Welcome to the first news megathread of 2024! Last year saw rather little territorial movement in Ukraine (though shocking levels of attrition), and while BRICS has made some important moves, such as the upcoming expansion, there's no massive anti-imperialist offensive yet for us to really analyze. Instead, a lot of things have been going on behind the scenes, with the anti-hegemonic axis of China, Russia, Iran, and others forming a lot of bilateral currency deals as they distance themselves from the dollar. This all culminated in a rather boring year, or so I had thought until October 7th. The courage and heroism of the Gazan Resistance showed us that the imperialists truly are paper tigers, and Ansarallah demonstrated that American naval control is more illusory than the likes of John Bolton would like to admit.

This year will almost certainly be even more interesting and horrific. Debt across the developing world is at record levels, and the incoming hurricane that is the global recession not just on the horizon, but rapidly moving inland. Russia seems to once again be escalating in Ukraine with the return of large missile strikes, and the Zionist entity is failing to make much progress against Hamas, let alone Hezbollah, let alone Iran - instead vying for civilian bombings and propaganda campaigns (e.g. wedding proposals and drawing stars of David in Gaza to prove just how not mad and not owned they are, as their soldiers shit their pants due to insufficient military preparation and brigades are withdrawn due to the tremendous casualties they are experiencing). I'm sure there will be other sudden events that will occur this year. Here's my bingo grid:

In the midst of all this, it's easy to forget the other underdog nation on the other side of the world from Palestine - Haiti. Since I last covered them, about half a year ago, the UN was on the verge of allowing a Kenyan police force to enter Haiti to "restore order", as the country is in a chaotic, perhaps potentially revolutionary situation. This has been described by various Haitian analysts and experts as essentially a US military force in blackface - white blows from a black hand - and Kenya's president, Ruto, has received a lot of aid from the US because of their willingness to step up, including a five year military deal. It took a while longer than I thought for the vote to occur, but on October 2nd, the UNSC allowed Kenya to do this (Russia and China abstained). However, the Kenyan Supreme Court needs to confirm that this is constitutional, and will give their verdict by January 26th. Many Kenyan lawyers and opposition leaders say that this is blatantly not constitutional, but given all the US aid on the line, breaking the constitution might be worth it to Ruto, whatever the backlash.

From the article from which much of the above information has been sourced:

But Washington now has its hands full with other problems. Its proxy war against Russia via Ukraine is going very badly, a fact that even the U.S. mainstream media is now forced to acknowledge. Meanwhile, the successful Oct. 7 uprising by Palestinian fighters against Israeli occupiers has apparently blindsided both the U.S. empire and its foremost client state. The entire Arab world and Global South are both horrified and outraged by Israel’s ever-growing war crimes, as over 20,000 Palestinians, half of them children, have been slaughtered and starved. Meanwhile, the dysfunction in Washington is deepening, Biden’s approval rating is plummeting, and the U.S. economy is lurching toward another crash.

All this means that Haiti may finally catch a break. The desperation in Haiti is very intense but so is the apprehension of and indignation against another foreign intervention. That resistance continues in the streets of Haiti and its diaspora.

Viva Haiti!

I read a silly interview with a "military analyst" in a western mainstream media outlet. It dealt with the intensified Russian bombings in Ukraine and gives a nice picture of how the west views things at the moment. In summary it said:

  • Ukraine's air defenses are good and are getting better
  • The large attacks were very expensive
  • The military benefit was too low to justify the expense
  • They could have hot military targets but Ukraine never admits to this (no explanation for how we can know the military impact when we don't know whether they got military targets or not)
  • We know Russia targeted civilian infrastructure because a lot of damage to civilian infrastructure was reported
  • Instead Russia had two goals with the attacks.
  • One was to boast Putin's popularity before the upcoming presidential elections (I thought Russia was an authoritian illiberal dictatorship with rigged elections, but apparently they need to win hearts and minds this time)
  • The other was an attempt to strike civilian infrastructure to make life suck for Ukrainians. It is a firm Russian belief that Ukraine can be punished into submission.
  • It won't work though, if anything the recent attacks are showing Ukrainians how they need to stand together against Russia.

https://scrolla.africa/king-misuzulu-blesses-the-eff-ahead-of-2024-elections/

An older article from last month that caught my eye. For context, the Ingonyama Trust owns 30% of the land in Kwazulu-Natal province of South Africa which is about 28 000 square kilometres or 11 000 square miles, and the Zulu king is the sole trustee, even though the Zulu people are technically supposed to own the land through communal ownership through ancestral ties to the land. In 2022, the trust was ordered to reimburse people living on the land, after unlawfully charging them rent for land they had lived on for generations. The important bits:

EFF leader Julius Malema has assured the King of the Zulu nation that the Ingonyama Trust land is safe from expropriation of land without compensation.

