Highly recommend checking out wefwef - closest option to an Apollo clone as I've seen so far in terms of UI and functionality, and doesn't even need to be installed. Memmy is a very good second place option, but I've been using wefwef since I heard about it yesterday and ZI think it's better.

[-] iso@lemmy.com.tr 0 points 1 year ago

It's good but laggy. Swiping doesn't feels native unfortunately.

[-] cowleggies@reddthat.com 1 points 1 year ago

Are you using it as an installed PWA? I’m not having any issues with animations or scrolling. I have run into a few weird UI bugs with slide up menus within communities, but that’s about it.

As the Memmy dev I can also highly recommend wefwef. Great product for such a short lifespan.

Thanks for all you’re doing!

Quick question: I noticed the API calls aren't (weren't?) compressed, is that on purpose?

[-] gkd@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 year ago

Going outbound or inbound? Outbound the requests are super basic, inbound they are pretty large. There’s a lot of limitations on that.

For example to get basic user info you have to receive a bunch of other information that you’re not going to bother using. Hopefully in time this will get changed, because there’s no reason to be receiving so much data whenever you really only need a few bytes.

[-] fiah@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

the json coming back from requests like showing a thread was not compressed when I checked yesterday (firefox on ubuntu): https://discuss.tchncs.de/pictrs/image/1a99e758-deaa-46f6-8eff-3aa2158858ad.png

but I just checked again and now it's correctly responding with compression (chrome on windows)

[-] gkd@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 year ago

Ohh you’re referring to wefwef. I’m not the wefwef dev, I’m the memmy dev. Thought you were talking about API calls memmy makes.

[-] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

The fact that you’re not just actively engaging here, but advocating another route, makes me want memmy on apple.

[-] MrCaturdayNight@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Memmy is on apple. Want no longer.

[-] gkd@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

The key to making Lemmy work in my opinion is being a real community. That means having everyone help out in any way they can and working together. Memmy alone can never fill all the gaps, nor can anything else. A wide selection of options is key to getting more people on board.

Already we are seeing varying designs and implementations, and that is great since users definitely don’t want to be locked in to a single option. Glad to see it.

the apollo - memmy pipeline is real

[-] rev@ihax0r.com 2 points 1 year ago

Its not as polished as Apollo but years of development will do that for you.

I noticed at one point in the side swipe upvote the down vote and upvote waw pointing down just the color was changing

[-] JuxtaposedJaguar@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Apollo is more like the wife who was murdered by Reddit, now watching you from heaven, hoping that you find a new social media platform to make you happy.

[-] Lime66@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

What app is that on the left

[-] python@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Yeah, it's not too bad here. Got a dope username and gonna go on a spree searching up some cool new communities. There will always be enough people relaying all the reddit content, so why bother ig

[-] Goatmom@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I was so happy when I found my normal username was available here on Lemmy. It's a shallow reason to like the app, but it's part of what really sold it to me and made me check it out further, and so far, I'm really happy I did.

[-] CodaChroma@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

I’ve got like 4 downloaded right now

[-] zav@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago
[-] Mac@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I have 6 downloaded so I can try them all. Lmao

Jerboa
Connect
Liftoff
Lemmur
Thunder
Wefwef

Edit: Connect was my favorite until i realized its absolutely riddled with trackers. RIP. Currently trying Wefwef but ill probably come back to Jerboa.

[-] dingus@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Which Reddit client are you coming from? Which Lemmy app are you enjoying the most right now? I'm an Android user coming from RIF. So far I have the most experience with Wefwef and Jerboa, and Wefwef is winning by leaps and bounds. I haven't tried too much of the rest, but I'm curious of your opinion on them if you've tried them all!

[-] Mac@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'm from RIF. I'm on Jerboa and i still haven't tried the other ones because I've been doing other stuff. Lol

Connect was my favorite until i realized its absolutely riddled with trackers. RIP. Currently trying Wefwef but ill probably come back to Jerboa.

Excited to try Boost when it releases.

[-] dingus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I saw some post about the trackers but I didn't really understand what that meant. Can you explain?

[-] Mac@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Here you can see all the requests it is making.
https://i.ibb.co/grLNjy9/Screenshot-20230708-103114-Tracker-Control.jpg

It might be the worst app i have installed in this regard.

Im using the Tracker Control app to see (and block) trackers, ads, etc.

EDIT: Some say this is due to visiting links within the app and using the in-app browser. I will open links on the external browser and find out.

Edit2: I disabled the in-app browser and reset the Tracker Control findings but am still finding lots of trackers according to Tracker Control.

[-] dingus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I guess I just don't understand what the image means or its significance. But yeah would be interested to know the results of your edit.

[-] Mac@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Ah, so some websites and apps will employ methods of data collection to learn things about you and then either use that information to feed you ads or sell it to other companies (or both). A lot of us prefer to keep what we can private and not be tracked so thoroughly.
Companies will build profiles on you that learn your likes, dislikes, political leanings, relationship status, gender, race, health issues, etc etc.

Even if some people are fine with being tracked another issue is that many companies have poor security and your data can be stolen in breaches by bad actors or sold to bad actors.

[-] fuckstick@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

I wonder if Christian can reuse Apollo as a Lemmy client and keep the project going

[-] june@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Wefwef is a web app that is a near carbon copy of Apollo. It’s how I’m browsing and it’s great. Much better than the web interface.

[-] DriftingDeep@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

He addressed that a bit ago. That kind of undertaking would be pretty big, since the data structure on the back end is so much different. It’s not out of the question, but not something he wants to do right now.

[-] fuckstick@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, he definitely deserves some time off after this. But if he were to get around to it at some point he’d have a ton of users

[-] IUsedTo@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Which clients do you guys actually recommand?

[-] repungnant_canary@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

I've just installed Connect and so far I like it more than Jeroba. There's also Sync coming SoonTM so that would probably be good

[-] phillycodehound@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Liftoff is pretty slick too. Though it has a padding issue on some drop downs.

['Distracted Boyfriend' - A stock photo image of a man walking side by side with a woman in a blue shirt, holding hands, as a different woman in a red shirt walks past. The man appears to be whistling at the woman walking past, showing clear interest in her looks, while the woman he is walking with looks at him. The face of the woman next to him is replaced by the app icon for the app "Apollo for Reddit", while the woman he is looking at has her face replaced by the app icon for "Memmy for Lemmy"]
