Homophobic executives owned once again. Where do you get the Blu-ray?

[-] Cromalin@hexbear.net 15 points 2 years ago

japan exclusive currently, and i'm pretty sure it's like 100$ for 2 episodes or somethign, the japanese anime bluray market is insane

it's why things can cost so much in the west, so that they can't just get sold back to japan and undercut the sky high prices

Stuff targeted to super fans is always really expensive in Japan. Even back in the 80s in Japan, OVA tapes would be expensive af. Here's a neat reddit comment that shows an old ad from Newtype magazine and tries to hash out the cost.

I think in Japan, "normal" people just watch stuff on TV or read cheaply printed manga magazines (they even have manga cafes for this) and the true sickos spend big bucks on blurays and tankobon collectors releases.

god damn i didn't realize it was that bad

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 2 points 2 years ago

I think most consumption of OVAs back then was through rentals, which makes a lot more sense than paying $50 in 2023 money per episode, but this is coming off of half-remembered Mobile Suit Breakdown episodes lol.

that's how the bluray industry works now, so i assume that's a carryover from back then

[-] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 15 points 2 years ago

Thanks for posting updates. It's good to hear that more emphasis is being put on them being gay married. Fuck the homophobic execs.

rat-salute happy to be of service

They must have asked the execs "if they're just interpretation friendship rings, can we add them back into more shots for the bluray?" followed by a "these old fucks are never going to read the commentary heh"

[-] Cromalin@hexbear.net 8 points 2 years ago

either that or they just asked a different less homophobic guy at bandai who was on the same level as whoever shut down the last one. i think there's gotta be so much departmental politics going on behind the scenes of this stuff

Is this watchable without having watched any of the other Gundams?

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago

Yeah, it's self contained. Be sure to start with the prologue episode though.

[-] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 8 points 2 years ago

It's still hilarious to me that people skipped the prologue and didn't expect how dark and brutal things got

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 5 points 2 years ago

I didn't even know the prologue existed until after the first season.๐Ÿ˜… But I'm familiar with Gundam so... yea

[-] Cromalin@hexbear.net 6 points 2 years ago

yeah totally. completely different continuity. i really would recommend watching other gundams (0079 is a classic for a reason, and turn a gundam is one of my all time favorites and is also very queer) but g-witch isn't bad and is completely standalone. if you like it (and especially if you like the stuff about the tensions between space colonies and earth and the background politics) definitely check out other gundams

I finally watched this a couple of days ago and wanted to thank you for the rec! Very enjoyable (although the second cour/season felt a bit rushed, I wish they have had more time to explore the Earth subplot), I also noticed a lot of thematic continuities and narrative similarities to Utena (which I just recently watched as well). If you know of any other similar wlw stories send them my way!

I am a bit wary of diving deeper into Gundam because I'm terrible at watching long shows, but I will keep them in mind.
