If you are on Android check out AntennaPod (available in F-Droid). It's legal and integrates with Apple Podcasts.
AntennaPod is great but most ads are directly injected into the files these days. The best you can do is skip them when they come up. AntennaPod allows you to set custom skips for the start and end of individual podcasts though which is useful.
I wish we had something like Sponsorblock but for podcasts instead of YouTube. Integrate that into AntennaPod and it'd be amazing.
Downloading with Ukraine VPN works for me to get rid of injected ads.

From the Home page, swipe in from the left side of the screen. Tap the podcast you want to skip the intro of. Tap the gear, then "Auto skip". It needs to be set for each individual podcast

I read that its a good idea to use a vpn to a very small, rather poor country. When the podcast has dynamic ads, it may not have one for your country and you can get it ad free. Havent tested it though.
