I'm kind of okay with this. It was a reasonable take -- not a hot take or an incendiary comment or something. Mods using their power to shut down discussion -- expected on that instance I guess ;)

This is my first time getting any sort of ban on any lemmy instance. Now I just need to get banned on a right-wing server for some other centrist take, to keep balance in the universe ;)

How many of you have experienced this on lemmy.ml?

It would be nice if other large instances like .world had the cojones to defederate .ml because they're getting tankier by the day. They're almost as bad as lemmygrad. Just because it's a large instance run by the Lemmy devs doesn't mean they should get special treatment. If they're going to allow (read: encourage) crap like this, they should be cut off to prevent it from spreading.

There is a realistic scenario where Mali starts reclaiming domains who are using their TLD to mean Marxist-Leninist.

[-] CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social 18 points 6 months ago

Is that why they use .ml? I had read somewhere that it was just an especially cheap domain to use or something?

[-] troyunrau@lemmy.ca 25 points 6 months ago

Mali had a ten year period where they were allowing free registration. That doesn't exist anymore.

They also keep getting classified documents due to typos in army.mil email addresses and similar ;)

[-] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 17 points 6 months ago

"They also keep getting classified documents due to typos in army.mil email addresses and similar ;)"

Government of Mali: "We should be taking advantage of this more than we are..."

I'm pretty sure they're paying for theirs though. The free ones were taken away recently.

Lemmygrad and .ml are run by the same people. The latter is the "public" face I suppose

[-] Random_internet_user@lemmy.today 9 points 6 months ago

Nah the devs have officially made a statement they have no relation with .grad

[-] moosetwin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 6 months ago

no officer, I didn't shoot that guy! I am just holding a gun and they have a bullet hole in their head

I had no idea but in retrospect I should have known.

Defederation shouldn't be the first solution to problems with other instances. If they want to be overzealous and heavy handed with moderation on their site then they will lose users who want more fair and effective moderation. But if you defedate with them, then their users just get stuck on these echo chamber communities.

Defederation should be a last resort to deal with poor moderation of abusive content, not moderation that we don't agree with.

[-] MamboGator@lemmy.world 18 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

When an instance's admins actively support hostile regimes and condone mods censoring posts about human rights abuses and genocide while spreading propaganda, it's not a simple disagreement.

.ml has no problem with people defending Russia's invasion and genocide in Ukraine, or denying China's genocide of Uighur Muslims. But they'll delete posts calling out Turkey and Hungary for acting in bad faith as NATO and EU members.

They're not just allowing but encouraging disinformation to propagate across the fediverse in order to win more support for their dictator daddies. Instance admins have the same responsibility to prevent dangerous disinformation campaigns from spreading as any other social network. They can either opt to do so on their own, or they can wait for regulations to force them to like Facebook and Xhitter.

[-] TORFdot0@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

I agree with your assessment on their political views. I also don't mod any communities on Lemmy or run my own instance so I don't have to worry about trying to deal with moderating the harmful political views of admin and mods with their other users' contributions to the network. I am just stating my opinion of not throwing the baby out with the bath water by going with the nuclear option that is defederation.

[-] pixeltree@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 6 months ago

I believe you accidentally said should instead of shouldn't in the first sentence

[-] TORFdot0@lemmy.world 10 points 6 months ago

Thanks for the correction, really changes my whole point. I'm glad you caught it

Listen some of us made accounts on .ml when we had no idea what we were doing making a lemmy account, mkay

[-] SlicingBot@lemmy.ml 8 points 6 months ago

Seconded. I joined .ml because they were the first to have a formula 1 community.

I prefer to follow the news on other instances like beehaw and .world to avoid your experience.

There are normal/non-radical communities that exist that would be lost via defederation.

Western chauvinism is when you criticize right-wing strongmen, and the more you criticize the right-wing, the more chauvinist it is.

[-] troyunrau@lemmy.ca 26 points 6 months ago

I'm not saying it makes sense...

