ok but Japan is also evil. Like insanely evil. As early as the 2000s, families of Unit 731 victims were demanding they be held accountable for the war crimes and they dismissed the lawsuits. Europe is also insanely evil and actively protects Israel.

Thiago Ávila and the Flotilha were kidnapped by Israel, when they were by the Greek coast, meaning EU waters. So they basically granted Israel right to do whatever it wants in EU territory.

JRA was lit though.

I hope this is a sign that the US's soft power influence is truly in the shitter and not going to make a comeback.

What's sad is Americans in America arent looking at Americans with disgust.

Everyone just wants to blame the politicians and pretend they haven't been cultivating this culture through consumerism and groomed tradition. Fuck trump, but I'm not going claim he's to blame. American culture made trump.

[-] amemorablename@lemmygrad.ml 25 points 3 weeks ago

and groomed tradition

In other words, settler colonialism which then developed into imperialism (and a lot of systemic racism to go with it). But yeah, there is a certain amount of, "Trump isn't what we are" kind of reaction to things. You are right though and it's similar to Hitler that way, in that Hitler had white colonialism going "gasp, how could anyone ever do that, what an anomaly" when it was what they'd been doing for hundreds of years. As Aimé Césaire puts it in Discourse on Colonialism:

Yes, it would be worthwhile to study clinically, in detail, the steps taken by Hitler and Hitlerism and to reveal to the very distinguished, very humanistic, very Christian bourgeois of the twentieth century that without his being aware of it, he has a Hitler inside him, that Hitler inhabits him, that Hitler is his demon, that if he rails against him, he is being inconsistent and that, in the end, what he cannot forgive Hitler for is not the crime in itself, the crime against man, it is not the humiliation of man as such, it is the crime against the white man, the humiliation of the white man, and the fact that he applied to Europe colonialist procedures which until then had been reserved exclusively for the Arabs of Algeria, the “coolies” of India, and the “[slur for black people, not going to quote it here]” of Africa.

It's not exactly the same, but there's a similarity in how people don't want to face up to the fact that the mask off version of them is still them. That liberalism is not a morally upstanding position and until they fundamentally reject imperialism and colonialism, all they are doing is pretending to care about liberation. Liberty and liberation are not the same. Liberalism will vie for the first one as abstract individual liberties but is incapable of liberation because system level liberation means the end of liberalism and the creation of socialism and then communism. Liberalism wants to have its cake and eat it too: maintain an elitist hierarchy while also trickling down some vague "freedoms". Liberation, on the other hand, demands the end of elitist hierarchies through collective ownership of power (the means of production and distribution) and through dramatic transformation of society over time to uplift people materially and of mind; lift people out of poverty, turn worker and intellectual stratification into worker-intellectual combined in each person, and so on.

You mean US citizens in the US.

People from other countries of America often call US citizens "gringos" or "Yankees" with disgust.

[-] davel@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 3 weeks ago

Now that I think about it, gringo & Yankee are a lot less clunky-sounding than Statesian or USian.

[-] amemorablename@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 3 weeks ago

I may have to adopt using Yankee over USian. I picked up the second one a while ago on account of the distinction about who all is actually "American", but USian does feel pretty clunky.

i prefer ameriKKKan for this reason. usamerican if i must. at least the maoists are good for naming things.

[-] Pissed@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 weeks ago

There are Maoists?

[-] Bronstein_Tardigrade@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 3 weeks ago

USans are not the same as other Americans.

[-] burlemarx@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 3 weeks ago

"Gringos" is a slang for foreigners, not something exclusive for Americans. I would be a gringo in Chile even though I'm from Brazil.

[-] bilb@lemmy.ml 9 points 3 weeks ago

Well, we do hate each other here. Its pretty crazy.

Or maybe I'm mostly just projecting?

[-] knfrmity@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah but that comes out of artficial political polarization and culture wars, not disgust with the class nature of the state and its imperialist project.

[-] davel@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 3 weeks ago

We hate each other and then rally around the flag to hate our designated enemies.

No one irl gets it when I say this. Glad to find like-minded people on communist-reddit

[-] davel@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 3 weeks ago

Hexbear even has an emoji for it.

[-] rainpizza@lemmygrad.ml 22 points 3 weeks ago

It is a big sign of what you mentioned and it is also one more evidence that people are out there agitating through mass line orgs against US imperialism.

Hopefully, this trend will keep getting stronger now that the ugliness of the US empire is transparent for everyone to see.

I was in Japan last year. We went to a very secluded but still pretty well known village and stayed at a guest house. On our last day 2 American couples came, the silence which was present and the calm and relaxing environment immediately disappeared. They were loud, invasive and frankly just dumb. One of them started talking to me and when I said I was from a former Yugoslavian country he IMMEDIATELY said "oh from the dictatorship land, glad we freed you guys, your welcome" I'm dead serious.

I know not all Americans are like this, but 9/10 times my experience is just plain bad.

[-] agentant@hexbear.net 17 points 3 weeks ago

even like 15+ years ago I remember common travel advice for people from the u.s. was "pretend to be canadian"

[-] davel@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 3 weeks ago

I think this has been a thing since at least the late 1970s, perhaps starting during the Vietnam war. I remember hearing it in the ’80s.

[-] p0ntyp00l@lemmygrad.ml 29 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Try being less disgusting, then.

[-] ArcticFoxSmiles@lemmygrad.ml 26 points 3 weeks ago

I view Americans with disgust and I am American.

[-] SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml 25 points 3 weeks ago

US 👉👈 EU and Japan

Spider-man meme.

[-] burlemarx@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 3 weeks ago

Exactly, they all suck.

[-] into_highest_invite@lemmygrad.ml 19 points 3 weeks ago

wondering when americans will realize they're the same as israelis, with trump as their netanyahu. of course, a lot of amerikkkans also don't believe there's anything wrong with israel beyond netanyahu.

[-] agentant@hexbear.net 19 points 3 weeks ago

I'm in Russia right now and every single time I say I'm from Nazi Germany, people look at me with disdain, and disgust, and I have to explain myself every fucking time. I've been to Yugoslavia, the same fucking thing applies. It is, embarrassing at this point. It's just disgusting and embarrassing and I have no fucking words.

[-] GiorgioPerlasca@lemmy.ml 17 points 3 weeks ago

Russians, Belarus, Iraqis, Afghans, Syrians, Serbians: "First time?"
