❗️US says lifting Iran oil sanctions could send crude to Asia in days

Removing sanctions on stranded Iranian oil would allow supplies to reach Asia within three to four days, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said on Friday.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday that the US may soon lift restrictions on Iranian oil stuck on tankers at sea, as Washington aims to ease rising prices caused by Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

"Within days, within three or four days, that oil will start to arrive at ports," Wright said in an interview on Fox Business Network's "Mornings with Maria" program.

Wright said the previously restricted oil would then be processed and enter the market over the next six weeks or so.

"I think that most of that oil will be absorbed in the next 30 to 45 days," he said.

Following the downing of the first US Air Force F-35A, it was revealed that it was shot down, presumably, by the Majid (AD-08) short-range air defense system. The successful attack on the F-35 calls into question the invulnerability of American and Israeli stealth fighters and may force the Iranian military to reconsider its tactics for strikes deep into Iranian territory.

The Majid is an Iranian short-range air defense system (SAM) designed to intercept low-flying targets such as cruise missiles, drones, and tactical aircraft. The system is characterized by exceptional mobility (usually mounted on the chassis of an Iveco Daily 4x4 SUV or similar light trucks) and a high degree of stealth.

Unlike traditional SAM systems, it does not use radar to guide missiles, making it virtually invisible to the radar warning systems (RWS) of aircraft like the F-35. The system is equipped with a high-resolution electro-optical system with a thermal imaging channel. It scans the sky for thermal contrast, such as hot engines or airframe friction.

The AD-08 missile is equipped with an uncooled infrared seeker (IR seeker), enabling a "fire and forget" approach.

❗️UAE arrests 109 people over 'misinformation' and filming strike sites amid Iranian drone/missile operations

Abu Dhabi Police have arrested 109 individuals of various nationalities for filming sites and sharing what authorities described as misleading content online during ongoing regional tensions, warning that such activity could stir public opinion and threaten security.

The crackdown follows earlier waves of arrests tied to posts about Iranian attacks and comes as the UAE, a host to US military bases and aligned with Washington and Israel, tightens control over information flows, urging the public to rely solely on official sources while expanding legal action against social media activity.

This unlocked a new potential US strategy for me. Someone below mentioned that maybe this was to push out one faction of the international bourgeoisie for another. What if it's not that but instead....

What if the realization is that the US built its post-WW2 wealth by being the only industrial economy untouched by the war. This meant that everyone who needed help rebuilding had to go through American physical industrial capacity. It was achieved through total war in Europe, that is to say the destruction of physical industrial capacity across the entire subcontinent.

So what if the idea with Iran is to actually achieve the exact same outcome without the need to fully destroy all the physical industrial capacity? What if the goal is for the US to be the only country who's energy logistics is left standing. It doesn't matter how many factories Europe has if they can't power them. With US energy reserves and access to oil and gas reserves across the entire Western hemisphere, the US could in theory be the only place with enough energy to handle the industrial needs of the North Atlantic alliance and their vassals and subjects.

I know that there are power issues in the USA, but I am also aware of a massive amount of capital that has recently been gathered to develop power projects across the country.

I know that Venezuelan crude is very costly to refine, but a higher cost doesn't matter as much if it means being the only country with a reliable energy platform.

Essentially I am proposing that the US may be engaging in what could be called a logical or economic deindustrialization, like what they did to Latin America over the last few decades, applied to as much of the world as possible, without needing a total war to destroy the physical industrial capacity.

This would be inline with what we speculated was true about the strategy during the Biden administration and the destruction of Nord Stream 2 - raising energy prices on European industry to make them more dependent on the US and applying sanction chains to punish anyone buying Russian energy.

Yes, there are lots of detailed problems with this including rare earths and energy diversity and refinery capacity and lots of other things.

[-] cfgaussian@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

It is already clear that they are de-industrializing Europe and siphoning Europe's industries to the US. That is not controversial or hypothetical, it is already happening. What is not clear is how this strategy is supposed to achieve that for China or for Russia. Russia will never run out of energy (not this century at least), and China's energy self-sufficiency is only going up, as a result of the green transition and nuclear development, not down. The result is not the most dangerous rivals of the US being de-industrialized, it is the US cannibalizing its own vassals to try and halt or slow down their own decline. Even for the middle powers like Brazil or India, it is not clear that the US is succeeding in seriously undermining their energy security. India will keep receiving oil from Russia for example no matter how much the US wrecks West Asia. The countries most dependent on Middle Eastern oil and gas are ironically the US's most loyal vassals.

[-] freagle@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 3 hours ago

Well, in a multi-polar world, the US could be content with just dominating half of the globe's industry. Or they could be laying the ground work to eventually destroy the East's energy infrastructure at a later date

[-] cfgaussian@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 3 hours ago

It's not that i don't think the intention isn't there, but they just don't have the means. Short of launching nuclear WWIII at least. There is a vast chasm between wishing something would happen and being able to make it happen.

🇨🇭🇺🇸 Switzerland has suspended all new arms exports to the U.S. over the war in Iran, invoking its neutrality and the War Material Act.

Existing licenses and other exports are being reviewed by a government-appointed expert group.

In practice, the move targets Washington—Israel and Iran have not received approvals for years. No new licenses have been issued since U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran began on February 28.

