Are there other types of fruits that could go well with tomatoes in a salad?

Cucumbers are melons. But that has me questioning if melons are fruit and I don't want to google it, I just want to be angry.

Ackchually, cucumbers are berries. Cucumber and melons belong to the same family, they are kind of siblings.

When they say a girl has nice melons, they don't mean her boobs are shaped like cucumber, that's for damn sure.

It means that both women and men can have nice melon(s)

On a related note: Cucumbers in fruit salad are great for moderating sweetness (or the bitterness of grapefruits). Other veg I like to put in fruit salad include lightly sweet veg like carrot and sweet potato.

I've had "vegetable" salads with apples, pears, grapes, nectarines (not all together lol), a bit of sweet-tartness works really well, especially with a vinaigrette type dressing.

Pineapple and apple go well in pasta salads. Again not at the same time but the added sweetness and texture helps enhance the salad.

Pears also work really well with gorgonzola!

Tomatoes are a vegetable (fite me bro). They're botanically a fruit, but they're high in acid and don't play well with sweet fruits - Avocado is a good other example that goes terribly with sweet fruits especially citrus.

That said - avocado salad (aka guacamole) is amazing and tomato salad ditto - whether just tomatoes with salt or caprese.

It's not that tomatoes can't be used in fruit salad it's that they pair terribly with Honeydew, Grapefruit, Orange, Grapes, and Cantelope.

I like tomatoes in my guac. Those two go well together.

Wait, aren't all fruits vegetables tho? I honestly don't know, this whole thing is confusing.

I think we normies should have another word that fits better; "fruit" doesn't really mean anything in culinary terms, IMHO

Several years ago my wife grew over a dozen styles of heirloom tomatoes. There were several that I think would have worked in a fruit salad, particularly with watermelon and some basil.

Yeah, you can't just throw a grocery Roma into a fruit salad, but what you describe sounds f'n amazing.

[-] ghostrider2112@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago

Yeah, chilled, and with some aged balsamic. I also enjoyed them with the balsamic, fresh basil (and some mint), some olive oil, chopped green onions, and cucumbers for another good salad.

You need to shut up and invite me over for dinner.

haha…well, best to wait until the garden is producing!

Caprese is basically a fruit salad if you think about it.

[-] Iamsqueegee@sh.itjust.works 10 points 7 months ago

Ah, yes. Mozzarella. Fruit of the udder.

[-] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 1 points 7 months ago

I do enjoy the occasional dwarf milk cheese, personally.

Cucumbers, tomatoes, avocadoes, sweet peppers and olives are all culinary vegetables that are botanical fruits that can be made into salads.

Tomatoes come in two varieties:

  • Tomatoes you can slice without making a goopy mess. These tomatoes have no flavor, but have the benefit of having a physical shape
  • Tomatoes that turn into a goopy mess when you cut them. These tomatoes have flavor, but are only suitable for sauces
