2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, and was inspired by Clarke's 1951 short story "The Sentinel" and other short stories by Clarke. Clarke also published a novelisation of the film, in part written concurrently with the screenplay, after the film's release. The film stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, and Douglas Rain and follows a voyage by astronauts, scientists, and the sentient supercomputer HAL to Jupiter to investigate an alien monolith.

The film is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of space flight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous imagery. Kubrick avoided conventional cinematic and narrative techniques; dialogue is used sparingly, and there are long sequences accompanied only by music. The soundtrack incorporates numerous works of classical music, including pieces by composers such as Richard Strauss, Johann Strauss II, Aram Khachaturian, and GyΓΆrgy Ligeti.

The film received diverse critical responses, ranging from those who saw it as darkly apocalyptic to those who saw it as an optimistic reappraisal of the hopes of humanity. Critics noted its exploration of themes such as human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning Kubrick the award for his direction of the visual effects. The film is now widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made.

Watching the ds9 episode where thst dude tries to ignite a star and Dax says OBrien is tuning up the runabout to reach higher warp thresholds cause if it goes supernova they've gotta get out of there fast. Shouldn't anything higher than warp one be perfectly adequate?

Unjust Depths with no context: cuttlefish edition!

Shalikova raised her hands and smiled awkwardly. "Jeez, I put my foot in it didn't I?"

SAME SHALIKOVA, same... I love her she's so good.

Maryam squirmed as Theresa rustled her hair and messed with the fins atop her head.

"Wah! Stop it! I'm not a little kid, I wouldn't have died." Maryam protested.

"Hah! I know, you're a big tough mercenary aren't you?" Theresa teased.

"Do you treat all employees like this? She gets headpats too?" Ulyana pointed at Xenia.

No Unjust Depths spoilers just gay mushy garbage ❀

Ulyana sighed a little inside, but she should have expected this anyway.

It wasn't like she had put a ring on her finger or anything.

She had not even confessed just how deep her feelings for this furry- eared, bright-eyed, thin-tailed Shimii had become. How much any word of support from her meant to Ulyana. Aaliyah, more than she knew, turned immediately into Ulyana's guiding light whenever she spoke. With this woman at her side, the Captain felt like she could go anywhere and conquer any obstacle.

This was not something that Ulyana could say out loud.

Chin up, Captain Ulyana!! Let the far-flung goal of Aaliyah ear-scritches be your motivating force!! You can save this fumble!!! Uncritical support!!!!

Tbh the idea that Ulyana has like no experience actually being in a deep relationship is just, kel-bliss let your "irrational girlish longing" flow, captain. Ugh I adore her, she can do it.

Unjust Depths, spoiler free I'm p sure, world stuff

Question for anyone in Unjust Depths gang: Why does nobody (at least in the Union and Empire) know what psionics are when they're so common? Not only can tons of people see auras by default, but you have Norn who was the Emperor's right hand and uses psionics all the time in really obvious ways, like threatening people and shit. You also have Katarrans doing genetic shenanigans specifically for really strong psionics, so why does Maryan talk to Shalikova like nobody knows what psionics are? Weirdass...

I went to a drag show semi-recently and there was a comedy routine and the performer was dropping f-slur a lot. Is that normal? Im not a gay so I don't know the culture.

The whole thing felt reactionary despite the audience being overwhelmingly gay, although I noticed predominantly white.

Some queer people feel comfortable reclaiming the f slur / t slur(s), though it's not universal. I'd expect that from a comedy set at a drag show tbh