“We have assured the King that there is no contradiction on our call for the land to be owned by the state because that’s what the Ingonyama Trust is doing. The Ingonyama Trust and the King are the state so they are not affected by the expropriation of land without compensation,” said Malema.

Malema said that when the land is owned by the King it means people have access to that land without any problem.

He also made it clear that the EFF believed that no one should overlook the structure of traditional leadership. He said the royal kingdoms still have a big role to play under the democratic government because they serve communities every day.

South African politics, the contradictions of underdevelopment and it's consequences... The EFF aren't even in power, hell they aren't even the official opposition, and they're already compromising with a monarchy... And this is the left wing party in the mainstream.. please god just end it all

Almost All Leopard-2 Tanks “Gone”; German Lawmaker Says Only A Few MBTs Supplied To Ukraine Operational

Lol. Lmao even

A prominent German lawmaker and key decision-maker in defense budget allocations, Sebastian Schäfer, has revealed that only a limited number of the modern Leopard 2 tanks supplied by Germany to Ukraine are currently operational.

According to Schäfer, who holds influential roles in the Bundestag’s defense and finance committees, the primary cause behind this operational shortfall is the scarcity of essential spare parts needed for repairs.

Schäfer, an economist and member of Germany’s Green Party, recently communicated his concerns in a letter, urging weapons manufacturers to address the challenges in the repair process and expedite the supply of spare parts for the damaged Leopard tanks, reported Der Spiegel, a prominent German media outlet.

The lawmaker and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius visited a repair workshop in Lithuania in late December, discovering that repairs were being significantly delayed.

The shortage of spare parts has led to only a “very small number” of the originally delivered Leopard tanks remaining operational in Ukraine, as highlighted by Schäfer.

“Unfortunately, it has to be noted that only a very small number of the main battle tanks delivered can still be used by Ukraine,” the politician said.

The urgency of the matter was underscored by the lawmaker, who emphasized the need for swift action to reinforce the supply of spare parts. Additionally, he pointed out that attempts by Ukrainian forces to conduct repairs have, in some instances, further exacerbated the damage to the Leopard tanks.

In proposing a solution, Schäfer suggested that Germany engage in discussions to provide additional training or instructions for Ukrainian mechanics.

Adding another layer to this predicament, representatives from the industrial repair shop in Lithuania disclosed to German media that the repair processes are protracted due to a pronounced scarcity of essential spare parts.

This revelation underscores a critical challenge in maintaining the operational readiness of military assets, necessitating urgent attention from relevant stakeholders.

Nonetheless, Berlin remains committed to providing ongoing support to Ukraine. In November, Germany’s defense ministry announced a substantial support package for Ukraine, totaling around $1.1 billion and encompassing a diverse array of new weapons.

Leopard Tanks In Ukraine

Following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the international community, led by the United States and Germany, among other NATO countries, swiftly rallied to reinforce the Eastern European nation’s defenses.

While the US has assumed the role of Ukraine’s primary supporter since the conflict’s inception, Germany has emerged as the second-largest contributor.

Responding to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s persistent appeals to replace aging Soviet-era weaponry, Western allies, notably Germany, heeded the call for advanced battle tanks, with the German-made Leopards topping the list.

The green light for deliveries was granted in January 2023 following prolonged deliberations. US President Joe Biden pledged to send 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, prompting Germany to dispatch 18 Leopard 2 MBTs.

Joining Germany in support, countries like Canada, Poland, and Portugal also contributed Leopard tanks to Ukraine’s defense efforts.

Germany authorized a European coalition to dispatch a large fleet, including 88 Leopard 1 tanks and approximately 80 Leopard 2 tanks, addressing Ukrainian President Zelensky’s plea for modernized military equipment.

