Zhou Enlai, born on this day in 1898, was a communist revolutionary, statesman, and military officer who served as the 1st Premier of the People's Republic of China from 1949 to 1976. "All diplomacy is a continuation of war by other means."

Zhou was educated in a missionary college in Tianjin before studying at a Japanese university. In Tianjin, he met his future wife, Deng Yingchao while participating in a radical political group known as the "Awakening Society". In 1920, Zhou moved to France, where he helped form the overseas branch of the Communist Party of China. He also lived in Britain and Germany before returning to China in 1924.

While working in the Political Department of the Whampoa Military Academy, Zhou was also made the secretary of the Communist Party of Guangdong-Guangxi, and served as the CPC representative with the rank of major-general.

After the Chinese Civil War broke out in 1927, Zhou served in the communist forces, helping establish and oversee a network of underground cells of communist resistance. Zhou played a leading role in the Long March of 1934-35, an arduous military retreat of communist forces over 8,000 miles.

Following the Zunyi Conference in 1935, Mao Zedong became Zhou's assistant. After the conclusion of the Long March, Mao officially took over Zhou Enlai's leading position in the CPC, while Zhou took a secondary position as vice-chairman. Both would hold their leadership positions until their deaths in 1976.

Zhou was a prominent participant in the 1955 Asian–African Conference, held in Indonesia. The conference produced a declaration in strongly in favor of peace, the abolition of nuclear arms, general arms reduction, and the principle of universal representation at the United Nations. Zhou was critical of American imperial aggression and stated "the population of Asia will never forget that the first atom bomb was exploded on Asian soil."

Zhou passed away from bladder cancer on January 8th, 1976, just nine months before Mao Zedong's death in September that year.

"Today the first unification of the Chinese people has emerged. The people themselves have become the masters of Chinese soil, and the rule of the reactionaries in China has been irrevocably overthrown."

Zhou Enlai, from "Chinese People Will not Tolerate Aggression" (October 1950)

Got permabanned from PieFed.social for saying the 1930s famine in the USSR wasn't deliberate, which is a common understanding even among bourgeois historians:

PJ whined to Rimu to get me banned for debunking PJ too hard

Every time I see a new Pokemon starter lineup I think they're very gubious if you know what I mean. They always feel like a very distilled and manufactured attempt to make something cute.

A friend was talking to me about radios, I had the thought "damn my memory sucks, I can't keep track of all these different model numbers and the details of their differences." I was thinking about AKs today and realized the conversation probably would have been the opposite talking about guns. It's funny and frustrating how much my memory impresses me on certain things, the brain is incredible but only functions to it's fullest if I can find a reason to care about the subject.

A friend was reading Marx in public and a real-life bebate pervert approached them asking why they are reading that.

They got to hear the whole tiananmenTankMan-holomor-butdoyoucondemhamas-spectacle in the span of an hour. This guy debated a stranger reading Marx for a whole hour unprompted.

Real life marketplace of ideas people exist, omg.

My chef has a weird brain and sometimes asks the strangest questions. I mentioned the school near me seems to be building a greenhouse cause he was talking about building one before the spring, he's really into gardening and I said I wasnt sure cause it wasnt finished but it had the look. He sarcastically said "as long as it isnt a homeless shelter or something." (This town has gone to absolute shit in regards to sheltering the homeless even more than before). I joked back something along the lines of 'they'd never build it that close to a school, that's too close to providing free education.' And he sincerely asked in response "So you're in favor of educating the homeless?" And like...that's a weird way off putting it but yes. I think everyone should have free access to education, it's not like I think people are necessarily homeless because of a lack thereof and while it's down the list from things like shelter and food, access to education would for sure help. I wasnt talking forced education, that's for much richer people. I explained essentially that and he replied that he had no idea why he asked that.

I was watching a comedy video where some guy fell and then “received autism” and it has him doing the stereotypical r-slur arm movements while making weird noises.

Do most people actually think being autistic means being mentally impaired?

[-] spectre@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yes

ableist IRL quote where someone just told me that

you know what those are for right? Autistic people. You know? r*****s.

Yes, they literally do believe autism is the BBC documentary showing you kids having meltdowns stress.

HELL YEAH I got my music server working properly!! Really the biggest annoyance was getting a functional Navidrome client app for my phone. I'd like to go FOSS but none of them were really doing downloads properly so I'm using Symfonium which appears wonderfully functional so far, even has UPnP for the old speakers my dad gave me. Now I've just got to download my music onto my phone and find a good way to rip new music easily!

I spoke for a while about the present economics conditions with some of the youngs today. I think I've made someone doubt their "human nature" idea that creeps up on defeatist ideas with examples from my background in Anthropology.

It's always a bit conflicting for me to speak with them of such topics, I have double their age and really don't want them to give credit to my ideas from age influence.

