Filen cloud (lemmy.world)
submitted 4 months ago by root@lemmy.world to c/privacy@lemmy.ml

What are your thoughts on filen? I don't seem to be able to find a community for them here, but it seems like a pretty solid up and coming company for secure cloud storage options.

They've been around a bit now. Everyone seems to be pretty satisfied. Desktop app could use some improvements, which is already on their roadmap

I've never seen anyone say they're dissatisfied. I've seen claims that lifetime plans are a bad business model and I've seen one of the owners say they are careful to limit them. Their apps suck but I use them as an off site archive for my most precious data and while I wouldn't let them be my only backup they have yet to cause me issues in several years.

I actually emailed their support asking about the lifetime licensing, and they did mention they calculate/ limit the lifetime licenses to be sustainable. I hope they are able to succeed and be around for a while with their price modeling. Maybe lifetime won't be for sale for much longer

I like them. You get 40GB for free, so that’s appreciative. Opening documents can take some time, especially on mobile, but I don’t have any major complaints generally.

It's good and I like the service but the mobile app could use improvements to auto upload

I've noticed this too. I have to open the app for sync to start happening. I raised this concern to their customer support and they quickly responded saying they'll pass it to the dev team. Fingers crossed they add a fix soon.

People complain that they won't respect their lifetime plans forever, but otherwise I haven't heard anything bad about them.

Oh interesting, was there a Q&A or something or just speculation?

Nah, that was public opinion on /r/datahoarders (I think) back when I still used reddit.

Satisified customer here. Bought 2x lifetime plans for myself and my partner

Just bought 3 since they stack and I'm worried they won't be offered in the future XD

Film is a nice, up and coming company. I tried their services, all works. Client-side encryption is definitely a great feature. The downside for me was how the iOS app literally kills the battery.

Anyone know if Filen has an egress cost or limit?

You should use it. Strong E2EE and fully open source(unlike mega). Also bult-in notes and chats. 👍
