It's not exactly the same, but there's a similarity in how people don't want to face up to the fact that the mask off version of them is still them. That liberalism is not a morally upstanding position and until they fundamentally reject imperialism and colonialism, all they are doing is pretending to care about liberation. Liberty and liberation are not the same. Liberalism will vie for the first one as abstract individual liberties but is incapable of liberation because system level liberation means the end of liberalism and the creation of socialism and then communism. Liberalism wants to have its cake and eat it too: maintain an elitist hierarchy while also trickling down some vague "freedoms". Liberation, on the other hand, demands the end of elitist hierarchies through collective ownership of power (the means of production and distribution) and through dramatic transformation of society over time to uplift people materially and of mind; lift people out of poverty, turn worker and intellectual stratification into worker-intellectual combined in each person, and so on.

I was in Japan last year. We went to a very secluded but still pretty well known village and stayed at a guest house. On our last day 2 American couples came, the silence which was present and the calm and relaxing environment immediately disappeared. They were loud, invasive and frankly just dumb. One of them started talking to me and when I said I was from a former Yugoslavian country he IMMEDIATELY said "oh from the dictatorship land, glad we freed you guys, your welcome" I'm dead serious.
I know not all Americans are like this, but 9/10 times my experience is just plain bad.
