My rule of thumb is that if doing [thing which people do to animals] would be considered an atrocity if done to humans, we should probably not do that. But in this case, I think the alternative (domesticated pet animals becoming pregnant and having their babies kidnapped to be sold/given away/potentially euthanised if nobody adopts them) is even worse.
I’m in the same boat as you, where I don’t really have an opinion yet and am interested in what everybody here thinks. I definitely see the utilitarian argument of “rampant breeding of non-native cats destroys native ecosystems so de-sexing is okay” but it makes me uncomfy to agree with utilitarians and my gut feeling is “it’s wrong to unconsentually operate on anyone, particularly if it’s not for their own benefit”.
