It’s too late. Account deleted.

They're still going forward with the new verification system, just with a different company.

Discord: we heard your complaints so we're switching our age verification to a completely different company owned by the totally different person Teter Phiel :)

Crazy that Microsoft would need to partner with a Thiel gig to begin with.

[-] hector@lemmy.today 48 points 4 days ago

A little late, the fact that they tried to already means they really really really can't be trusted, that they will repartner later, and perhaps right away working through a third party that routes the work back through them.

You don't partner with the guy that wants to spray his critics and opponents with fentanyl from drones, that runs a spy service being used to run all of our information through to make social scores and deliver half baked threat assessments that will be used against us in secret with no way to see let alone challenge.

The guy is literally bragging about being the antichrist to the reality based crowd that knows every accusation is a confession. He revels in it. The brains behind doge exporting all government agency data to his and whatever other data centers secretly. From his non congress made agency helmed by the non senate approved leader.

Discord is poison, they are run by the wrong people and can't be trusted, they already sold you out, only the details of how they will do it are to be decided. Join the fediverse instead and help make better versions that can acheive critical mass. I hear matrix is good.

Discord said it could determine the ages of most users using the “information we already have.”

This is the most terrifying statement of this article.

Folks, use e2ee services, especially if you're going to do voice or video.

That’s good news, but it’s a little late. I’ve already started migrating my communities to Matrix. I don’t think I could trust Discord again, honestly.

Yea, too late

[-] RaoulDook@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

... after they got exposed by hackers that revealed the facial recognition system tied into government surveillance systems

[-] paultimate14@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago

Discord has been getting worse and worse for years. They've been letting venture capital it's the business for years, and filed plans for an IPO last month.

This was finally the push needed to get the lovely FOSS communuty motivated to make replacements.

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Wasn't it VC-funded from the start?

[-] paultimate14@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Yes, and the amount has also been increasing.

[-] fonix232@fedia.io 10 points 4 days ago

Too little, too late.

[-] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Closing the gates after letting the fascists in.

They gave all of your data now as part of their use AI on your communication history to determine age and they just fed that to the government for flagging "suspicious activity" like people who advocate for 1st amendment flag burning I would assume or taking a stance that Patel's tax payer binge drinking with misogynist is fraud, waste, and abuse.

It wasn't just photo ID's that was fed to that horrible company.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 days ago

or "Discord Decides to Stay in Business".

[-] Flames5123@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

Can we at least recognize that the protests worked? If we’re gonna critique discord when it’s bad, we should at least celebrate when they listen to the protesting users.

[-] ooterness@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

They're still doubling down on age verification, they're just using a different sketchy company to do so.

[-] Flames5123@sh.itjust.works 0 points 4 days ago

But using k-id has been validated by third parties to NOT leave your device.

[-] deacon@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Do you really think we can count on that to persist?

We know tech companies lie if they can get away with it and the fashies are destroying all of the checks and balances that would prevent them getting away with it

[-] glitchy_nobody@leminal.space 1 points 4 days ago

And I have a bridge to sell you.

[-] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

They only changed providers for the same unforgivable mistake.

They still want your driver's license, to use fancy IRC.

[-] Flames5123@sh.itjust.works 0 points 4 days ago

[-] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago

I don't give a shit and neither should you.

[-] AngryMob@lemmy.one 1 points 4 days ago

They didn't listen at all. We don't want id verification. Period. Full stop.

Switching from terrible to potentially less terrible isn't listening.
