I’m trying to decide between a trip to Colombia or Argentina for next year. Where would y’all like to travel if you could?

The Andramada Galaxy
I'd like to claim a star system before we merge galaxies and everyone else does.

Wow that sounds like an expensive trip, but worth it!

Better hurry up, not much time left.

I know.
I'm such a procrasstorator.
I'll probably miss my chance.

China is ranking high on my list of places I'd like to visit right now. A very different place, a bit challenging to travel to, and what I'm assuming is a bit less touristy than the rest of the well-visited world.

If I spoke Chinese I would love to go to Yunnan. Any specific place in China on your list?

I honestly haven't looked into the matter enough to say.

ok so current time and political stuff but unlimited budget. mmm. I would visit turkey and buy a XPM78 with my unlimited budget and have it stocked for the voyage back and all extra spaceI would fill with gold and platinum jewelery. More legitamately I would do these private villa buyouts where you get like an island with a mansion and full staff just for you for a period. More conventionally I would go to tokyo and stay at HOSHINOYA Tokyo.

Wow! Well thought out. Do you know how to drive a boat?

that particular model is supposedly mostly automated but you will need a friend to have a watch shift.

I can't be perfectly objective because i haven't been to Argentina, but Colombia was great last year.

Beautiful mountains, modern city, great food, good people.

The weather is 365 21-23C, very comfortable

I have been to both, and I did like Colombia more. Where in Colombia did you go? I’ve been to Bogota of course, Medellin and Santa Marta.

[-] bitofarambler@crazypeople.online 2 points 2 months ago

Only medellin. I almost want to bogota next because of its fairly wild elevation and then reading wikivoyage found out the elevation of cusco and went there instead, loved cusco so much

[-] GooseGang@beehaw.org 2 points 2 months ago

Awesome! I was only in Bogota briefly but the food was good and people were friendly. Cuzco is a cute city, but takes some getting used to with the altitude like you said

I lucked out with the altitude and didn't end up sick in Cusco, but i did run a lot in medellin beforehand to try to prepare, so maybe that paid off.

Are you any closer to making your travel choice?

[-] GooseGang@beehaw.org 2 points 2 months ago

Ah good idea. It’s probably Colombia, but I’m not sure where. I needed a motivating savings goal, so fingers crossed.

Very nice. Venezuelans, Colombians, Guatemalans, Panamanians all told me to go to Medellin and I had a great time. Everyone was nice, great public parks, very decent monthly rentals on Airbnb and really cool public transit where you can take cable cars up the mountains around the cities. Good hikes with exercise parks at the top.

Medellin is now my alternate start-traveling location I recommend for affordability, health care, culture, food, and general easygoing-ness. It has most things Thailand has plus a way more comfortable climate.

I've been to Argentina and have family there, and sadly have to lean towards advising against visiting at the moment. The political and economic situation is one reason, and it pains me to say this, but if our friends & relatives there are anything to go by, the constant whining would be a total showstopper for me.

Having said that, if you have to go, do consider Bariloche, Puerto Madryn, Salta (book a tour to Jujuy if you don't mind the altitude) and Iguazú (both the Argentine and Brazilian half are fine). Be extra careful in Buenos Aires - read up on all the ways tourists are scammed beforehand, only use official taxis and avoid La Boca after 17:00.

Be aware that your credit card may or may not work, and that cash withdrawal at banks and ATMs is both severely limited and hugely expensive. Currency exchanges were also routinely out of cash at least until a couple years ago. We've found the best way to obtain cash is to send yourself money by Western Union.

I would love to a river cruise through Europe during the next Euros and go to a watch party in Paris when when the French are playing, a watch party in Munich when the Germans are playing and a watch party in Madrid when the Spanish are playing and a watch party somewhere in Italy when the Italian team is playing. I finally spend a week hanging around Florence.