While Leopard 1 tanks are relics from the Cold War era, discontinued by Germany in 2000, Leopard 2s are acknowledged as some of the most advanced tanks deployed by Ukraine in the ongoing conflict.

However, the ambitious arsenal promised by the international supporters faced setbacks, primarily attributed to supply chain challenges and the need to refurbish the aging Leopard 1 tanks.

Complicating matters, Ukraine previously rejected 10 Leopard 1 tanks due to poor condition upon arrival, coupled with the technical challenge of repairing them.

Moreover, before Germany committed to dispatching Leopard tanks to Ukraine, the head of German military manufacturer Rheinmetall highlighted the necessity of dismantling and rebuilding stocks of Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 tanks.

Besides that, reports suggested that many of the 18 Leopard 2 tanks provided by Germany suffered significant damage during the battle, reflecting the intensity and extended duration of combat.

Meanwhile, as Ukraine confronts its second winter of the conflict, there has been a notable shift in the utilization of Leopard 2 tanks. Instead of offensive maneuvers, these tanks are now employed defensively as long-range artillery.

This adjustment aligns with Ukraine’s recent shift towards a more defensive stance, attempting to hold positions against escalating attacks as part of its ongoing efforts to counter Russian aggression.

2019 interview with Alexey Arestovich advisor to Ukraine's president. from about 7m45s onwards Arestovich talks about having to goad Russia into attacking before Ukraine can join NATO. the ongoing "war" they refer to in this video is their civil war against DPR and LPR, by the way.

the real reason I'm posting though is because at about 10m this Ukrainian guy unironically says that Russia's elite has a group set up for the "USSR-2 project" ussr-cry , which made me bust out laughing and also makes me think he's a delusional fascist.

Lula postpones visa requirement for tourists from the USA, Canada and Australia until April 10

Visas would be charged from January 10, but the government has postponed the requirement again. Release of the document was adopted in 2019 by then president Jair Bolsonaro.

The government has postponed the visa requirement for the second time. The original date was October 1, 2023 and then it was postponed to January 10, 2024. Now, the new date is April 10. The requirement will take into account the date of arrival in Brazil.

"The extension is intended to complete the process of implementing the system and to avoid the start of implementation in a period close to the high travel season at the end and beginning of the year. The intention is to guarantee a safe introduction for the measure, without consequences for the tourism sector," the government said in a press release. Parliamentarians had been pushing to overturn the decree that had foreseen the resumption of the charge in January.

The release of the visa requirement was adopted in 2019 by then-president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who did not require an identical measure for Brazilians wishing to visit these countries.

Lula decided to resume the need for the document based on the principle of reciprocity. Brazil only stops requiring a visa if there is an equal counterpart from the other country.

I just read the most annoyingly navel-gazing interview and now you have to suffer as well:

Beyond Crazy’: The Liberal Jew Mugged by a Post-Oct. 7 World

CW: Liberalism, French intellectuals, liberal zionism

French rabbi Delphine Horvilleur says the antisemitism in the U.S. following Hamas’ attack on Israel is not so surprising — and all too familiar. ](https://archive.vn/drHpx)

Horvilleur is a French rabbi who is a fixture in the media and public debates in her home country. She is passionate, learned and, even when conversation turns dark, funny. The weariness is recent. She is politically a woman of the left, a not shy critic of Israel’s government and a feminist. But now she finds herself sounding like her ideological sparring partners when it comes to Israel and the threat of antisemitism. In the past three months, her world was turned “upside down,” and she is struggling to “find stable ground.” Her experience is not uncommon for liberal Jews on either side of the Atlantic.

Or, to put it bluntly, she's a liberal whining about how tough it is for her that people are mad about a genocide she supports.

She was visibly disturbed. By the dangers faced by her children; her teenage son had just refused her request to take off his Star of David necklace for his safety in Paris, a decision that she says she accepted. As well as by anxious calls from congregants of her synagogue in Paris.

Not for a single moment does she or the hack interviewing her ponder the dangers faced by Palestinian children or the anxiety the victims of the Gaza massacres are experiencing. They could as well not have existed in the first place.

