I want that dude's furry UI mock-up posted the other day. That was actually cool looking.

Reminder: telegram is a r*ssian honeypot that is made with fsb money.

Source?

"Trust me bro"

[-] kwozyman@lemmy.world 14 points 15 hours ago

You're allowed to say "Russian" here. You are also correct. Perhaps not in the strict sense of it being a honeypot, but it is under Russian control.

[-] eleitl@lemmy.zip 8 points 11 hours ago

It isn't. It is why Russia has launched their Max messenger, are throttling Telegram functions and is forcing patriotic channels which are already registered with Roskomnadsor over to Max.

[-] Etnaphele@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

I think they used dirty money for VK and then funded telegram with VK’s forced sellout to the Russian dictatorship, but now they are quite on their own? If I’m wrong, I would really like to dig deeper, maybe you have links to help me?

The founder had to flee Russia for his anti Putin stance.

Telegram wouldn't be used by Ukrainians and Ukrainian government officials if it was a FSB tool. The Ukrainian government knows better than random forum posters.

[-] kwozyman@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

In fact, Ukraine has decided to severely restrict Telegram use, especially because of Russian intelligence having access to data: https://www.rnbo.gov.ua/en/Diialnist/6994.html?hl=en-US

In fact, Ukraine has decided to severely restrict Telegram use

"in government agencies, military formations, and critical infrastructure facilities"

Duh. Of course unencrypted government secrets do not belong on 3rd party services. Guess what: Russia doesn't do that either.

especially because of Russian intelligence having access to data

"Telegram is actively used by the enemy for cyberattacks, spreading phishing and malware" ... "Telecommunications companies are constantly subject to cyber attacks by russian hackers."

Telegram must not be used by certain sectors because it can be attacked. That's different from the wrong claim that FSB controls Telegram. If that was the case all of Telegram would be forbidden for all of Ukraine and that's not the case.

[-] kwozyman@lemmy.world 1 points 38 minutes ago

The Chief of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov provided substantiated evidence that russian special services have access to personal correspondence of Telegram users, even deleted messages, as well as their personal data.

[-] woelkchen@lemmy.world 1 points 18 minutes ago

Having hacked Telegram servers on occasion is not the same as being in charge of Telegram. These are just different things.

I mean, he was also arrested by French authorities. The guy seems to be quite fishy to say the least.

Macron? Yes.

[-] deafboy@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Telegram can read all your text mesasges, unless you specifically setup an encrypted one-on-one channel between users that's tied to a specific device, so basically nobody is using that. It does not have to actively siphon the conversations to a state actor, an exploit chain or the good old infiltration by a rogue employee is enough.

Disclaimer: I use telegram, but have zero expectations of privacy there.

It also wouldn't be the first time the russian government is using an organization for their own agenda abroad, while banning it in russia.

I'm not claiming that Telegram is perfection, I'm disputing the wild claim that Telegram is a FSB tool just because the founder is Russian.

As someone who likes blur design and liquid glass. Its cool.

I checked and my client has this UI. But, the blur is so opaque I did not notice the blur even though I have been on the redesign for a while.

[-] woelkchen@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Had to check and I was migrated as well. Honestly, I didn't even notice it because the bottom icon bar is standard in many Android apps since many years (even Google+ had it). The collapsible sidebar is a relic of ancient times. I don't think making the icon car pill shaped is necessarily the same as liquid glass. The iPad I have to use for work has a much more obnoxious UI.

[-] victorz@lemmy.world 19 points 16 hours ago

The hell. Why use the design language of another platform?

[-] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 16 hours ago

Simplicity. If you can compile the same code into two different platforms, you have less to deal with in the future. Else you’re going to run into bugs in one set of code but not the other.

You’re still going to run into platform specific bugs, though.

[-] woelkchen@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago

The clients for both systems are developed entirely separately.

[-] victorz@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago

I feel like you should be able to have some sort of shared library between the two platforms where you can have backend facing code and maintain that as a single truth, then develop the apps for different platforms independently. But sure, it's a matter of resources obviously.

[-] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 7 points 15 hours ago

Laziness. You can use the same code base for both platforms if you want and then simply swap out the UI or skin quite trivially. But they lazy as fuck.

[-] victorz@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago

Glad I dumped their asses for Signal when I found out Grok was coming to Telegram as a chat bot. I said hell naw.

[-] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

Yep. I noped out. Exported all my data using the Desktop application and deleted my many years old account.

[-] glitching@lemmy.ml 3 points 13 hours ago

haven't used telegram in ages, but it's kinda depressing that it's still neck and shoulder above anything else UX-wise. can't someone rip them off, really don't see any meaningful consequences to that end. it's not like they invented any of the UI glitz...