⭕️ Hezbollah announced 39 operations against Israeli forces and sites on 19 March

Border clashes

Hezbollah reported intense engagements with Israeli forces attempting to advance around Taybeh and Deir Siryan, particularly in the Bidar al-Faq‘ani area, where multiple Merkava tanks were targeted and destroyed with guided missiles, raising the total to at least six tanks. An ambush on advancing Israeli forces led to additional tank losses and forced troops to retreat under helicopter evacuation, which was itself targeted with rocket and artillery fire. Further strikes targeted Israeli troop and vehicle concentrations in Maroun al-Ras, Khiam, Odaisseh, Aitaroun, Mays al-Jabal outskirts, and multiple positions including Misgav Am, Manara position, and Talat al-Khazzan, using rockets, artillery shells, and guided missiles. Hezbollah also reported detonating explosive devices against a D9 bulldozer in Taybeh and targeting troops in Aitaroun.

Drone attacks

Hezbollah launched suicide drone swarms targeting Israeli troop concentrations and positions, including Nimr al-Jamal opposite Alma al-Shaab and areas north of Kfar Yuval, striking gatherings of soldiers and vehicles.

Rocket strikes

Hezbollah carried out repeated rocket barrages against Israeli settlements across northern occupied Palestine, including Kiryat Shmona (at least seven times), Manara, Shtoula, Margaliot, Malikiya, and Even Menachem, alongside strikes on troop concentrations near Hula and Maroun al-Ras, as well as continued bombardment of frontline positions.

Strategic military targets

Hezbollah announced strikes on deeper Israeli military infrastructure, including the Tefen base east of Acre, Yodfat military industries company east of Haifa, and the Hermon site, in addition to sustained attacks on frontline military positions such as Misgav Am and Adather (Jabal Adir), using rocket salvos, artillery fire, and coordinated strike patterns.

Usually, a US expeditionary group consists of at least three ships. In the new group, the USS Boxer (LHD-4) serves as the core. It carries F-35B Lightning II fighters, MV-22B Osprey tiltrotors (for possible rapid deployment of troops deep into Iran), and AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters.

Inside it is a huge docking chamber (a flooding compartment), from which LCAC air-cushion landing craft can exit. The second ship is the USS Portland (LPD-27). This is an amphibious assault ship. It transports tanks, armored vehicles, and heavy equipment of the 11th Expeditionary Corps. The third ship is the USS Comstock (LSD-45). It can carry up to 4 LCAC air-cushion landing craft. If there's a need to quickly unload heavy artillery or armored vehicles on the unarmed coast of Iran, this is a task for the "Comstock".

Thus, it can be assumed that if something happens to the USS Boxer, the first-tier forces providing the strike and further cover for the landing force will be destroyed. Technically, a landing is possible in such conditions, but the risk of losing the entire landing force will be significantly higher.

John Mearsheimer on what the Strait of Hormuz closure actually means:

"It's not only oil. One third of the world's fertilizer comes through the Strait of Hormuz. This is going to create major league inflation, which is going to slow down growth and result in the deaths of many people all around the world."

Everyone is watching the oil price. Almost nobody is talking about fertilizer.

One third of global fertilizer supply moves through a strait that has been closed for three weeks. The food shock from this war hasn't hit yet.

Also, this must be a golden opportunity for Russia as they could really help out Europe with this

[-] cfgaussian@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

It seems to me like the current European leadership is way too Russophobic to ask the Russians for help. And who says Russia is interested anymore in helping Europe? I wouldn't discount the possibility that, even if Europe comes begging, the Russians will just tell them: that ship has sailed. Their oil and gas flows have been redirected to China, and that's not the kind of thing that can just turn on a dime. They're building serious infrastructure that will lock them in for decades.

[-] dazaroo@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 5 hours ago

"Europeans will stand in defiance to Russia for our sovereignty, no matter the price". -Macron 2027 while old people die off in their hundreds because they can't afford gas

[-] Marat@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 5 hours ago

It'd be odd that Russia would reject an opportunity to gain some leverage over Europe.

I mean, that's the entire reason the US/Ukraine blew up their pipeline in the Baltic.

While the Europeans are definitely Russophobic, there's obviously enough of them who either don't care or are fair weather players. Especially depending on who gets elected next.

[-] cfgaussian@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 5 hours ago

I have never understood the argument that Russia somehow has leverage over Europe by providing us with gas. Russia has never once broken or even threatened to break its contracts for political gain. What leverage did Russia have before? Europe was the party that unilaterally chose to terminate the contract and stop receiving Russian gas. The Russians never turned it off even when the Europeans were supplying Ukraine with weapons to kill Russians and commit terrorist attacks inside Russia.

And yes, there are a few leaders in Europe who are more on the pragmatic/opportunistic side, but at the moment the hard-line Russophobes are very dominant. They have gotten their way nearly every time so far. The only exception being the recent rebellion over the theft of Russia's reserves. We will see if the situation becomes desperate enough that more cracks start to show, but so far Europe has shown itself repeatedly to be willing to destroy itself for the sake of its ideological crusade against Russia.

[-] Marat@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 3 hours ago

The conversation was predicated on the idea that Europe was going to ask Russia for energy. If they're not then Russia obviously holds no leverage. But if Europe does push to the point that they start asking for Russian gas again, then obviously Russia would be in the position to possibly start making demands again.
