Due to American cluster bombing campaigns advised by Kissinger during the Vietnam War to damage supply lines, over 2 million tonnes of ordinance were dropped on Laos over about a decade, averaging a planeload of bombs every 8 minutes. Laos is thus the most bombed country on the planet up to this point. 80 million bombs failed to explode - the cleanup operation is expected to take centuries, and 25,000 people have been killed and injured by bombs in the last 50 years. About 50 people are killed or injured every year to this day.

After the United States withdrew from Laos, the Pathet Lao took power and abolished the monarchy. Kaysone Phomvihane became a dominant figure in Laotian politics, keeping the course on Marxism-Leninism and implementing the first Five Year Plan in 1981. The second Five Year Plan in 1986 was modelled on Lenin's NEP, and this doubled rice production and significantly increased sugar production. After the fall of the USSR, Laos allowed a small capitalist class to exist, with similar control over them as in China. Laos maintains a 48-hour work week with paid sick leave, vacation time, and maternity leave, and workers are well-represented in trade unions. They faired relatively well during coronavirus from a social standpoint due to quick and efficient action to lock down the country, experiencing ~750 deaths out of a population of over 7 million.

There is hope even after utter destruction by genocidal oppressors.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

Brazil is currently trying to establish mediation between both countries to avoid an armed conflict between Venezuela and Guyana.

The Brazilian Army mobilized towards the border of both countries anticipating a possible Venezuelan invasion.

On 30 November, Brazilian Minister of Defense José Múcio announced that the Brazilian Army would send 60 troops to Pacaraima to reinforce security at the border crossing with Venezuela, seeking to impede a potential Venezuelan crossing into Guyana from Brazilian territory.

On 5 December, the Brazilian Army mobilized 20 Iveco LMV vehicles to join the newly activated 18th Mechanized Cavalry Regiment based in Boa Vista, being expected to arrive in early January.

The regiment, originally planned to be activated in 2026, was created from the preexisting 12th Mechanized Cavalry Squadron on 29 November. An additional 600 soldiers will be added to the newly created 18th Cavalry Regiment, an armored task force composed of 28 armored vehicles was assembled: 6 VBTP-MR Guarani, 6 EE-9 Cascavel and 16 Iveco LMV.

Posting has really slowed down broadly. I'm doing my part (after semester, I do more things, some even involved with politics). Also spending way less time on public transport (peak posting time, other than classes for topics you already know).

We've gone from "There are weeks where decades happen" to "There are months where decades happen" territory as we wait for the attrition wars (in both Ukraine and Palestine) to unfurl to their ends, or for major escalations to occur. Only natural that posting has declined back to regular levels, so don't feel terribly obligated about it if you should be doing other things.

Venezuela and Guyana open "channels of communication" amid extension over territorial dispute

This contact comes after a consultative referendum held on Sunday in Venezuela

The foreign ministers of Venezuela, Yván Gil, and Guyana, Hugh Todd, agreed on Wednesday (6) to maintain "channels of communication" amid escalating tensions over the Essequibo, an oil-rich territory that is the subject of a centuries-old dispute between the neighbors, the Venezuelan government announced in a statement.

"At the request of the Guyanese side, Minister Hugh Todd had a telephone conversation with Minister Yván Gil to discuss the territorial dispute," he said.

This contact comes after a consultative referendum held on Sunday in Venezuela, in which more than 95% of the participants supported the creation of a Venezuelan province in Essequibo and the granting of citizenship to 125,000 inhabitants of the region, administered by Georgetown.

"The Venezuelan side took the opportunity to inform the Guyanese government of the overwhelming turnout in the popular consultation, generating an unappealable mandate" and "expressed the need to stop the actions that have aggravated the controversy," he added.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced on Tuesday that the Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA will have licenses to explore for oil, gas and minerals in this 160,000 km² region and created a new military zone around 100 km from the border.

If there was an invasion of Guyana Essequiba, would it be similar to when Russia occupied Crimea? Pretty much little resistance.

Truck blockade continues
Polish drivers protest at Ukrainian border crossings against price dumping and special rights. EU demands “solidarity” with Kyiv

Some highlights:

After a month, the truck blockades on the Polish-Ukrainian border continue unabated. As the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita reported on Tuesday, 5,000 vehicles are now stuck in traffic jams up to 30 kilometers long at the Polish-Ukrainian crossings. The conditions for the blocked Ukrainian drivers are tough: apart from a few mobile toilet blocks, the Polish authorities have done little to make the wait bearable. Buying food in the sparsely populated border region often involves hours of walking. At some point, the tanks from which the cabins can be heated are also empty. Two Ukrainian drivers have since died in the queues.

