I made kimchi on Sunday because I miss it! There used to be Korean and Japanese restaurants here, but they went out of business or moved to a bigger city.

I miss the cosmopolitan culinary choices (ie: Hmart or 99 Ranch) from the US, but definitely not the prices.

I can't speak for the whole of my country due to it being the US, but in my city, I don't know a single place that does takoyaki or hot pot in general.

With hot pot I can see why it wouldn't be feasible because a parent sues over not watching their kid drop their electronics into the hot oil, but takoyaki wouldn't be a big deal! I need more takoyaki!

toronto and seattle have incredible variety but i'm sure it depends on the diaspora

[-] locuester@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

Lots of cities in the US have hot pot.

Chicago style Pizza. It's almost never made in my own country much less anywhere else.

[-] tastemyglaive@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Gumbo. I’m still working on getting the brown roux dark enough, but can make a passable attempt.

Maduros street tacos

Basically fried plantains, cuban black beans, raw onion, cilantro, sriracha and lime on corn tortilla

It is absolutely made in the US but not in most places. Made some about 2 hours ago and they are delicious

Make the corn tortilla yourself trust me, store bought is shit and falls apart.

Indian food

Also Italian pasta and pizza made in the original ways, they're a completely different food if you make it without cutting corners

Weird that moussaka is pretty common in Australia with the greek diaspora here, but I only rarely see stifado.

There is a food called murtabak that ive never seen outside of Singapore and Malaysia.

Its like a stuffed roti that you dip in curry. Fantastic and I wish I could find it in Europe.

I do love a good Paella; especially seafood with plenty of lemon juice squeezed on.

A really well made Steak Tartare is great too

"Well made steak tartare"

U wot m8?

That's just raw hamburger with bits in it.

By what criteria can you consider raw hamburger with bits thrown in "well made"?

the quality and proportions of the meat, egg, shallots, capers, mustard, tabasco and worcester sauce make all the difference. I've had it DIY style, and I've had it pre-made, and one particular time in Bruges it was made to absolute perfection

[-] tastemyglaive@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

tbf if you can eat raw meat in Egypt or Michigan without dying, they won, they officially made it well

Papa Rellena... It's basically a ground beef stuffed potato croquette (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papa_rellena). I could basically eat them all day every day if they were more readily available (and cheaper) where I live.

[-] GooseGang@beehaw.org 2 points 1 day ago

Have you tried Boliyucas? They’re similar and easier to make.

[-] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 2 days ago

Tlayuda. I've never seen it outside of Oaxaca.

CW: meatsichuan boiled fish ({水煮鱼|shuǐzhǔyú}) is delicious, but you can only find it at the rare real Chinese restaurants, not the americanized ones.
