Needed? to stay in its lane, but a lot of people and governments got grifted into dumping millions into it, and it’s mostly useless for any sort of practical applications, so now that garbage is in everything, being peddled as the one all fix all, when at its current best it’s not even a reliable text processor.

If they want to develop it, I don’t have a problem with that, but everything needs to be rolled back like 2 years back, before all this bullshit started and continue from there. Too much shit has been compromised and compromised on since then.

Weirdly enough, I think the title kinda got it right in that people hate the AI industry but the article then generalizes it, claiming people hate the tech itself. Some people definitely do but pretty much everyone has a critical view on the industry and the tech giants behind it.

I agree with you, but at the same time, AI kinda amplify every bad aspect of our society. It show how much employers want to get rid of their employees to the point of willing to replace them with an experimental technology. It exacerbate climate change with resource hungry data centers. It accelerate enshitification. It show how messed up the whole investment thing is (AI companies investing into each other). Government want to use it to increase their surveillance of us. It make armies salivate at the idea of having an army of relentless robot.

When something is 98% terrible but has some costly uses (environment, consolidation of power through info gathering, literal genocide, etc.) the nuance seems like a straw grasp or a lack of info.

Open vs closed AI is the most important “fight” right now, as it would completely collapse the kind of future regime people like Altman are trying to jawbone into reality.

It’s why they never shut up about their AI, yet you never hear any of these tech bros discuss Deepseek or Mistral or anything that can be run locally other than in passing. To speak it is to acknowledge that OpenAI and such don’t have anything special; “AI” as they’re developing is just a dumb commodity, that’s more or less topped out in intelligence but will get exponentially cheaper.

And they can’t make any money off that. If it’s all just a sea of open weights that cost virtually nothing to inference, where’s the profit?
