AC in the server room broke. Told my boss we needed to rent or buy a spot cooler.

Nope, let's just get a couple coolers of ice.

Dude, do you know why that AC unit is rated for 1.5 tons of cooling?

A cooler isn't going to do anything.

"hello, I'd like to get half a ton of dry ice delivered. No, we don't have a working ventilation system, why do you ask?"

[-] schmidtster@lemmy.world 26 points 1 year ago

You would just need 1.5 tons of ice every 24 hours NBD.

[-] linearchaos@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

it we could just install some kind of conveyor, and a bin with a drain....

Or get a $500 ac unit that plugs into the wall and vents into the hall...

[-] schmidtster@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

At least there will be lots of ice for the bevies you’ll need.

[-] Heggico@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

As a temporary measure, of course!

[-] Ageroth@reddthat.com 8 points 1 year ago

Nothing more permanent than a temporary fix that works

[-] theluckyone@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I'd prefer venting it into the manager's office.

Just come up with a plan that involves 100 ice makers

[-] Poggervania@kbin.social 14 points 1 year ago

just put the ice directly on the motherboard, ez pz cooling

I think this is a common "trick" to help heat your home if the power goes out. Putting a pot over 4 tea candles doesn't change how much heat it produces. But it does slow down the hot air path, so instead of going straight to the ceiling it bounces around at lower heights. And you get a little bit of radiant heat from the pot, but see laws of physics. It's more about the distribution of the heat.

[-] satanmat@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

They… you know they keep posting that you can heat a room, doing this… a tea candle doesn’t put out that kinda heat…. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[-] schmidtster@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

Isn’t it just so the heat stays in a smaller area? Radiant heat acts differently as well.

[-] MalachaiConstant@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

They way I've heard this explained is it isn't going to keep you comfortable but it might help keep you from freezing to death in an emergency

[-] Zron@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Doesn’t matter. A candle puts out about 80 btu. 4 candles is about 320 btu.

For comparison, an average human puts out 350 btu by just existing.

So this will warm up a room about as much as having another person sit in there with you.

You also now have the added risk of having a bunch of open flames balanced on pots in your room.

Don’t do this, buy a space blanket for 5 dollars and keep it in in your nightstand if you’re that worried about freezing to death in your home.

[-] schmidtster@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

So 3 people huddling for warmth instead of 2. That’s a better situation than before, and if you have a space blanket, even better. It’s still 3 people instead of 2, so better overall situation for everyone.

Sometimes it’s the last percent that means survival just so you are aware.

[-] Zron@lemmy.world -2 points 1 year ago

Until all 3 of you die because you accidentally started an uncontrolled fire while you’re already in an emergency.

2 people and 2 space blankets have just as good odds as surviving the cold than 2 people and some candles. Without needing to worry about fire.

A candle is going to heat up the area around it and dissipate that heat. The blanket will simply keep that 350 btu that you produce every hour much closer to your body, and stop you from freezing to death.

[-] AdlachGyfiawn@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

How irresponsible are you that starting an uncontrolled fire with a tea candle is a risk?

[-] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Blankets are highly underrated. Gloves are good too. Reusable, zero carbon emissions after you get them home other than the occasional wash. No carbon or unburned wax buildup on the walls or ceiling. Blankets don't steal oxygen or create a cold draft by sucking up air from under the door. Sweaters are good too.

[-] schmidtster@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

We just established that more heat is better and now you want to say making the fire larger is bad…?

Come on it’s a tea candle stomp it out with your foot of the flame falls over… wait it can’t fall over since it’s height is 1/3 it’s width…. You would literally have to throw it for it to fall over lmfao.

[-] mcqtom@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

Oh, I thought they were using the candles to emulate sunlight and were going to grow a plant upside-down...

[-] emeralddawn45@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 1 year ago

If you wanna grow upside down plants just use a mirror duh.

[-] IndefiniteBen@leminal.space 10 points 1 year ago

you know they keep posting that you can heat a room, doing this…

No. Who is they and where are they posting it? I've never seen this before.
