Google is no longer a search engine.

It's a storefront.

Multitool (lemmy.world)
submitted 9 months ago by fujiwood@lemmy.world to c/edc@sopuli.xyz

I carry a Leatherman Rebar when I know I'll need a few more tools in my pocket. It's only a few times a month but when I do it's indispensable.

The size is both small enough to fit comfortably in my pocket while be substantial enough to feel like a real tool. The tools I use the most are the pliers, Philips screw driver, and wire cutters.

This model locks the tools while they are open which I prefer but it lacks scissors, a replaceable bit driver and has, in my opinion, a light duty knife.

13 year old Zippo (lemmy.world)
submitted 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) by fujiwood@lemmy.world to c/edc@sopuli.xyz

I've had this Zippo since early 2011. According to the markings it was made in August of 2010.

I don't always carry it but when I know I'm going to need a lighter it's what I use. I have other lighters around the house, for candles/starting the grill, but when I go out this one is in my pocket.

It was originally the matte black model but after more than a decade I decided to use acetone to remove the coating. It's now raw brass which I do like.

The only downside of this lighter is that the original insert will lose fluid over a few days. I did add a small piece of this plastic over the bottom of the insert to act as a gasket. It does improve the time it takes for the fluid to evaporate by about double.

I know there are flame and torch inserts but I prefer the simple mechanism of this. I've had other torch lighters in the past and they always seem to break. If something on this Zippo ever breaks I know I can repair it with a repair kit. I don't mind disposable lighters since they work well and serve a purpose but I enjoy the permanence of a Zippo.

I recently made myself a Midori inspired notebook. It's 5 oz veg tan leather that I dyed.

I received a new watch as a Christmas gift.

It's the Vaer S5 Tradition which originally came with a silicone and khaki nylon strap. Since I prefer nato straps, I swapped it for my old watch strap. It's a 40 mm case with sapphire crystal and screwdown crown. The lume is honestly better than I expected.

Stitching Vice (lemmy.world)
submitted 11 months ago by fujiwood@lemmy.world to c/leathercraft@lemmy.ca

I don't own a stitching pony so this is how I decided to hold my work. It's not perfect as the thread sometimes get caught on the vice and it's only three inches wide but it's much faster than trying to hold the piece with my hands as I stitch it.

I’m sorry to be the spelling guy but it’s “phobia” not “fobia”

EDC: Upgrades (lemmy.world)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by fujiwood@lemmy.world to c/edc@sopuli.xyz

My Orbitkey was beginning to fray since I've had it for over five years. I made a replacement for the old canvas from 5 oz veg-tan leather. I've had my old wallet for a year and half. It was the first thing I ever made and I've never been completely happy with it. It worked well enough but there were small details that always bothered me. This week I made a new wallet from ~4 oz veg-tan leather and gave it some color. I was originally aiming for a sage green but I still need more practice dyeing which means it's now a dark green. I decided to wet form my pen into the front pocket of the wallet so it's less likely to fall out. I'm very pleased.

I was wondering if it would be possible to add an option to schedule a post for a specific time/date. Not a recurring post or anything like that. I think that would actually be bad for Lemmy. Just a single post set to a certain time to help improve engagement.

Thanks

Find a RSS aggregator that you like and add the RSS feeds of websites you enjoy going to. I'm assuming most have the ability to search websites based off topics to help you get started.

The feed will show you every update those websites makes automatically.

There's no comments or frivolous things. Just headlines, images and text of the webpage.

It's a nice reprieve from social media.

Orbitkey Refresh (lemmy.world)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by fujiwood@lemmy.world to c/leathercraft@lemmy.ca

I've had my Orbitkey Black Edition: Canvas for over five years and it has started to fray and become weathered. I decided to give it new life and remade it using some 5 oz Veg-Tan leather. It wasn't the most difficult thing to make but I like that I didn't have to replace something simply because it's old. I'm very pleased with how it came out.

Everyone always asks what is gravity.

No one ever asks how is gravity.

Poor gravity, always helping us keep our shit together but no one ever truly understands the weight on gravities shoulder.

I remember when Vice was "bleeding-edge-unwavering-unapologetic-raw-insert-other-catchy-adjective news! The stories no one else has the genitals to cover!"

I never personally thought that but I'm pretty sure that's what they wanted other people to think.

My first thought is they are running low on food.

My guess is probably due to over fishing and die off due to climate change. They probably don't understand the climate part but they can see ships take all their food.

Hence they are starting to attack the things that take their food. This is 100% my opinion.

You're not going to like what I'm about to say.

You're part of the problem. You can fix it though.

Ready?

You need to make original content for the communities you are apart of and stop expecting others to provide you the conent you want. Because if that's what everyone did, then there would be absolutely nothing here.

That's just the way it is right now. There's not enough original content creators on Lemmy yet.

What does original content mean? It doesn't mean reposts from other websites. It doesn't mean articles from other websites. The original content was already posted by the writers of the articles, on the original website. It doesn't mean comments you make. My comment here isn't original content. It's a reaction.

Original content is something you make. You baked some sourdough bread? Post. You made a chair from wood? Post. You made something out of leather? Post. You took a nice photo? Post. You made some digital art? Post. You drew a sketch of a building? Post. You did "insert hobby"? Post. You're a collector of this niche thing? Post.

The truth is, original content can be hard and time-consuming. It takes a certain mind to want to post original content. If everyone here would make just one original content post, I think that would help make Lemmy a better social media site.

Be the change.

How am I supposed to make a filter to block "X"? I know Lemmy doesn't support it yet but on Boost I could add filters to block certain posts with words/names.

I'm hoping that Boost for Lemmy will have this feature but my first question still stands. Blocking Twitter was easy because it was specific. How am I supposed to block a letter? I

A community garden(Reddit) with bad, broken or non existent tools.

Volunteer workers(Mods) bring their own tools(3rd party apps) to maintain the garden. Other volunteers(Reddit OC contributing users) plant seeds, water and harvest the garden. Other non-volunteers (Non-OC contributing users who only consume media) benefit, leech and take home food.

Garden owners(Reddit) decide to charge tool companies to allow their tools into the garden(3rd party app makers being charged for API access). Tool companies(3rd party app makers) can't pay exorbitant amounts. Volunteer maintenance workers(Mods) can no longer use outside tools(3rd party apps) to upkeep the garden.

The workers(Mods) become angry and disruptive by limiting access to the garden(Mods privatize and demonetize subreddits).

Non-Contributing leechers become upset. "We don't care about you workers! Give us food!"("No one cares about you Mods! We want to mindlessly consume! Give us media!")

Workers and real gardeners leave to find a better garden (Mods and OC contributors leave to find a better social media platform).

Old garden fills with weeds and dog shit(Reddit fills with reposts and bots).

The End.