For years, her different approach brought her applause from a wider French audience and criticism from more traditional Jews who regarded her as too far to the left, too willing to call out Israel’s policies, somehow not Jewish enough. Oct. 7 was a turning point for her in a way that she believes it was for many of her American Jewish friends, going back to the years she spent at New York’s Hebrew Union College.

She's a leftist okay. She has said that the illegal zionist entity should eradicate Palestine in a cleaner, more civilised way.

While Jews had experienced rising hatred in France since the early 1990s, and were killed for being Jewish there, Gaza changed her perspective by making her more aware of Israel’s fragility. Then the outrage over Israel’s conduct during the war, in particular from allies on the progressive wing of politics, suddenly left her with fewer friends. She sees the human toll in Gaza but speaks more of the hurt she feels by the lack of condemnation of what Hamas did and of understanding for the hurt of the Jews. She makes sure to say she doesn’t believe “every criticism of Israel is antisemitism.” Israel “has always needed criticism, especially from the Diaspora,” and “is still threatened by a lack of criticism.” She never hid her distaste for Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing allies in government. Yet she is more reticent to criticize now. She is asked repeatedly to join calls for a ceasefire in Gaza — and demurs.

Behold, the utter moral bankruptcy of liberalism. People not condemning KHamas enough is worse than the zionists committing an active genocide. The whole world revolves around her and her feelings and somehow the wider public needs to know how sad it is for her that supporting a genocide makes people not want to be her friend.

Lol about her realising the fragility of the settler colonialist project though.

Instead she notes that so much of the current discourse, a word she often uses, crosses a clear line for her, where “Israel has become demonized in a way that is beyond crazy.” Portraying Israeli soldiers “as modern-day demons thirsty for children’s blood,” she says, could be “in competition with the worst antisemitism of the Middle Ages.”

The zionist stormtroopers have literally murdered thousands of children and continues to do Tiktok dances in the rubble where said children are still buried. Calling someone demonic for doing so is descriptive.

In the 1930s the Jews were figures of femininity,” she continues. “Now the Jew has become the Alpha Male incarnated by the Israeli soldier. Before Jews were accused of being stateless. At a time of colonial sin, the Jew is the stereotypical colonial master. I’m pretty sure in the future Jews will be accused of pollution more than others

The wokes are at it again, calling people colonisers simply because they occupied someone else's land, and continues to murder and displace them.

In her telling, French Jews know the “loneliness” and anxiety that American Jews say they now feel well. You had the Dreyfus affair at the turn of the past century, a manifestation of official French antisemitism. The Vichy regime rounded up and sent French Jews to the Nazi camps.

Do you remember the Holocaust? You wouldn't think so, but somehow the genocide against European Jews, carried out by white Christian fascists 80 years ago, is of utmost relevance to the Palestinian liberation struggle today.

As for Israel, she adds, “Oct. 7 shattered the idea of Israel being a strong guardian for us.

fuck-around

It’s as if Israel itself became part of the Jewish Diaspora.” She finds that in the current climate, “whether I want it or not,” she has to be an “advocate for Israel” in ways that she couldn’t imagine before.

No you don't, you slimy fuck. You see a genocide and choose to support it.

By that, she points to conflicting voices in her head. One pushes her to continue to seek allies among the French who, 80 years ago, joined the resistance against the Nazis. The other warns her of the collaborationists in her midst. “Your neighbor,” she says all French Jews know, “could be your killer.”

Stop yourself. Nobody wants to kill a whining self-infatuated liberal with shit politics.

People are actually being murdered in the thousands in Palestine and she chooses to obsess about what a non-specific generalized neighbour might do, maybe, instead. The self-victimisation is reaching ludicrous levels.

SCMP: China and Russia test ‘hack-proof’ quantum communication link for Brics countries

Scientists in Russia and China have established quantum communication encrypted with the help of secure keys transmitted by China’s quantum satellite, showing that a Brics quantum communication network may be technically feasible. The scientists were able to span 3,800km (2,360 miles) between a ground station close to Moscow and another near Urumqi in China’s western Xinjiang region to send two encoded images secured by quantum keys.

