I didn’t even know the link was from .ml. I haven’t blocked the instance completely, just some communities.

Post: https://vger.to/piefed.co.za/c/fediverse/p/21296/piefed-users-surge

Link to comment: https://vger.to/sh.itjust.works/comment/23563769

I’m not sure if blocking them deletes their comments like the piefed code suggested, but I’m done. I don’t have time to deal with drama on the fediverse, and I don’t care what comes from this. I just thought others would get a chuckle about how petty this is.

I was in that thread! It was a good one. Meanwhileongrad called us fascist bootlickers for... checking and commenting on the code.

Fuck Piefed.

Oh, and the mod is wrong for tone policing and paper thin defence of a blatant karma system.

[-] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Yeah I saw Goat's comment there, that was really shitty. I really hope that a majority of Lemmy doesn't insist on moving to piefed because even though Rimu and his cronies argue the feature can be turned off, it doesn't really matter because having a karma system at all means it can be used to restrict people wherever it is enabled.

And it is enabled by default and therefore will be enabled on the majority of piefed instances out there.

[-] monkeyjoe@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

PieFed is made by liberal reddiors, for liberal reddiors. With a worse layout than new reddit, somehow.

When Microsoft makes its shit opt-out, it's horrid. When Piefed does it, it's justified that you have to recompile to remove them!

[-] Wren@lemmy.today 3 points 3 days ago

On the other hand — the more we talk about piefed's features, the more we'll know about the kind of people who join piefed.

[-] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

Except a lot of people are being kept in the dark about the shortcomings of piefed, it's trendy and cool because it's ""new"" and different than lemmy. Which is why a lot of people join it, including people who would be very against karma requirements being used as a weapon like on Reddit.

That's what's scary, a lot of people joining piefed being misled under false pretenses or just not being told upfront what they're getting gives the platform more power. It makes piefed seem more legitimate. And more piefed instances popping up means those Karma requirements can ultimately effect Lemmy users too. I've seen a couple people point it out the score of Lemmy users on piefed already.

[-] Wren@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago

Lots of people just don't look at the features anyway.

I joined piefed to check it out, left because I didn't like it. I was neutral-cold about it until I read about how the code functions.

We can make more posts about how it actually works to make sure more people see it.

[-] monkeyjoe@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

Fascism is when you read the documented code that does what it does and criticize it. But when they call out the long removed slur filter, that's valid.

No posting links or talking in a way the Piefed dev doesn't like, but you can say racial slurs! That's freedom baby!

[-] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

Actually I think he's trying to use it as an appeal to hypocrisy also known as Tu quoque. And he's using it to try and argue we don't get to criticize him because Lemmy does it too. Except it doesn't work like that, because Tu quoque is a logical fallacy.

Also Lemmy's devs removed the API to get user scores because they feared it would be used to enforce Karma on Lemmy, and they were right to do that. It still kind of is but it would be way worse if they made it easier. You know, like piefed does.

[-] Wren@lemmy.today 4 points 4 days ago

I love it when someone asks which slurs they would like to say.

[-] monkeyjoe@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Weird how Goat is mad that you are not willing to bend over to his echo chamber and not tolerate his actions. While browsing your profile for dirt. Because that's normal.

When Goat does it, it's justified. He's "interested in extremism" while having spies on group chats he's banned from for xenophobia. But how dare you comment in another community!

And I know he's reading this, instead of having a normal life.

Edit: yep, he is! Blocked his dumbass, he thinks I'm an alt of some dipshit.

[-] Wren@lemmy.today 2 points 3 days ago

Yeah, I saw that. I say good luck, I'm positive as fuck.

[-] monkeyjoe@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

And he has dm'd me calling me an alt of some dumb username. Very good faith behavior from this person.

Edit: had to block his dumbass to stop harassing me in DMs. What a charmer. No wonder he spends all day stalking accounts, can't get a human to enjoy company with.

[-] Wren@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Well that's a crazy thing to do. But you can still see them even if they're blocked?

[-] monkeyjoe@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I can't, no. Which is nice.

But yes, goat is a weirdo. "Anyone who doesn't like me is an alt! My account is normal! Lemme defend genocide!"

[-] monkeyjoe@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

"it's not about the slurs, I just think I should be able to happily read slurs."

"So you want more racism? That's your argument?"

"Don't put words in my mouth, I simply said I wanted more slurs to be used."

[-] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 19 points 1 week ago

They seem to be deliberately ignoring that your link was to a specific comment, and the meme isn't even a prominent part of the page.

I've seen worse, but still a weak PTB.

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip 17 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

They have a point. If you linked to the big long comment with source code examples, that would be more useful.

Edit: never mind, you did. Following these links between interfaces and instances is difficult and confusing. PTB for sure.

