In a freak accident today, a photographer was killed when a huge lump of cheddar landed on him. To be fair, the people who were being photographed did try to warn him. (lemmy.ca)

People don't literally say cheese. They just smile. The photographer tells them to say cheese, and the people smile.

I know, but nobody actually says cheese except probably 10-year-olds at summer camp. If you want a good photo taken, are you really going to say the word cheese? No you're not.

Tbf, where and when I grew up (USA, 1980s-1990s), it seems like at least 90% of people taking pictures said "ok everybody say cheese!", including school photographers/sears photographers etc. I think it was so common because they were limited takes of tangible negatives, so "say cheese!" improved the chances of getting a smiling picture
