. He actually thinks he can barter his way into heaven. The man has no concept, none at all, of human decency for the sake of human decency. He is the worst of the worst of our species and the USians chose to elect him not once, but twice. It says a lot about USian culture, and not in a good way.

[-] borQue@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago

It;s actually a good thing we can keep those fine wines for ourselves now. The Amercians have no taste whatsoever.

[-] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

they just need a little ketchup, that's all.

[-] bluesheep@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

That's how they make the white wine red right?

[-] fishy@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago

No dumbass, they use fruit punch Gatorade.

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 2 points 1 week ago

Oh gods, delete this shit right now. I do not claim this energy. The ketchup wine will have no place in my mind. Begone from me!

[-] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

let the ketchup flow through you

edit: now that I think about it. ketchup should be considered wine. it's made of fruit, can get vinegary, and has lots of sugar in it.

May as well just make the tariffs 4000%.

Do it pussy.

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 7 points 1 week ago

So when are we tariffing the shit out of US products?

I'm sure every business in Europe suddenly having to pay 200% extra for Office 365 and mail handling will send them scrambling for a European alternative.

And they won't go back once they've moved.

[-] m3t00@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

been reading about several mandating open source in government offices. due to low quality, low security microsoft crap. give them more reasons.

[-] TheHotze@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Yes please, let's make foss default.

[-] MBech@feddit.dk 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I had a talk about this with my boss today. We'd be fairly fucked in my department without Autodesk products. Sure, we could probably get a different software that can do similar things, but the department would become incredibly inefficient very quickly. Our product quality would suffer immensely, and our manual labour hours in production would skyrocket.

[-] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 7 points 1 week ago

Didn't the supre court said that those tariffs were ilegal and the government is going to reimburse like a trillion?

[-] sobchak@programming.dev 3 points 1 week ago

I don't think so. I think some lower courts did, but the Supreme Court changed the rules to ban "blanket injunctions," so every wronged party has to bring their case to the courts and considered on a case-by-case basis. I think there's a case about tariffs that the Supreme Court is supposed to rule on but haven't yet. The admin, right now, can seemingly do anything it wants by just tying up courts with large numbers of illegal acts. They face no consequences for doing so, and the Supreme Court is mostly complicit (and illegitimate).

[-] AceOnTrack@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago

Also didn't he try that a few years ago and French winemakers didn't notice the difference?

[-] songwriterallnighter@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

I remember reading smth along those lines

Trump is having a speed-run on running the US into the ground as hard as possible. You clowns that voted this Nazi in 🤡👏

[-] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

I'm guessing that the people who buy actual Champagne in the US don't notice the price and won't notice the tariffs. Plus $100, $200, $1000 per bottle - whatever.

And that's why the EU made sure there is now the Mercosur deal with South America, Canada free trade deal, deal with Australia, the deal with Indonesia and probably some I forgot. We all knew this moment would come.

Gonna be the saddest shit ever if the EU placates this dementia-ridden chucklefuck. I'm hoping they can figure out a long-term viable economic plan that cuts out the US but I'm not all that hopeful they won't just appease him to maintain the status quo.

[-] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

They really, really need to prioritize separating themselves from dependence on American tech companies and payment processors. That has to be accomplished to shield themselves.

Then they can and should embargo us and seize American assets until we get in line. After which they can resume trade, but keep the assets of the American oligarchs who have refused to defy the fascists.

Trump's always wanted to be a mobster, even though he lacks the skill.

[-] hraegsvelmir@ani.social 2 points 1 week ago

This gives us the possibility for one of the funniest ends to this, where Trump gets in a pissing match with Italy over something, tries to extort them with tariffs, and the Italian mob takes him out for trying to squeeze in on their territory.
