If there is a growing community that should be in this list, please comment it below.

If you think a category should / should not be in this list, let us know. There are so many amazing communities, but we also don't want this list to feel overwhelming.

!nanaimo@lemmy.ca is another city community.

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 years ago

Thanks! Added it to both

Love the banner and icon :)

We’re deep in the summer NBA doldrums but !torontoraptors@lemmy.ca is trying to get traction.

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 years ago

Thank you! added

[-] tjernobyl@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 years ago

/c/ThunderBay exists, but doesn't have much activity yet.

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 years ago

thank you! Added

There's a fairly inactive community for Saskatoon: !saskatoon@lemmy.ca

Hopefully putting it here gets it more visibility.

Edit: Since we don't really hate each other, even if we pretend to, I'll also point out Regina's community: !regina@lemmy.ca

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 years ago

Thanks! Both have been added to the post & sidebar

[-] GrackleBirb@lemmy.ca 2 points 8 months ago

!CanadianSkincare@lemmy.ca is another community that is becoming more active

I tried to start a community called Assorted Crafts, but for some reason the url shows up with my user name instead of the community name.

https://lemmy.ca/c/Amuletta

How can I fix it? Do I need to blow it away and start again?

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 months ago

Ah, I can see how the 'name' field can be misinterpreted. That was supposed to be the short name of the community, and it will appear in the URL. Unfortunately, that field can't be changed after the community as been created. Even if we mess with the database on lemmy.ca, it might show up incorrectly elsewhere.

Since the community is just starting out, the easiest would be to make a new one with the name that you want.

There are also a few other communities that you might enjoy:

It's totally up to you if you want to post in those or if you want to build your own community. If you want to build your own, you can also cross post to / from these communities to help it grow.

[-] Amuletta@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 months ago

Thanks, I guess I'll try again.

!greater_sudbury@lemmy.ca is actually the 2nd or 3rd oldest city-based community on lemmy.ca . It's not very active, but should definitely be added to this list.

Also, !canadasoccer@lemmy.ca would be a good community to add to the soccer category.

For team-specific Canadian-based soccer teams, there's !torontofc@lemmy.ca of the MLS (US-league with 3 Canadian-based teams). Other MLS sides include Vancouver Whitecaps and CF Montreal, which I don't think have a community created.

None of the 8 Canadian Premier League teams, nor any of the numerous League1 Canada sides have taken steps to establish their communities yet (as far as I know).

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 years ago

Thank you! Added all three to the post and the sidebar.

I'll also keep a look out for the other teams if they should pop up :)

[-] SRGray@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 years ago

If I see any, I'll be sure to let you know!

[-] leftwingmememachine@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Would love if you could add !ndp@lemmy.ca, and perhaps combine it with canadapolitics under a "politics" category?

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 years ago

Thank you, updated!

Thank you, it's been added to both!

[-] Beaver@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 years ago

May I request that !fairvote@lemmy.ca be added under the politics section?

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 years ago

Thanks! Both should be updated now :)

There are two communities I would really like to see some traffic driven to:

!maplemusic@lemmy.ca - Celebrating Canadian music

!givergaming@lemmy.ca - Celebrating Canadian games, gamedevs and studios

I think these would be an easy add to the Canadian Social / Culture section.

Oh there's also /c/QuebecLibre which is NOT about Québec separatism, but about free (as in LIBRE) open source software in Québec.

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

Added as well!

I added both to the 🍁 Social / Culture section, and I listed this one as Logiciels libres au Québec

[-] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

Hahaha that's perfect

I went ahead and made a Windsor community! Windsor is the city I was born in and I grew up in Essex County, so I felt a little left out not being on this list. While the community is named for Windsor, I figured it'd make sense to welcome content from all over Essex county instead of making community bloat for every town in the county.

/c/Windsor or !Windsor@lemmy.ca

Hey, I added Burnaby, Anmore, Squamish, Whistler, Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake.

https://lemmy.ca/c/Burnaby

https://lemmy.ca/c/Anmore

https://lemmy.ca/c/Squamish

https://lemmy.ca/c/Whistler

https://lemmy.ca/c/NiagaraFalls

https://lemmy.ca/c/NiagaraOnTheLake

Will moderate them, but looking for new mods who might live in these areas. I've lived either in or near them. And still visit.
