If you don't cinch it up too tightly, it's no more constricting than buttoning the top button on the shirt. Not that wearing one makes any sense, but it's not trying to kill you, either.

[-] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Yeah, I rarely do the top button and rarely keep my tie tight. I've got it down to a science to where it looks right, but still loose, because I cannot stand stuff around my neck.

They'd like to respond but they are choking.

[-] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Oh I thought they said they were JOKING before they fainted!

[-] hector@lemmy.today 1 points 3 months ago

Not tight enough for my tastes. I would tighten them all the way.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 8 points 3 months ago

Don't tie it so tight 🤷‍♂️

[-] Wataba@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 months ago

Growing up in the Mormon Church, I remember a time some asshole just unilaterally decided to redo my tie in a harsh knot that was too tight. Didn't ask if it was okay, just went right ahead and decided my own safe, loose knot wasn't good enough or something.

Just having a complete flashback to that because of this article. Obsession over minute details is just laughably silly when it leads to health problems.

[-] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 months ago

I hope now that you're grown up you have no need of hysterical frauds like religion?

[-] Smaagi@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 months ago

And now let's take a look at everyone at Wallstreet, it's all ties and red faces. Probably way more than 7,5% lol

[-] circuscritic@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Just keep the last top button unbuttoned, and hide it with the knot.

I never want to wear a tie, but it's not hard to keep it just loose enough where it's not outright uncomfortable.

[-] ickplant@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

Fuck the Man, ditch the tie!

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 3 months ago

the only good thing about wearing a tie was the glorious fealing of pulling it down as you walked out the door at the end of the work day and unbuttoning that top collar button or two.

[-] ickplant@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

so THAT's the equivalent of me taking off my bra at the end of the day! Someone was asking this on Lemmy earlier.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 3 months ago

lol. as I was writing the response I kinda wondered if women did that walking out the door. Was just asking my wife and she mentioned liking having the ones that open in front so she could free them up a bit when she got in the car. I have not had to wear ties in a long time and it has been awhile since she has worn real ones as she went jog to camesals now.

[-] Reyali@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

I believe the word you’re looking for is “camisole.”

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 3 months ago

yeah my realtionship with spelling is kinda rough even with often used words.

[-] Reyali@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I realize now my comment could have come off as judgy. It wasn’t; just meant to be informative! I wouldn’t even call that an often-used word, so I thought it reasonable that you’d just never seen it written before!

[-] damnedfurry@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

What an idiotic article (and website in general, looks Buzzfeed-tier). From its linked source:

Negative cerebrovascular effects can be expected by compressing jugular veins and carotids

No shit.

by a necktie.

Nobody is wearing a tie that tightly, and even if it is deliberately made that tight when you put it on, it's not like a noose, it'll loosen on its own almost immediately as you start moving around. There are no springs in a tie maintaining the tension.

[-] BanMe@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Shirt collars don't move the way necks do, so it really depends on posture and movement, I'd say my posture was about the best in my day when I was standing in front of a mirror putting the tie on and judging my appearance, and then 20 minutes later I'd be sitting at my desk hunched forward and it would be a lot less comfortable, so I could see it.

Also I remember from hours and hours of starting at old men's necks in church how their flesh would spill out the backs and sides of their collars while they sat there listening to the preacher.

[-] unphazed@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

Neckties belong in business, but not all business. I threw a big stink when I worked at Kohls. Women could wear polos, slacks, etc. Men had to wear dress shirts and ties, slacks or dress pants. It's retail, ties can get caught on a lot of shit (registers, conveyors, doors, etc). Took a year but the Regional manager finally saw the light and later it became corporate policy. Women also couldn't wear necklaces for the same reason.

[-] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 months ago

Decorative nooses have always been a weird thing IMO. Like "gee, id like a dangling piece of fabric that, if it gets caught on something, chokes me and may pull me face first into heavy machinery"

[-] assembly@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

I never understood why anyone would want to wear a tie. It’s a capitalist noose and at the same time also so unnecessarily dangerous.

[-] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 4 points 3 months ago

Back in the day, people generally had fewer shirts and they were typically the same color, usually white. A tie was developed as a way to have a bit of varying color for a suit without needing as much fabric.

[-] myserverisdown@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Because I never truly need to wear one and I like the patterns and style of the ties I own? What kind of question is this?

People just like to accessorize. Not everything is that deep lol

[-] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Well, you don't wear them around heavy machinery. Unless court and similar settings are heavy machinery in the figurative sense.

[-] Lumisal@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Elevators are pretty heavy.

But idk, maybe you're like, extremely buff

[-] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Ties make no sense. It's literally a strip of cloth tied around your neck that serves no useful purpose at all. It's idiotic that they have managed to survive as a part of modern clothing.

[-] hark@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Maybe it's to hide the line of buttons on the shirt.

[-] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Do people not know how to buy a proper fitting shirt and not cinch a tie too tight?

[-] Baggie@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 months ago

Bro my neck cannot be contained

I'm partially joking but it is impossible to get a fitted shirt for me without basically getting it made from scratch

[-] a_jackal@pawb.social 1 points 3 months ago

Are you a formula 1 driver by any chance

[-] Baggie@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 months ago

Nah, I think I might just be built that way. Incorrectly.

[-] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 months ago

Kingpin over here

[-] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 months ago

Having grown up Mormon; this was obvious. I could always feel my brain being choked off but would get in trouble if the tie looked loose.

[-] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

My parents almost joined a Hindu cult while I was a kid. Thank goodness they found it and the people annoying so we never attended again. I have distant relatives in that cult and they're crazy people. They swap wives and do drugs and then say we're not pious and god fearing enough.

[-] circuscritic@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 months ago

Your parents took you to a swinger party?

[-] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Ugh not in the cult. I'm trying to point out how hypocritical they are

[-] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 months ago

...how do I sign up?

[-] Vandals_handle@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Mormon, brain choked off, 🤔

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Remember all those bankers, lawyers, and managers wearing ties each and every day? Now you know why they act like they do.

BTW, the tie not only reduces the oxygen supply to the brain, it also increases the risk of strokes by about 10%.

[-] Psiczar@aussie.zone 2 points 3 months ago

How tight are they tying them?!

[-] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

It is supposed to be a tie, not a hangman's noose.

[-] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

If you tie it that tight you'll feel the blood pounding in your head and feel like you are suffocating. I can't imagine someone making it that tight and not immediately loosening it.

[-] MadBits@europe.pub 1 points 3 months ago

Highly doubt this for some reason.

[-] LordCrom@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Hevent worn a tie for any reason other than a funeral in the last 20 years. I refuse. If I show up to work in a T-shirt with no holes I'm dressed up.

Its funny being the only one at the senior staff meeting in an Iron Maiden T while everyone else is suit and tie. Good thing I'm good at what I do

[-] epicthundercat@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

This makes the business world and politicians make sense.

[-] Paranoidfactoid@lemmy.world 0 points 3 months ago

Neck ties are over. They used to be central to mens' fashion. Now if you wear one it's because you have to, which denotes low status. Like, the worst is chinos, a cheap shirt and tie, with a windbreaker instead of a blazer. Also: black sneakers. For some crazy reason, it's actually higher status to wear designer sweats around.

The look for business is slacks, a good pressed shirt, a fitted blazer with no shoulder pads, and NO TIE. Top neck button undone. It's also more comfortable. Even top execs are dressing like this. Ties are only necessary in the most formal occasions.

[-] Zwrt@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 3 months ago

I like wearing neckties to family parties because they remind me of my godfather

Couldn’t care less about business

This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?
