This doesn't surprise me in the least. I have been saying for a couple of years now that animals are gaining sentience. Earlier this week I read another article about about primates making weapons.
Most animals are sentient. Sapience is likely what you mean.
Also, tools have been a thing for a while in primates and weapons are just tools of warfare

Since we're animals, animals have been sentient as long as we've been. But not likely way before that as well.
