In a new twist to the fight over abortion access, congressional Republicans are trying to block a Biden administration spending rule that they say will cut off millions of dollars to anti-abortion counseling centers.

The rule would prohibit states from sending federal funds earmarked for needy Americans to so-called “crisis pregnancy centers,” which counsel against abortions. At stake are millions of dollars in federal funds that currently flow to the organizations through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, a block grant program created in 1996 to give cash assistance to poor children and prevent out-of-wedlock pregnancies.

“Programs that only or primarily provide pregnancy counseling to women only after they become pregnant likely do not meet the ... standard,” the Health and Human Services agency said in its rule proposal released late last year.

Perfect! Make the GOPers double down on both increased spending, and on their anti-abortion stance, during an election year.

Many can't afford to even ACCEPT money for free lunches for school kids. So yeah they should absolutely be cool with cutting this too.

A few dozen Red states have put abortion bans in place. For those states, if there are no abortions happening in their state, what is their rationale for channel money to centers counseling pregnant women against abortion?

I DON'T want my Tax Dollars going to feed Starving Children! I'd RATHER they go to Christian Clinics INSTEAD! I LOVE THE CONSTITUTION!

Wow. It's horrifying to know that tax dollars were funding these misinformation traps to begin with.

Member when republiQans ripped infants from the arms of their parents and left them in freezing cages? I mean . . . anything stance they want to take is effectively meaningless.

Republicans are invalid. They have jumped the pooch and screwed the shark.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a new twist to the fight over abortion access, congressional Republicans are trying to block a Biden administration spending rule that they say will cut off millions of dollars to anti-abortion counseling centers.

“Programs that only or primarily provide pregnancy counseling to women only after they become pregnant likely do not meet the ... standard,” the Health and Human Services agency said in its rule proposal released late last year.

The proposal limiting funds for anti-abortion counseling centers is the Biden administration’s latest attempt to introduce federal policies that expand abortion access.

“Pregnancy centers are an important and vital alternative for expectant mothers,” Republican Rep. Darin LaHood of Illinois said Thursday during a House Ways and Means Committee hearing to mark up the legislation.

The anti-abortion counseling centers have become an increasingly popular way for conservatives to sermonize against abortions, with an Associated Press investigation last year finding that states have been sending more and more money to the programs over the last decade.

The Human Coalition, an anti-abortion organization that has locations in Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Texas, estimates it would lose millions of dollars in funds, said Chelsey Youman, the group’s national director of public policy.

Hey, SCOTUS said "states rights," that means "states fund."

[-] DarkGamer@kbin.social -5 points 2 years ago

Given most of our existential threats are due to population pressures, we need more pro-abortion counseling centers.

[-] Zorque@kbin.social 7 points 2 years ago

They're not population related, they're logistics related. We have technology and resources in abundance to deal with almost all these existential threats... they're just not profitable enough for the people with power to implement.
