Hey guys. Im trying to fully move to lemmy.
Unfortunately many subreddits I was using - are not represented on lemmy. So I figured I would just sync content from reddit for those communities - so I scripted auto-reposter of top most popular reddit posts to lemmy.

but. im running into issues.

Lemmy communities that sometimes 0 content with last content sometimes posted 2 years ago - they ban me for "spam" when I auto post content even if their lemmy communities literally have no content...

This community just banned me, last post in that community was 2 years ago:
https://lemmy.ml/c/buildapcsales

What are they even moderating?
I cannot make this shit up.

Anyways - I would rather do my own server then deal with mods worse than on reddit that actually allows that.

Starting lemmy server - which hardware to get? Dedi? ram? cpu?
What does lemmy.world uses? Thank you.

As for the auto sync, no one here wants that. There have been entire instances dedicated to that, they were highly defederated.

Im sure many people want that. I dont want empty communities - thats why lemmy is stuck in tiny userbase without any growth.
explain it to me - what purpose is a community with last post 2 years ago? Why does it even exist if noone uses it?

[-] nocturne@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

A community full of bot posted reddit content is still, for all intents and purposes, an empty community.

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

and I respectfully disagree.
95% of people are commenters and not post creators.

when Im as a commenter come to community without posts - I leave. itsded. there is nothing for me to do .
when im as a commenter come to community with reddit reposts - I immediately see content and I can comment, the world is my oyster.

I tried setting up a bot to auto-post from an rss feed for sports stuff a few years back, and it made a lot of people very unhappy and got my bot banned pretty quick. Nocturne is right— there honestly just isn’t demand for bot-posted content; people would rather nothing than automated posting 🤷‍♂️

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -2 points 2 weeks ago

im sorry - but im dead set on leaving reddit. if they want to ban me -its their call, I will create my own instance - thats the topic here

[-] CombatWombat@feddit.online 1 points 2 weeks ago

I definitely think your own instance is the right move here, and you can post whatever you want to your own instance. I don't want you to hear me saying "you shouldn't do this," but instead hear me saying "please don't be offended when you find your efforts are not well received."

[-] Krusty@quokk.au 2 points 2 weeks ago

If I wanted to see Reddit content then I would go to Reddit.

This is a shit idea, IMO. I actively block such content.

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -2 points 2 weeks ago

but I cannot use reddit without ads - they started blocking on mobile.

at least on lemmy - we could see all reddit content without reddit ads

[-] CallMeAl@piefed.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

Maybe invest some time in learning the culture of a community here before force injecting a reddit spam feed into it?

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

https://lemmy.ml/c/buildapcsales

why even bother running a community?
2 years with no posts - who is this for?

[-] Crystalbound@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Its a user volume issue. Reality is, Lemmy just isnt at scale like Reddit in users. Comment, post, vote - make it active. Give people a reason to stick around and engage.

But I'd agree i dont want a bot just funneling Reddit to Lemmy. Im here, rather than Reddit, by intent

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -2 points 2 weeks ago

its a chicken and the egg issue - no content no users. give them at least content and then users will come

[-] Nemo@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 weeks ago

I'm not here for content. I'm here for interaction. Repost bots are all noise no signal from that perspective. Similarly a thousand users who lurk are less important to me than a single user who remembers me across threads (probably as "that guy who doesn't believe in [linear time | disbanding the Electoral Collage | Ohio being part of the Midwest | the superiority of the metric system]").

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -1 points 2 weeks ago

I’m not here for content. I’m here for interaction.

oh my lord. people - if there is no content, there is not going to be people to interact with. its that simple
chicken and the egg - solve the egg problem and you will get the chicken.

[-] Nemo@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 weeks ago

You keep asserting this in the face of multiple people telling you otherwise. That doesn't mean you're wrong — but it certainly doesn't mean you're right, either.

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -1 points 2 weeks ago

im not alone, many people say they are lemmy native, but just have separate accounts and use reddit. thats ok.

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

look - I want to talk to humans as well.
but if there is no content - then what are you even talking about .

95% of reddit users dont post content, they just browse existing content. Im sure similar distribution at lemmy.

