Due to American cluster bombing campaigns advised by Kissinger during the Vietnam War to damage supply lines, over 2 million tonnes of ordinance were dropped on Laos over about a decade, averaging a planeload of bombs every 8 minutes. Laos is thus the most bombed country on the planet up to this point. 80 million bombs failed to explode - the cleanup operation is expected to take centuries, and 25,000 people have been killed and injured by bombs in the last 50 years. About 50 people are killed or injured every year to this day.

After the United States withdrew from Laos, the Pathet Lao took power and abolished the monarchy. Kaysone Phomvihane became a dominant figure in Laotian politics, keeping the course on Marxism-Leninism and implementing the first Five Year Plan in 1981. The second Five Year Plan in 1986 was modelled on Lenin's NEP, and this doubled rice production and significantly increased sugar production. After the fall of the USSR, Laos allowed a small capitalist class to exist, with similar control over them as in China. Laos maintains a 48-hour work week with paid sick leave, vacation time, and maternity leave, and workers are well-represented in trade unions. They faired relatively well during coronavirus from a social standpoint due to quick and efficient action to lock down the country, experiencing ~750 deaths out of a population of over 7 million.

There is hope even after utter destruction by genocidal oppressors.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

Essequibo Crisis:

Foreign Ministers of Venezuela and Guyana hold a telephone conversation to discuss the controversy over the Esequibo territory.

Wang Wenbin, Chinese spokesperson, says he "supports Venezuela and Guyana" in the Essequibo dispute because "both are good friends." - Times of India

Guyana rejects Venezuela's actions on the Essequibo: "We do not believe they will order an invasion" (Spanish Only)

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guyana, Hugh Todd, expressed that the neighboring country is "vigilant" in the dispute with Venezuela over the Essequibo territory.

The official ruled out that the Government of Nicolás Maduro is ordering an invasion in the region, however, he assured that they are alert.

"We must always remain vigilant (...). Although we do not believe that he is going to order an invasion, we have to be realistic about the environment in Venezuela and the fact that President (Nicolas) Maduro may do something that may be very unpredictable," Todd said about this Sunday's consultative referendum.

Todd stressed that Guyana will maintain defense cooperation with the United States and other partners and would continue diplomatic efforts bilaterally and in organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS) to insist that the century-old dispute between the two countries should be resolved in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

"We have already made it clear that we will abide by the court's ruling," Todd said.

For his part, the State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, urged both countries to resolve the conflict over the Essequibo territory peacefully, as well as to respect the borders.

I>n a press conference, Miller expressed his opinion on the results offered by the Government of Nicolás Maduro in the consultation of this Sunday, December 3, to which he assured that "this is not something that can be resolved by means of a referendum".

"We ask Venezuela and Guyana to continue to seek a peaceful solution to their dispute," the U.S. official added.

Peru Update:

Peru's National Justice Board has removed the country's Attorney General, Patricia Benavides, from office for six months. (Spanish Only)

She is accused of corruption and embezzlement in the public administration

Peru's National Board of Justice suspended on Wednesday night for six months the attorney general, Patricia Benavides, who is under investigation for an alleged case of influence peddling and political favors.

"The provisional suspension for six months of Patricia Benavides as supreme prosecutor of the Public Ministry is ordered," said a statement from the National Justice Board, which is in charge of appointing, ratifying and dismissing judges and prosecutors.

Benavides' suspension is intended to allow a disciplinary proceeding against her for allegedly leading a criminal network to proceed normally and "prevent her from being obstructed," the statement added.

Peru's president, Dina Boluarte, spoke out a week ago against the continuity in office of the questioned attorney general.

Benavides filed a complaint before Congress on November 27, accusing Boluarte for the alleged crime of homicide as responsible for the repression of the protests against her government, which left more than 50 people dead after she came to power a year ago.

The complaint against Boluarte was activated after Benavides was accused by a prosecutor of heading an alleged criminal network embedded in the top of the prosecutor's office, from where she allegedly exercised influence peddling with Congress and exchanged political favors.

