Ok so I just watched Nope and I gotta talk about this. I could talk a lot about the symbolism and message about the entertainment industry which is fantastic too, but what I really want to talk about is the fact that this shit was legit the scariest movie I have ever seen. I'm not even joking.

Now let me be clear obama and say that I am not easily scared by horror movies. I find most horror movies either boring as hell or obnoxious. I'm not afraid of ghosts, demons, or slashers but for some reason

spoilerA FUCKING GIANT BED SHEET ALIEN SPOOKED ME

I mean for real the part where

spoilerit sucked a bunch of people up and they were all screaming and being digested legitimately made me physically ill

I still feel ill when I think about it. Too scary for me.

Get Out was good too, it didn't scare me as much but I also found the

spoilersunken place
pretty damn freaky.

It's like Jordan Peele knows exactly what makes my skin crawl. Wow.

I haven't seen Us but I assume that is good too, but if it's anyting like Nope I will need an emotional support cushion to watch it lmao

Edit: Can confirm the film makers knew exactly what they were doing with that scene (from an interview with Jordan Peele):

spoiler

"I created something that was claustrophobic and yet felt like you’re so massively out of any sense of control, and in that state with a group of people. Part of the true fear of this thing is being not just a victim, but one of many victims who are all screaming together is, I feel, a particularly helpless feeling. So I built, essentially, a tunnel, a tract, that we were ushering people through. And then there’s a larger sense of the interior of that space. It’s much more like a theater in itself. And there’s something of a bouncy-castle-from-hell energy going on with the way it conducts wind and all."

Nope didn’t do it for me but I liked Peele’s other movies. The scariest moment in Nope for me was the kids dressing up as aliens. Aliens have always terrified me. (Someone please psychoanalyze me here, I’m serious.) I found Fire In The Sky to be legitimately terrifying and disturbing.

For me, the funny thing about Us was how similar it was to Parasite.

Peele also signed the Israel letter demanding that Biden do even more genocide to free the hostages cringe. The white people got into his brain.

Noooooo god damn it why do all famous people suck

[-] duderium@hexbear.net 11 points 8 months ago

Boots Riley doesn’t suck. Roger Waters and Oliver Stone are also okay. Is there anyone else? Celebrities are basically just theater kids who actually made it, which means there is no reason at all for them to question their deplorable politics.

Dolly Parton, her only politics seem to be giving tons of money to charity.

[-] duderium@hexbear.net 9 points 8 months ago

Just don’t ask where all that money comes from (her theme park which pays minimum wage in Tennessee). I don’t recall Dolly Parton sticking her neck out for Palestine, either.

Fair enough and she's a millionaire so wall anyway.

Damn; not the guy who codified the Sunken Place getting subjected to it...

[-] WIIHAPPYFEW@hexbear.net 5 points 8 months ago

Oddly enough he also signed onto the Artists For Ceasefire list so shrug-outta-hecks both-sides

Does the "child" from Eraserhead spook you? It did to me when I was a kid

[-] duderium@hexbear.net 1 points 8 months ago

Never seen it but now I know not to.

tbf i don’t think slashers and the like are actually meant to be scary as much as they are suspenseful. it’s like a rollercoaster where you’re waiting for the drop. that’s why everyone says jump scares are cheap and not scary scary.

or my point is it needs to touch you emotionally for it to be scary

[-] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 3 points 8 months ago

Maybe slasher wasn't the best choice, but you get what I mean

Get Out wasn't too bad scare wise, I liked how it captures the whole essence of how libs treat minorities, that cringe façade of acceptance but they're ready to stick the knife in us or abuse us at their purpose as it suits them. That whole being a powerless onlooker in one's body while you feel driven by the will others is just continuing on with the above, sunken place is a great representation of this daily occurrence, even better when one thinks of it as this inversion of the whole concept of where one goes when they dissociate for safety but trapped there.

Can confirm that white people and

spoilerfloating irises that turn into cameras
both make for terrifying movie monsters

As far as the

spoilerEating and digesting people while they scream

I saw that movie a second time with different people and I had to leave the theater during that scene because it made me feel so sick the first time. Even though I know its

spoilera camera and a couple people in like, a half inflated bounce house with screaming played overtop
