I'm guessing this actually had less to do with his staffers trying to avoid showing him their shortcomings, and more likely that he actually told them to brief him on the war like this. He is a chronically callous and uncurious person. He wants to watch the snuff reels. He doesn't care who is suffering.
I can imagine military advisors told him about things like supply lines and logistics, but then he was clearly zoning out or even saying "boring!"

If I was one of trump's advisors/handlers I would hire a small team of nazis to AI generate news per my requirements. And hire 1-2 to make sure his phone/vpn/wifi would redirect queries as needed to my version of the internet. Same as normal internet but with certain things replaced.
