I feel like big_yikes is wrong for else. It would work better to replace Exception. Then use something like hits_different for else.

I noticed that the codebase was still using some outdated language paradigms in places, I've gone through and identified as many of those as possible and fixed them, code is currently passing all checks, but this is a large PR and will likely need some detailed review before merging.