At lemmy - if there is no content to even browse - people will go back to reddit.
I 100% believe for 90% of communities here - " bot just funneling Reddit to Lemmy" is a 1000% improvement over no content at all.
at least people can then just shitpost in comments instead of just going back to reddit.

[-] Humanius@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

There are more options than either automatically funneling Reddit posts to Lemmy, or not posting at all.

Have you even considered manually contributing your own posts and insights? I would much rather engage on a post posted with intent behind it, rather than a Reddit post copied to Lemmy by a bot.

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -1 points 2 weeks ago

Have you even considered manually contributing your own posts and insights?

I dont want to contribute to absolutely empty community

[-] Crystalbound@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I meam a bot funneling Reddit is just gonna make me leave, but go wild

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -3 points 2 weeks ago

hey thats your opinion and you are entitled to it.

me - I will choose reddit reposts on lemmy, while using good lemmy apps without ads over empty lemmy community.

at least there is a build out chance

[-] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

Such an awful idea. Again, reddit got big because people posted, not because a bot grabbed crap from another discussion site.

So simply post things.

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -2 points 2 weeks ago

So simply post things.

not working. look lemmy is 5+ years old. its pretty stagnant. we need explosive growth for people to start leaving reddit.

[-] Crystalbound@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, but it first has to be more user accessible. Its not as user friendly as a site like Reddit to just log in and get going.

Bots just posting Reddit are not what the site needs. If people here wanted Reddit, theyd be on Reddit. Honestly super simple to understand that

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -2 points 2 weeks ago

. If people here wanted Reddit, theyd be on Reddit.

we are tired of playing cat and mouse with reddit.
I want reddit content , just not on reddit

its that simple - not everyone is like you

[-] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

Do you remember reddit at 5? Its not that much different. Why would you want to bring all the garbage that is reddit here?

Just post, generate a community. Thats how it works.

You can have your own site that is just a mirror of reddit, but that effectively empty users and/or garbage posts. People leave reddit beacuse it sucks, and now you want to jump straight to making lemmy suck.

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -2 points 2 weeks ago

all the garbage that is reddit her

just use filtering. just auto repost most upvoted content.

Just post, generate a community. Thats how it works.
I dont have the amount of time to redo all that work that people that post to https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/ already done. this is absolutely pointless menial work nobody wants to do

[-] felsiq@piefed.zip 0 points 2 weeks ago

You may want to look into the lemmit.online instance, it mirrors reddit content here and may already mirror the comms you’re looking for. Like another commenter said tho, many people have defederated or blocked it because a lot of us use the fediverse rather than reddit for a reason - so don’t be too surprised if you get a similar response.

I’m also not a fan of just mirroring reddit, but BAPC sales is one of the very few types of subreddit I can see being useful to mirror since it basically exists to be an rss feed and comments don’t provide as much value as usual. If you focus on comms like that maybe your instance would be less likely to be blocked?

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -2 points 2 weeks ago

the plan is - siphon reddit content until lemmy community is big enough where it does not need that.

BAPC sales is one of the very few types of subreddit I can see being useful to mirror since it basically exists to be an rss feed and comments don’t provide as much value as usual.

rigggghhhttt!??!!?? their slogal is literally stolen from subreddit. wth

[-] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

Why don't you use post on Lemmy? Reddit didn't have a lot of users either it started naturally.

Maybe post the links on reddit back to your instance on Lemmy and start getting engagement.

Reddit is bot and shit head garbage now. Nobody wants the majority of reddit here.

[-] Grumpus_Maximus@thelemmy.club -1 points 2 weeks ago

look - its ok. we dont need to argue. lets agree to disagree.
I will create my own instance

[-] scytale@piefed.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

the plan is - siphon reddit content until lemmy community is big enough where it does not need that.

People have attempted this before. Like others have said, it didn’t really go well and a lot of people blocked those communities or have entire instances defederate from them. I think it was lemmynsfw (RIP) that thrived with mirrored content because, well, porn.

I’m still subscribed to communities that post via rss bots, but it’s for specific topics (i.e. tech, hackernews), not general content.

But hey, the beauty of the fediverse is you can do whatever you want on your own instance, so feel free to do it. Don’t be suprised though if not a lot of instances will choose to federate with you.