[-] amio@kbin.social 11 points 6 months ago

Well, then you'll get bann- oh.

[-] bigboig@lemmy.dbzer0.com 34 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

I learned recently firsthand .ml does not take kindly to the word tankie lol

[-] Badeendje@lemmy.world 6 points 6 months ago

Nope, they ban you for it.

[-] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

~~They didn’t ban me just deleted my respective comments.~~ Edit: i was banned from worldnews@lemmy.ml for opinion that the Chinese gov controlled media was propaganda.

Good point. Turkey has been a bad-faith member of NATO for years now.

[-] ns1@feddit.uk 7 points 6 months ago

Yes, I remember seeing this comment. The bias there is really obvious to anyone following the discussion.

[-] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 28 points 6 months ago

I don't see anything wrong with what you wrote. And what the hell is "western chauvinism" really? Eastern Europe and Western Europe are simply not THAT different culturally.

The only thing I would actually add to your comment (which would obviously get me banned) would be to say that vetoes should not be a thing in NATO...for ANY country.

[-] gregorum@lemm.ee 28 points 6 months ago

I once got banned for “BlueAnon nonsense”, and I still have no clue what that means.

[-] can@sh.itjust.works 33 points 6 months ago

I got curious and looked it up.

"Blue Anon" is a term coined by conservatives attacking those who push "left-wing conspiracy theories."

The phrase is a play on the name of the radical conspiracy theory QAnon

So nonsense lmao

[-] gregorum@lemm.ee 29 points 6 months ago

Oh, boy… when the mods over there are calling me the same names that Marjorie Taylor Green uses, I know I’m on the right side, lol

[-] Ilikecheese@lemm.ee 7 points 6 months ago

The good news is neither do they.

It must be getting worse on .ml world news. Either that or they have some new power tripping mods. This is like the 5th post I've seen in 24hrs about being ban from there.

[-] bigboig@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 6 months ago

It is an election year ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Tankies gonna tankie

[-] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 19 points 6 months ago

I've had cases where I got Hexbear dogpiled, so my comment got deleted. However, the mods still kept the dogpiling comments and I was still getting responses because obviously hexbear was brigading.

[-] troyunrau@lemmy.ca 13 points 6 months ago

Yeah, that's how I found out I was banned. Tried to reply to a reply.

[-] YeetPics@mander.xyz 17 points 6 months ago

Don't show a tankie reason and logic, they meltdown and get very hostile. Weak sorts of folks.

Congrats. I don't have any experience because I have been avoiding and blocking lemmy.ml.

[-] Badeendje@lemmy.world 17 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Hoorah, welcome to the club! It is a badge of honor really. I use a separate account to have some discussions on .ml but in the mean time I added lemmy.ml to my instance blocklist and Lemmy has been wonderfull since.

A big issue seems to be that users looking for worldnews get their world news instead of world at lemmy.world..

And yes I sometimes have discussions on .ml as I think some of the extrimist idolization needs to be called out. So that if normal people see such comments they can also read a dissenting viewpoint.

And every now and then, just to tell a tankie that the Uyghur camps are real... Getting banned and doing it again.

[-] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 13 points 6 months ago
[-] ChowJeeBai@lemmy.world 13 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Sorry to hear that mate. Same here, made a post about it too. I think it's a few users with an agenda, combined with an automod that carries out the actual ban, and mods who don't review. Discuss. Block (optional). Move on.

Also: as the thread gets active, tankie users may try to hijack your post with comments blaming you for your ban, calling you names/ libtard/ govt bootlicker etc. Ignore these idiots. They come out hot and expect your reaction. Don't drop to their level. Be better.

[-] shani66@ani.social 8 points 6 months ago

I don't even know if my instance is federated with them, all the better if not imo.

Looks like someone might have been a bit trigger happy. 😅 Perhaps "dealing with them" got them into a twist. Given how we've "dealt with" some leaders we didn't like in that past.

[-] Klear@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Isn't lemmy.ml full of guillotine memes?