The first “full cycle” quantum communication test between the two countries was successfully conducted last year, said Alexey Fedorov, of Russia’s National University of Science and Technology (MISIS) and the Russian Quantum Centre (RQC), Russia’s leading institution in charge of creating a quantum computer, on December 14. Bridging the vast distance is possible with the help of China’s quantum satellite Mozi, which has opened pathways to develop national and international quantum communication networks.

...

Quantum communication – a form of quantum physics-based information transfer that uses cryptography to encode data in single photons – offers a way to transfer information that hackers cannot eavesdrop on, according to the paper. ...

To transfer quantum keys between long-distance ground stations, both stations must have detectors that pick up signals from a satellite. These devices “are not always working ideally”, Fedorov said.

Quantum cryptography is fascinating. One of my minor interests is cryptography, and I read a book on it and at the end it describes how quantum technology could be used to create unbreakable messaging systems. Like, it's directly tied to how the laws of physics work. Current encryption is essentially based on creating extremely difficult math problems that no digital computer could solve in anywhere close to a human lifetime, but could still hypothetically be broken.

Quantum codebreaking can break these math problems much easier and it'll cause a shitload of problems if that technology is developed (one of my conspiracy theories is that the CIA and similar organizations are going all-in on the technology and might be ahead of the current known technology), but quantum developments will also allow us to finally create a messaging system that fundamentally cannot be broken unless you already have the keys. Obviously there's the problem of creating a messaging system that can work across long distances (especially in an era of anti-satellite weaponry) but if that can be overcome...

The Israeli mind is an enigma to me, what do these anti-Netanyahu protesters carrying signs to “release the hostages caught by HAMAS” even want?

Are they asking for de-escalation and negotiations with Hamas? If so, why are they emphasizing how evil the captors are in their chants and signs?

Are they asking for escalation and destruction of Hamas and to violently re-capture and/or kill the hostages? Are they just humiliated by the existence of the captives and want that situation ended by force?

Such a muddled and incomprehensible movement. All the internal Israeli politics seem incredibly stupid and incoherent

The Danish PM's new year's speech summarized:

  • Look at me licking the monarchy's boot! I grovel at the feet of our wise and benevolent rulers, just like you peasants! Just thinking of the monarchy makes me smile like an infatuated teenager, just like you hogs.
  • Due to the queen resigning and a new guy becoming king I don't have time to talk about all the political stuff I planned to do, including an "elder care reform", but here's the most important single thing:
  • In vitro fertilization, it's awesone folks and we're going to expand the already existing access to it in the public healthcare system.
  • "Some people's hatred to 'Israel' and the living conditions of Palestinians"
  • The dead of the Al-Aqsa Flood were horrible and the thousands of Palestinians murdered in indiscriminate terror bombings are also bad.
  • "The allies ended world war II. NATO ended the war in the Balkans. The international community should create peace in the middle east."
  • The solution is a two-state solution brought about by Palestinians renouncing KHamas and antisemitism and the illegal zionist entity ceasing to do illegal settlements.
  • "The Ukraine war is a defence of the Europe we know"
  • The EU shat the bed by promising Kiev more ammunition than they we're able to produce. So Europe should "invest" in the armaments industry
  • No matter who wins the US election, Europe should be able to "do more" (referring to imperialist violence)
  • Nationalist boilerplate about historic continuity
  • And did I mention how much I love the monarchy?

Britain ‘considering airstrikes’ on Houthi rebels after Red Sea attacks

spoilerBritain is reportedly considering airstrikes on Houthi rebels after the US said its navy sank three boats that had been targeting a container ship in the Red Sea.

Grant Shapps, the defence secretary, said the government would not hesitate to take “direct action” to prevent further attacks amid reports the UK and US are preparing a joint statement to issue a final warning to the Yemeni group.

...

Writing in the Telegraph, Shapps said the UK “won’t hesitate to take further action to deter threats to freedom of navigation in the Red Sea”.

“The Houthis should be under no misunderstanding: we are committed to holding malign actors accountable for unlawful seizures and attacks,” he said.

...

David Cameron, the foreign secretary, said he had spoken to Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, on Sunday.

“I spoke to [Amir-Abdollahian] today about Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, which threaten innocent lives and the global economy,” Lord Cameron said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I made clear that Iran shares responsibility for preventing these attacks given their longstanding support to the Houthis.”

The UK is considering trying to get one of their ships sunk and I for one am here for it