The protesting Polish truck drivers are calling on the EU to reintroduce the maximum limits for Ukrainian trucks in the Schengen area, which are valid until 2022. They were lifted after the start of the war as an act of solidarity with Kiev. Since then, firstly, the number of Ukrainian trucks entering the Schengen area has increased from 160,000 to 800,000 annually, and secondly, the share of Ukrainian freight forwarders in cross-border traffic has grown significantly. Polish haulage companies are complaining that their market share of transport journeys between the two countries has fallen from 35 to ten percent, and the situation is similar for Slovakian and Hungarian haulage companies.

Since the beginning of the war, Ukraine has significantly expanded its freight forwarding industry by exempting the import of vehicles from customs duties. This was in response to the blockade of the Black Sea ports, through which the majority of Ukraine's foreign trade was traditionally handled. Polish haulage companies are calculating how Ukrainian competitors are undercutting their prices due to lower fuel prices, taxes and wages. Moreover, contrary to the agreement with the EU, Ukrainian drivers are not only active in bilateral goods traffic, but also transport loads within the EU, for example between Poland and Germany. Although this contradicts the agreement, the Polish and German police have apparently given up on monitoring compliance. A Polish police spokesperson told the magazine Przegląd that fines imposed on Ukrainian drivers are not paid anyway and cannot be collected due to the lack of a mutual legal assistance agreement.

German businesses are now also complaining about the consequences of the blockades. Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland quoted a representative of the Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations as saying that delivery times for goods from Ukraine have recently tripled and transportation costs have doubled or quadrupled. If no solution is found, German customers will have to look for other suppliers. The German automotive industry in particular is now having labor-intensive production work carried out in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian side now estimates the damage caused by the blockades at 400 million euros. Deputy Transport Minister Sergiy Derkach complained that the price of liquid gas at Ukrainian filling stations had now risen by 30 percent. He accused Polish haulage companies of at least accepting an energy crisis in Ukraine in the coming winter.

The truck blockades were also discussed in the EU Council of Transport Ministers on Monday. Here, the Polish demand for the reintroduction of the maximum limit was rejected by a majority. Poland was supported by Slovakia, Hungary and Bulgaria, as well as in part by the Czech Republic and Croatia. However, EU Transport Commissioner Adina Ioana Vălean accused Warsaw of a lack of political solidarity with Ukraine and recalled that Poland had been one of the biggest advocates of Ukraine's accession to the EU and the "solidarity corridors" in road transport at the beginning of the war. She was supported in this by representatives of the Baltic states, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands. Vălean at least agreed to discuss the issue with Ukraine at EU level - but only once the Poles had ended their blockades. It doesn't look like that will happen at the moment. The action is to continue until January 3 for the time being.

German article

Two Ukrainian truck drivers died on the Polish-Ukrainian border so far and it's planned to continue the blockade until at least January.

Bleak. I wouldn't want to be a Ukrainian truck driver right now, but still better than dieing at the front I guess.

Rybar December 5, things are really heating up in a lot of places now

spoiler❗️🇮🇱🇵🇸 Escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone Chronicle of events leading up to December 5, 2023

Israeli troops in Gaza Strip have intensified their activities in all directions. In the northwest of the enclave, IDF fighters have nearly surrounded the small town of Beit Lahiya and are engaged in combat near the Kamal Adwan hospital and the Shadiya Abu Ghazala school, located on the southern exit from the village. These locations are situated on the western and eastern flanks of IDF control in the area, with a distance of just under two kilometers between them. Once this area is secured, the encirclement of Beit Lahiya will be complete.

Furthermore, intense fighting is taking place in the Shujaya region. This quarter is located in the southeastern part of the Gaza Strip that Israeli troops separated from the rest of the enclave a month ago. IDF fighters are advancing towards the center of Gaza City and are likely planning to connect with other Israeli forces that were operating at Al-Wafa Hospital. If successful, this plan will further divide the city.

Meanwhile, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces have launched a major offensive towards Khan Yunis. They have rapidly advanced along the Salah ad-Din highway to the eastern outskirts of the city. Presently, fighting is taking place in Bani Suheila on the outskirts of Khan Yunis. The IDF command claims to have already gained control of the city center, but there have been no videos or messages from Palestinians confirming this. However, given the speed of the Israeli advance, if it hasn't happened yet, it is likely to occur in the near future.

The Palestinians are launching counterattacks on all sectors of the front, but are unable to halt the advance of the Israel Defense Forces. Nevertheless, they have managed to inflict significant damage on Israeli personnel and equipment. Today, a video of a militant ambush on an IDF field camp near Juhr al-Dik was widely circulated on the internet. According to Palestinian groups, they have wounded and killed more than a dozen fighters today alone, and have also damaged 24 pieces of equipment.

The President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, after a meeting with the country's justice minister, decided to comply with the decision to release former dictator Alberto Fujimori.

The Executive had the option of not accepting this decision by the Constitutional Court, since the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the IACHR, had already invalidated the pardon granted to Fujimori by the former president, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.
