why the fuck do I live here. honestly this is a stupid petty thing to consider as a tipping point but this country is heading in a very stupid direction. At least I could be like "well obviously this place sucks but China is doing cool stuff" but now they're trying to cleave the world in two and trap me on the boring fascist side of it.

Edgy 12 year olds when they learn that the Nazis aren’t a bunch of funny, misunderstood teenagers and 20-something’s on 4chan and are lined up to be executed because they watched porn once boowomp

Idk about you but I'm stuck here. There's no real way I can get out of this fucking place. I have no education nor vast sums of cash to buy my way out. My best case scenario is finding a foreigner to marry and gtfo that way but I'm pretty sure my partner wouldn't be too happy about that

Is this just banning a particular brand of drones because they're a Chinese company?

[-] git@hexbear.net 44 points 2 years ago

One of these sections, H.R. 2864, or the Countering CCP Drones Act, was added to the bill and can be found under Section 1722. For those who are just hearing about this for the first time, it would remove DJI’s ability to get approval from the FCC, banning any future drones from being imported and possibly grounding current drones.

Yes.

Isn’t this another instance of “You’re not allowed to make laws specifically targeting one company” like why TikTok is probably gonna win their court case? Or are they relying on the Supreme Court deciding that’s fine with the TikTok one?

[-] RuthlessCriticism@hexbear.net 31 points 2 years ago

Tiktok is not going to win the court case. Laws exist to serve capital.

[-] ClimateChangeAnxiety@hexbear.net 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Yes exactly. Laws exist to serve capital, they’re not going to make an anti-business decision like that. That’s why the constitution says you can’t write a law targeting one company. Because laws exist to serve capital. I will genuinely be shocked if TikTok loses their case

[-] itappearsthat@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago

The capital they're serving here is domestic tech moguls who are drooling to buy TikTok at forced-sale prices

the Countering CCP Drones Act

Damn why does the US hate me so much?

Seriously tho, wtf is that name lol.

CCCP Drones Act

cyber-lenin

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 8 points 2 years ago

I'm guessing they have some kind of provision blocking Chinese owned companies in general, but it'd be funny as fuck if they just reincorporated as a new, near identical company and kept on.

[-] GaveUp@hexbear.net 34 points 2 years ago

Lol I'm pretty sure the US police and military are filled with DJI drones cause it's the best consumer grade you can buy

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 15 points 2 years ago

Yeah, this is gonna impact so many industries. If I thought lawmakers were smart, i would suspect there's another drone company in the wings waiting to swoop in for the profits, but they've convinced me otherwise.

[-] iridaniotter@hexbear.net 33 points 2 years ago

At this rate America's going to ban fucking flat screen TVs

[-] DamarcusArt@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 years ago

Would be hilarious if that led to a domino effect of people becoming politically active and overthrowing capital because they no longer have access to their circuses.

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 23 points 2 years ago

It's like my CPC handler always says, "Learn to hack, learn to drone."

[-] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 19 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

lol this definitely will impact the economy. in agriculture, DJI/XAG (both chinese) drones are increasingly used in spraying operations because they're cheaper and more efficient than sprayers, there are many businesses that make a living providing this drone spraying service and there is no competition to DJI/XAG, banning it will hurt these businesses and producers since they'll have to go back to less efficient sprayers. It's not huge but these add up.

[-] IzyaKatzmann@hexbear.net 7 points 2 years ago

Interesting, i figured the existing plane things or whatever for spraying could not be out-competed by drones. It's fascinating how far drone tech has come

[-] CDommunist@hexbear.net 11 points 2 years ago

Dick jerk insanity

[-] peeonyou@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago

so.. they're gonna give me my money back then right?

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 4 points 2 years ago

Yankees are just banning everything China aren't they? Can't compete, so they ban.

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
