AMD claims that the new Ryzen 9 7945X3D with a whopping 144MB cache is the fastest mobile gaming processor on the planet, and that it's more than 15 percent faster than the Ryzen 9 7945HX on average. It has 16 cores, 32 threads, up to 5.4 Ghz boost speeds and 55W+ TDP. The CPU is built on the Zen 4 architecture.

it's funny how tech-forward "3D V" sounds and it really just means "we stuck more cache on top."

I heard you like cache, so I put some cache on your cache.

[-] symcal@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

If that means I can get consistent crazy performance on a 55W laptop chip then I don't see a problem. Once we hit the limit of Moore's law I suspect we will see many clever innovations and I personally can't wait.

when we gonna break the 1gb cherry? 🍒

Extra cache, so much room for more activities!

The factory must grow

Can't wait to read the Userbenchmark review telling me why this chip is actually garbage and how only idiots buy AMD.

"When using all 16 cores at a TDP of 5 watts, it is actually a lot slower then the core i3-1969UwU, making it pretty useless for battery operation. Consider buying an intel CPU.

I'm an idiot that's only ever had problems with Intel. Weirdly, same with AMD/ATI graphics. Only AMD CPU/APUs and GeForce GPUs for this idiot, here.

Ryzen 9 7945X3D

I don't know why this name is so funny to me. It just seems so much more ridiculous than an evenly named Ryzen 9 79500X3D. Like what, were getting 45 more units worth of a Ryzen 9 7900X3D, but not quite enough units for a Ryzen 9 7982X3D?

[-] Contramuffin@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

It's because the 7900 and 7950 are using an "old" naming scheme and the 7945 is using a new naming scheme.

  • 7 = released in 2023
  • 9 = Ryzen 9
  • 4 = Zen 4
  • 5 = mobile/APU

One of the side effects of this is that bigger number no longer necessarily means better, especially if you're comparing between architectures

[-] Varixable@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks for the explanation! That makes a lot more sense than what I assumed was an arbitrary number assignment.

[-] notepass@feddit.de 13 points 1 year ago

This is absolutely ridiculous. Looking at what we get out of mobile CPUs today, when I have a laptop with an i7-7700HQ from 2017 that has.... 4 cores/8 threads and is turboing to somewhere in the mid 3GhZ range. With a 45W TDP.

The last 5 years have been such a turbo charging for CPUs

Intel without competition is extremely profitable.

[-] blackluster117@possumpat.io 12 points 1 year ago

Jesus Christ, this thing is unreal. It's like reading the headlines for the Soviet Superman.

[-] Fizz@lemmy.nz 11 points 1 year ago

That mobile chip seems better than my ryzen 5600x lol

[-] Hobovision@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Probably way better and way more expensive.
