I know spam posts have been around for a while but not like this.

I'm in the Fediverse for the lack of advertising as much as anything else but this may as well be R****t.

Apologies for the rant, please lmk if I'm missing something obvious.

Thanks.

Report, downvote, and block

This helps us the most.

What is the best way to report it? Message a mod?

Edit: Found it on desktop, It's just not on the Mlmym interface.

[-] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

The app I use, voyager, has 3 lil dots on each post and comment that opens a menu which contains report, block etc options

[-] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 2 points 9 months ago

Ah ok, I found the option on normal desktop, but apparently it's not on the Mlmym interface which I use the most.

Can mods at /c/technology do anything? Thats where I'm seeing them the most

[-] ianovic69@feddit.uk 8 points 9 months ago

Let's all ask. If they can't they may know who can?

Btw, love your banner image. Looks like the Swiss Alps, did you take it?

[-] BorisBoreUs@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Absolutely not. :) Liberally borrowed from the abundance of the internet.

(the sound of many shocked intakes of breath)

Sir, this is a Wendy's!

No idea what a "cracked software spam post" would look or be like but I don't think I've ever seen one.

[-] Fisch@lemmy.ml 8 points 9 months ago

I've seen one today and one yesterday. It's basically a post saying "Here's this great software that does this and this. Download a cracked version here for free!"

[-] ianovic69@feddit.uk 8 points 9 months ago

Each post is about a cracked version of a usually popular piece of commercial software. There's been loads of them.

I often sort by new and saw a lot. If you’re sorting by active it might’ve been removed by the time you got to it.

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Ah ok. Yeah I usually sort by Top 6hr

[-] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.world 9 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

It’s likely malware inside that cracked software too, as it’s being promoted by the poster

[-] mPony@kbin.social 16 points 9 months ago

they seemed to be leaking in from one particular instance I was subbed to. I unsubbed from that instance before coffee this morning and now I can't even remember which one it was, so I'm seeing fewer of them, at least.

[-] Skelectus@suppo.fi 10 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

They are coming from many instances. None of them seem to have the security question enabled at signup.

[-] ianovic69@feddit.uk 3 points 9 months ago

Oh, how are you able to see that?

[-] Skelectus@suppo.fi 4 points 9 months ago

Simply going to the instance and looking at the signup page.

[-] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

On voyager it’s a setting to show the users instance. I always have that on. Helps to give context

[-] ominouslemon@lemm.ee 7 points 9 months ago

The instance is toast.ooo but there's spam also coming from lemmynsfw.com

[-] ianovic69@feddit.uk 4 points 9 months ago

Oh no, you can do it!

Remember, remember, remember, remember.....

No pressure 🗿

[-] db2@lemmy.world 13 points 9 months ago

To spread some kind of malware.

Yea, no clue, very annoying to deal with. I've been building tools to allow us to delete them faster. Some information on how it currently works: if a post get's reported more than 3 times in a short time, some people get notified and they can identify whether it's spam and then instantly delete it. We also have an automod made by Rooki which has a list of blacklisted URL's. If anyone has any ideas on how to improve this, feel free to share.

Thanks for replying, much appreciated.

[-] Engywuck@lemm.ee 8 points 9 months ago

I'm sick of them, as well. I keep reporting/blocking but these fuckers keep making accounts on different instances.

[-] CaptainBasculin@lemmy.ml 4 points 9 months ago

I agree. Reminds me of the days I moderated a discord server, where I coded a bot to end the spam waves. Lemmy API has the endpoints for moderation too, so maybe a similar approach could be used here?

[-] Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago

Been working on that (:
