I made this awl about four years ago. Its made from hard maple, a stainless steel rod and a copper pipe.

I turned the handle on a lathe, drilled the hole and inserted the rod, applied the ferrule. I then used a bench grinder to sharpen the rod to a point.

This past week I decided to reapply some tung oil and finally added the flat spot to help prevent it from rolling around. I found the natural grain of the wood and used a chisel to split the wood. I did that until enough of the wood was removed and used a card scraper to give me a smooth surface.

I am currently debating if I should turn it on the lathe to take off 1/4" from the diameter to make it a little more comfortable to hold.

That'll probably take me another four years to decide. Maybe I should change the title...