But some joined in too and we all concluded that it was a nice really and we should do that again! I still haven't finished all I had to do today but still - it was fine!

Every episode of Frieren i watch Im reminded of how incredibly wrong everyone who says "the show is fascist!" is

[-] Ildsaye@hexbear.net 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I think many say it because recognising the world needs pavlichenko scares them. Others say it because they know they would be shot by her.

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I mean like I get it that having a sentient race that explicitly exists to be and do evil and which explicitly, and according to the ideology of every character within the show, need to be exterminated isn't a great look and yes sure like I get it the author could just not write that stuff in but like

it's just so not "about" fighting demons? I like the demon fighting shit because I'm a slop loving piglet who just wants to see animated fight scenes of people zwee fighting around

but that's like 3% of the show and the rest of it is about autism, connecting with people, caring about others, cherishing the memories you share with the people you love, etc etc.

Like the last episode I watched was all about them trying to help a random dwarf find this legendary liquor

spoilers about the Boshaft episodewhich ends up being an incredibly dogshit brew that is so not worth dedicating your life to finding. Frieren already knew this because her previous party already found it decades ago, but her current companions want her to help the guy anyway because he's offering a lot of money. She was reluctant, knowing how finding it to be a disappointment might crush Fass, the dwarf, but she does it because her friends want her to. In the end, rather than be disappointed, he's amused, and they all happily share some of it together even though it tastes awful.

like it is literally nothing but a show about connections between people and how they change and affect us even decades after the passing of the people involved. How the fuck can that be fascist? It's not like it's some retvrn to tradition nostalgia shit

before that there was an episode where they go on a long journey through the mountains to find a hot spring

spoilers for the episodeAnd Frieren doesn't really want to go, but her friend Stark does, because he remembers his teacher (the dwarf warrior from Frieren's party) talking about the experience of finding it with her before, and he wanted to share this experience that his teacher had. And they get there and he finds out that it's only an ankle deep hot spring, hardly enough to have a foot bath, but they all sit and enjoy the scenery (even if it wasn't really worth such a journey)

i dunno, I like stuff like that, and like maybe I'm just a nerd but I get actually angry when it gets written off like it's fascist media >:(

You know how nazis flock to Oregon and Idaho?

What would y’all say is the closest thing there is to a leftist HQ in burgerland?

[-] tocopherol@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

NYC is probably the closest contender, serious people doing good work there though nowhere in the US really has a sufficiently organized left in the open, mostly underground for good reason. Portland (Oregon), New York City and Seattle were declared "anarchist jurisdictions" by Trump in 2020, I've known a lot of comrades from these places. A lot of nazis flock to the NW but there are maybe just as many leftists, partly as a response to all the nazis. The Bay Area, CA where the Black Panthers are from has a long history of left radicalism also.

[-] free_casc@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

Idaho had a much larger "incoming Nazi" problem. Oregon and Washington have more 2nd+ gen homegrown Nazis, but the amount of leftists and liberals moving to cities far outpaces them. Right wing people in these States usually wasn't to move to idaho, montane, Tennessee, or Florida. They're pretty comfortable in southern Oregon or east of the cascades, but the liberal cities still outsize them by far.

Further Stargate posting: Got to season 8, now I started switching back and forth to Atlantis every half season or so. I'm not quite deranged enough to go episode by episode like when it was originally airing so I'm doing every half season or so according to the following sequence from some nerd on r*ddit:

  • 01 - Stargate movie
  • 02 - Stargate SG-1, episodes 1.1 to 8.2
  • 03 - Stargate Atlantis, episodes 1.1 to 1.15
  • 04 - Stargate SG-1, episodes 8.3 to 8.20
  • 05 - Stargate Atlantis, episodes 1.16 to 2.1
  • 06 - Stargate SG-1, episodes 9.1 to 10.2
  • 07 - Stargate Atlantis, episodes 2.2 to 3.4
  • 08 - Stargate SG-1, episodes 10.3 to 10.12
  • 09 - Stargate Atlantis, episodes 3.5 to 3.19
  • 10 - Stargate SG-1, episodes 10.13 to 10.20
  • 11 - Stargate: The Ark of Truth
  • 12 - Stargate Atlantis, episodes 3.20 to 5.1
  • 13 - Stargate: Continuum
  • 14 - Stargate Atlantis, episodes 5.2 onwards.
  • 15 - Stargate Universe, All

Except I skipped the original movie and there is no way I'm watching that Battlestargate Universica shit again.

I'd live another ~20,000 years. I'd add a zero to the year that I die.

I'm old so I kind of made myself sad a little.

I made my vegan quesadillas too sexy and all my coworkers ate all of them before i could get one for lunch because i was too busy making arancini for Tuesday bawllin-sad

I'd be fine with this since i'm not vegan but the non vegan quesadillas are just cheese and bacon and hardly any of it and TOO SPICY wtf
