I don't see the value in using an extension just to automatically watch YouTube in HD. Maybe 10 years ago, but now we got Newpipe.

Also Google Search has gone downhill for quite some time now. Why should I install an extension that reverts the enshittification Google has deliberately created?

DDG, Qwant, searXNG maybe even Brave or Kagi are better options. If you like Google Search so much, at least use Startpage.

I’ve tried searXNG but I’ve never been able to get great search results. Maybe I need to spend some more time setting it up or something??

I’ve used DDG and Kagi previously and don’t have any complaints. Startpage has also been pretty decent for myself.

It is a metasearch engine, so you can tweak the sources of the results, default language, etc. I personally use all the default plus some more engines and all languages, then reduce results if I can't find useful information. It has made searches easier for me, since you can find all types of information with just one click (Search | Images | Files | Academic | etc.) and multiple languages, but it can be not so welcoming to people that want simple searches.

Unfortunately, there are some big issues with Kagi and Brave (https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/brave)

No, it's an android app.

I don't like to install an app for every service or product, but newpipe adds so much value, that it's a no-brainer for me.

I actually use both Grayjay (for subscriptions across platforms) and NewPipe (one-off videos). They're both great.

[-] cyrus@sopuli.xyz 3 points 10 months ago

newpipe is a custom, built-from-scratch android client for YouTube.

If you want something that works in your browser, check the piped and invidious projects

Brave Search is so good!

Add SponsorBlock and DeArrow in the list. You will not regret it.

[-] eager_eagle@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

I've been using Sponsorblock and DeArrow on LibreTube

[-] Lemmchen@feddit.de 1 points 10 months ago

Huh, didn't know about DeArrow. Sounds interesting.

[-] Josselin@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Ok for SponsorBlock but DeArrow… seriously?

[-] gaylord_fartmaster@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

I was skeptical about DeArrow but it is absolutely worth it. I don't use the thumbnail replacer but removing clickbait titles makes YouTube so much more usable.

[-] Josselin@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

In this case I agree because frankly removing the miniatures is really ugly but what saddens me with this extension is that he insists on paying.

[-] gaylord_fartmaster@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Then offer to host the database/servers on your own dime and make it free for everyone. It's a completely reasonable price with the option to try it for free before paying.

Firefox Relay is open source though, here's the source code: https://github.com/mozilla/fx-private-relay-add-on/

And for the server: https://github.com/mozilla/fx-private-relay/

Also:

While there may not be as many options as for Chromium-based browsers

Many Chromium-based browsers offer no extensions on Android at all?

[-] CluelessLemmyng@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 10 months ago

Multi-Account Containers and Sidebar Tabs for me. Gotta keep those (work) sessions secure and easy to find.

[-] Lemmchen@feddit.de 11 points 10 months ago

On Android?

[-] deadcatbounce@reddthat.com 3 points 10 months ago

Much rather have addy.io than Firefox Relay. I used the beta here in the UK and moved on.

Don't know what oldlander is; directs to old.reddit?

[-] deadcatbounce@reddthat.com 3 points 10 months ago

Answered my own question: Yes. I've put the various anti Reddit spam in ublock so not really necessary.

Pretty much any email masking tool that gives you more than 5 domains for free, especially considering several do this for free (Addy, DDG, Ironvest).

It seems like YouTube High Definition has stopped working for me lately. Can't seem to be able to open a settings page either.