[-] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 1 week ago

We're at the point there are people including the creator of piefed saying only they can give valid info on the code so just ignore anyone showing it.

Only can comment in approved areas

[-] lmmarsano@lemmynsfw.com 15 points 1 week ago

That moderator @snoopy@tarte.nuage-libre.fr sure acts entitled by policing tone. Their pointless gestures of defending honor

I also asked users to edit their comment, here, when they critized lemmy and i expect you to do the same.

are unnecessary. Still, they've only requested, so they aren't (yet) powertripping.

[-] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago

They also know they're wrong as fuck otherwise they would've come here to whine about how the OP is a liar and misrepresented them or whatever, but they didn't.

[-] Diva@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 week ago

Piefed.1984 strikes again

PTB

[-] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 week ago

PTB, this mod is just trying to silence criticism of piefed. I've said it before and I will say it again. Piefed's score system is one of the worst additions to it ever. This is Reddit's karma system on Lemmy, and we all know why that is bad at this point.

[-] punkisundead@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 week ago

I don’t have time to deal with drama on the fediverse

X doubt

Also getting asked to do something is really not included in my definition of powertripping. BPR

[-] Pamasich@kbin.earth 14 points 1 week ago

Really don't see the bait in what OP posted.

Also getting asked to do something is really not included in my definition of powertripping.

Powertripping is a mod abusing their position and power.

Sure usually they just remove posts or ban people, but using their position and the implied threat of removal to pressure someone into weakening their argument (by removing sources) or removing personal opinions the mod doesn't like (which aren't toxic in any way, we're not talking bigotry here) definitely still is powertripping.

[-] Flames5123@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 week ago

Asked to edit an opinionated comment or have my post removed? Kinda weird imo.

I give everyone two replies and then block if I feel any negative emotion afterwards so I don’t get sucked in. I’m not trying to start anything. I just want people to be aware.

[-] UniversalMonk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

PTB!

I was a fan of piefed in the beginning. But the fun wore off quick, and I think they're very pro-censorship lately, so now I'm back on Lemmy only.

[-] tastemyglaive@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 days ago

you made your bed, now lie in it

[-] UniversalMonk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Considering that ya got banned everywhere just now, looks like your bed is much messier than mine. :)

[-] hendrik@palaver.p3x.de 4 points 1 week ago

I don't think engaging with someone and their opinion is a particularly high form of powertripping. I mean I like dissent way more than the modern form of making it disappear. Either by mods actually clicking on the 'remove' button, or by devising filter bubble algorithms so everyone gets to blast their arbitrary opinions out there without a need to catch any flak.

[-] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 week ago

They're basically telling you to be kinder in how you make your points, while engaging with your argument in good faith.

What's the problem?

[-] Flames5123@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

They did ask me to remove my source link though.

[-] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I would not have complied with that. Or maybe I'd have edited in a quote to replace the link as malicious compliance.

But theyre also not trying to deny the presence of the "social score" you're criticizing. They're actually engaging with you, so until they fly off the handle in response to you reacting reasonably, react reasonably.

[-] Flames5123@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

Yea, I’m not editing my original comment. The last thing I did was just address that I linked the comment, not the meme, which someone here pointed out.

[-] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

OK, don't edit your comment.

They asked, without demanding. And while you could take their mention of removal as a threat, I take it as a dare to be reasonable, since they are pointing out that you might be aiming to push their buttons more than make a point for others to see.

"You'd be better off on reddit" is what probably set them off here, and I don't see why'd you stand by that. Piefed isn't worse than reddit, claiming it is doesn't make any kind of logical argument, it just illustrates that you're either on the trolly or unhinged side of the subject.

Regardless of which it is, they're literally inviting you to make your case, as long as you tone down the stuff that's more likely anger than convince.

[-] thoro@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 week ago

Tone policing is good and ok when the user isn't attacking, insulting, or harassing an individual?

[-] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I'm paraphrasing, but how is "you would all be better off on reddit" not an insult?

The disrespect expressed there is immense.

It's not an argument, or piece of logic. It's literally just "you are so wrong, you're worse than collectively hated thing".

[-] thoro@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 week ago

The actual comment was:

Piefed is great at putting in new features and making everything pretty. But it’s so opinionated, you’re better off on Reddit, imo.

Which, I'm sorry, is just incredibly mild. The user isn't hurling insults or slurs, calling a user names, etc. Not harassing neither.

It's a disagreement, and yes a comparison to Reddit, but it's very tepid criticism, imo.

[-] Emopunker@feddit.org -3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I'd say partially PTB, partially BPR. You could have worded your comment better, because it sounds like you intend to prod them. However the mod reaction is also an overreaction.

Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1513 readers
22 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.
