Removed works include Saul Bellow’s ‘Herzog’ and ‘Black, White and Jewish’; no individual reasoning given for books' removal.

….

The purge of books from Orange County Public Schools, in Orlando, over the course of the past semester is the latest consequence of a conservative movement across the country — and strongest in Florida — to rid public and school libraries of materials deemed offensive. While the vast majority of such challenged and removed books involve race, gender and sexuality, several Jewish books have previously been caught in the dragnet.

Can't allow anyone to learn from history, then they won't let them repeat it.

[-] BruceTwarzen@kbin.social 6 points 11 months ago

At least they eradicated most indians, so they can't repeat that.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

They can. They'll just find someone else to eradicate. Queer people, for instance.

It looks increasingly and disturbingly likely that we will see some sort of second civil war, this time between the (mostly) southern and midwestern fascists and the (mostly) coastal progressives.

"materials deemed offensive" my ass!

They're systematically removing everything that doesn't support their 1700s worldview of cishet white Christians being the default humans whom everything and everyone belongs to and it's WAY past time for non-fascist media to acknowledge it!

Good point.

This is extremely alarming. The hands of fascism are gripping the rug.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago

Oh good. As a Jewish-American I haven't been scared enough of being in this country yet.

Ron DeSantis and his Nazi homies don't want their feelings hurt for being white trash garbage people.

[-] xc2215x@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

They use offensive as an excuse because they would look like Nazis otherwise.

[-] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

Didn't work. They still look like Nazis to me.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

And the Republican presidential candidates are currently all trying to out-Nazi each other. Although Trump literally quoting Hitler seems to be the winner.

[-] Pratai@lemmy.ca 9 points 11 months ago

Cowards do cowardly thing. News at 11.

[-] Syo@kbin.social 8 points 11 months ago

"Trump is quoting fascists!"

"Can you back up your assertion with real book citations, yeah, didn't think so. You're all just part of the woke Internet."

Maybe we should round up the conservatives and send them to re-education camps. I don't think anyone in any history book has ever done something like that to any groups of people, so it should be no problem. What's the worst that could happen?