The prosecutor was until now perceived as an ally of the conservative coalition of the Executive and the Congress since the beginning of the current government.

The accusation against Boluarte, which could lead to the impeachment of the president, could take a few weeks to be admitted, but it could also be used as an element of pressure in a struggle between the government and the Congress.

Boluarte assumed power in December last year after the dismissal of Pedro Castillo for his attempt to dissolve the Congress and rule by decree.

After he came to power, demonstrations broke out in which 54 people were killed, including six soldiers.

According to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, some twenty of the victims died as a result of bullets fired by military forces.

He was one of the people behind the coup that ousted Castillo.

Lula on the tension between Venezuela and Guyana: "We do not want wars or conflicts". (Spanish Only)

The Brazilian president recommended that Celac and Unasur "be fully utilized to channel this issue in a peaceful manner".

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, affirmed this Thursday, at the biannual Mercosur summit, that he is following with "growing concern" the tensions between Venezuela and Guyana over the Essequibo region and called on Celac to mediate between the two countries.

"We do not want wars or conflicts, we need to build peace, because only with peace can we develop our countries", warned Lula at the opening of the presidential meeting of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) in Rio de Janeiro.

The Brazilian president said that Mercosur "cannot remain oblivious to this situation" and that he will submit a resolution to be included in the final declaration of the summit to be voted on by the other three members of the bloc (Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay).

The growing tensions between Venezuela and Guyana over the Esequibo jungle region, an area of 160,000 square kilometers controlled by Guyana, rich in oil and minerals, and whose possession Caracas has claimed for more than a century, was one of the first points addressed by Lula in his speech.

The Brazilian head of state said that South America does not want this "controversy to contaminate the resumption of the regional integration process", promoted from Brasilia, or "constitute a threat to the peace and stability" of its countries.

In this sense, he recommended that the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) "be fully utilized to channel peacefully the process of regional integration".

Mauro Vieira, Brazil's foreign minister, talks to Venezuela's foreign minister and Guyana's president

According to reports made to CNN, Vieira received a call from the Venezuelan and "listened more than he spoke". The call was not yet public knowledge.

The day before, the Brazilian Chancellor had also spoken with the President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali. In an interview with CNN, Ali said he had received support from his colleague Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in discussions about the Essequibo region, claimed by Venezuela.

On Thursday (7), the Mercosur countries - plus Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru - issued a joint statement expressing their "deep concern" at the escalation of tensions between Venezuela and Guyana.

Venezuela Rejects Statements by the President of Guyana

Venezuela urges Guyana to abandon its erratic, threatening, and risky behavior and to resume dialogue through the Geneva Agreement.

On Wednesday, the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the statements made by Guyana's President Irfaan Ali regarding the Essequibo region. The text of the Venezuelan response is presented below:

"The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela condemns the recent statements made by President Irfaan Ali, who, in a reckless manner, has given the green light to the presence of the United States Southern Command in the territory of the Guayana Esequiba region, over which Guyana maintains a de facto occupa- tion and a territorial dispute with Venezuela.

This dispute is meant to be resolved through the 1966 Geneva Agreement, the only valid legal instrument between the parties.

Venezuela denounces, before the international community, and especially before the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the imprudent attitude of Guyana.

Acting under the mandate of the U.S. transnational Exxon Mobil, Guyana is opening the possibility of establishing military bases for an imperial power, thereby threatening the Zone of Peace outlined in this region.

The Cooperative Republic of Guyana recklessly violates international law, taking actions that exacerbate the territorial dispute and add to its illegal con- duct of granting oil exploitation rights to Exxon Mobil over a sea area pending delimitation with Venezuela.

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, true to its doctrine of Bolivarian Diplomacy for Peace, urges the Government of Guyana to abandon its erratic, threatening, and risky behavior and to resume the path of direct dialogue through the Geneva Agreement."
