I hate those little bastards

After encountering blackfly in Strasbourg last year and having legs covered in blistered bites I don't have as much hatred for the tiger mosquito, at least the reaction to those bites is minimal

[-] SirSamuel@lemmy.world 6 points 6 months ago

Oh yeah, there's definitely worse

Still hate them

A tiger mosquito?

Science has gone too far.

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 30 points 6 months ago

is this because of climate change?

[-] SlopppyEngineer@lemmy.world 72 points 6 months ago

Yes. Cold winters kill these mosquitos, and winters are not that cold anymore.

Happily living in northern Sweden until I have to migrate further north to avoid these fuckers. Regular mosquitos are bad enough here as it is during the summer.

Are... are tiger mosquitos worse than regular ones?

Tiger mosquitos bite during the day as well. They are also quite good at hiding and finding a trace of shade where they will hide until you stop looking for it. Bites sometimes proper hurt too.

These ones can carry malaria and dengue. Climate change means tropical diseases move north too, and these mosquitos are their highway.

[-] banghida@lemm.ee 2 points 6 months ago

Yeah, we have them for a decade here in Dalmatia.

Tiger mosquitoes have been in the US since they hitched a ride in a tire from China in the 80's, before algore invented the internet or global warming. The cold weather didn't stop them from invading Michigan, new york, Pennsylvania, Vermont, new Hampshire....

Was this according to someone's grandpappie?

The Asian tiger mosquito entered the United States in shipments of used tires from northern Asia in the mid-1980s.

Lmao love how people downvote the guy with knowledge because they think they're arbiter of all migrations of invasive species or something lmao

We are having an explosion of dengue cases in Latin America propagated by that mosquito, it is not a nice disease and immunity doesn't really work, depending on your luck. Good luck everyone!

Is it still being implemented? This awesome article is from 2022.

I just tried to look for newer hits, but I keep getting articles from 2022 (though several from Nature)

I wish that anti-mosquito laser was on the market

Looks like I'm eating crow, thanks for the article. Looks like I have to call my vet and pediatrician since it's been getting warmer around here.
