Although this is humorous,

Assisted suicide needs to be easier, and mental health needs to be taken more seriously. That poor guy with the parachute is gonna be fucked up for life. Additionally, the guy without could hurt or kill someone on the ground.

Or what if we tried to help people's lives not suck and gave them mental health support? Nah, suicide is cool and cuts into profits less.

You're both right. Sometimes life is unavoidably terrible with no recourse (see: most forms of dementia). Also we, as the most social species on the planet, should look out for each other more and make life better for everyone.

Yeah my grandmother is coming up on her 100th birthday but no one will be too sad if she doesn't make it because most days her life is pretty terrible. She has the rare okay day but it's just time to be good with saying goodbye.

I’d prefer a person was able to get help easily, of course, but if they really have made up their mind it shouldn’t be a crime to end the game.

Also, suicide doesn’t cut into profit. The rich need slaves that cannot escape.

I was saying suicide doesn't cut into profits so unless I misunderstood you, we agree?

I think I read it wrong.

Whatever happened to just swallowing a bunch of pills, shooting yourself at the computer chair, or dropping a toaster into the bathtub? Simpler times back then

[-] tsonfeir@lemm.ee 11 points 9 months ago

It’s pretty easy to fuck all of those up and be left worse off than you are.

Over 80% of suicide attempts fail. Over 90% of those leave the person with significant physical damage. That is to say, if you wanna go that route, best make real sure.

As for pills, you're in for a painful time. And you'd be amazed how much damage a head can sustain, especially from a poorly aimed weapon. Toaster? Water isn't that good of a conductor, and besides you know....fuses exist and work.

Those simpler times were also when mentally ill and unread pregnant were simply hidden away.

Suicide failure rates are highly associated with the method chosen. In particular, abortability, acceptability, and inherent lethality are important. Jumping, for example, is relatively lethal, but because most people fear heights many people abort before they work themselves up enough to jump.

According to a metastudy,

Based on the suicide acts that resulted in death or hospitalization, firearms were found to be the most lethal method (CFR:89.7%), followed by hanging/suffocation (84.5%), drowning (80.4%), gas poisoning (56.6%), jumping (46.7%), drug/liquid poisoning (8.0%) and cutting (4.0%).

(CFR = Case Fatality Rate)

All three methods are pretty risky to suffer a lot and potentially survive with dramatic injuries. There should be official, doctor-guided ways to end your life. It's not only in the best interest of the patient but also for society.

E.g. less traumatized people who get involuntarily involved (train drivers, people living/working near high buildings...). Less suffering in terms and hence medical costs caused by failed attempts etc.

Words of encouragement:

If at first you don't succeed... So much for skydiving.

Hello fellow Cyanide and Happiness fans!

About this community and how I post the comics… Many moons ago, I would ask my Dad to save the newspaper for me everyday so I could read my favorite comic strips. Of course these days you can read your favorite comics online instead of a newspaper, but I love the nostalgia of reading the daily comics. Anyway, one of my favorite current comics is Cyanide and Happiness and I will be posting the daily release from their website (https://explosm.net) and a an extra or two randoms.

Cyanide & Happiness (C&H) is a webcomic created by Rob DenBleyker, Kris Wilson, Dave McElfatrick and Matt Melvin. The comic has been running since 2005 and is published on the website explosm.net along with animated shorts in the same style. Matt Melvin left C&H in 2014, and several other people have contributed to the comic and to the animated shorts… Read more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyanide_%26_Happiness

Hope you enjoy and feel free to contribute to the community with art, media, cool stuff about the authors, tattoos, toys and anything else, as long it’s Cyanide and Happiness related!
